ADSL Internet Speed survey

Hi All,

I thought to start this poll to share the internet speed experienced by Ozbargainers.
Currently I get 350-550 KBps(Kilobytes per second) download speed.
Post code 5063.
Provider TPG.
you can use
http://www.ozspeedtest.com/ (speed displayed in Bytes )
or
http://www.speedtest.net/ (speed displayed in Bits)
to check your speed.
Please use the polling options to select your speed.
Thanks

  • sometimes it's depends on ur modem,
    Billion - 1.3meg max - most 1.1megs
    Boblite - 0.8meg max - most 0.7megs

    • Is Bob running in ADSL1 mode?

      • nope, double checked it….. latest firmware and every possible tweaking suggested in whirlpool forum
Billion is wireless G, and bob lite is wireless N (so I thought I've been upgraded), surprisingly wireless N is not any better/ further in signal.

My friend tried on Dlink vs Netgear. Netgear got extra juice compare to Dlink too.

Was due for NBN this year, now no one knows :( Very disappointed that I live in the capital of one of the richest countries on the planet, and have hopeless internet speed. And mine isn't even that bad compared to others, sadly.

Anyone see the point in threads like this when most peoples posts (probably including mine) are missing a lot of vital information.

That and everyone seems to be running different speed tests.

    • Yes the thread is pointless. ADSL speed largley depends on your distance from the DSLAM/exchange.

It's frustratingly slow at times. Often times, it drops completely.

I pay $100 per month for 100 GB, but live 7km+ from the nearest exchange.

    Telstra is ridiculous.

    • +2

suggest you get Vividwireless. I had this problem in Morley 6062 when I was living there.
It is cheaper and you will likely get better internet speed on vividwireless.

      • +1

        thank you for your suggestion!

i will definitely look into it. do you remember roughly what speeds you were getting?

and will things like online gaming be more difficult due to increased ping on "wireless / 4G internet"?

It seems to particularly slow down during stormy weather and certain times of the night.

But we've been with telstra since 2002. And this is the fastest speed we've gotten.

$100/month for the speeds we're getting is really quite poor :(

Thank you marbss. Just out of interest, did TPG/ Optus/iinet work for you?

  • +6

If you are dissatisfied with your speeds or with frequent dropouts due to poorly maintained copper lines, don't worry. The Liberals will solve all of your problems :) Privatization and deregulation are the solution to all of life's ills (or so they tell me). Who needs a communistic national broadband when private enterprise can do a better job at a lower price?

Soon we won't have a need for fast broadband anyway, since the Liberals will be Firewalling Australia off from the evils of the Internet. All you shall be able to download with your broadband connection is capitalistist propaganda.

    • if the government sells everything, why we need to elect so many ministers to represent us to manage the public welfare?

we elect them to help us manage common needs…… if there isn't any for them to manage why we still need so many politicians? They throw the whip at private owner?…… woosha!

  • Speed is not the problem, we can even match the speed with high-tech countries like Japan.

The problem is price. It is VERY VERY expensive here.

    • Quota is also a killer.
On the top Tier iiNet NBN plan, 1000GB at 100Mbps, you could download your whole quota in under a day.

Maybe it's fortunate then that I get to download my 250GB at <3Mbps. It'd take me a full week to blow it going 24/7.

  • 3754 With Exetel. .. 2.4MB down on all torrents.. 75kbps up.

Saying that i have NBN in my street but its not active yet the street behind me is.

    • You have 2.4 megabytes per second down and only 75 kilobits per second up? That makes no sense. Is it ADSL?

      • Yeap those are the max speeds ive ever had.

        • Are you sure you don't mean 75 kiloBYTES per second up? If so, I'd be very interested to see your modem stats, including sync speed, attenuation and SNR margin.

My distance to exchange is quite a bit, always had problems with slow speeds and excessive buffering on youtube. Then I went to research more and whirlpool always talks up the Billion modems and how good they are in situations like mine. Then in purchased the latest bipac 8800 acl billion modem and boom , now I get 6mps vs the 3mbs prior with the old netgear. It really works once you play with snr settings.

  • Cable users:
How do you know if it's Telstra cable or Optus cable that is available to you?
These two seem to sell ADSL and Cable as the same service, hence I can't tell which cable is available at my place.

    • I think for telstra if it indicates on the check availability as broadband/ADSL available = you can get ADSL
If it indicates 'cable' is available then it's telstra cable.

  • There is a trick to the TPG package. For $59 there are 2 packs available. One is 500GB and another is unlimited.
Usually everyone thinks that Unlimited is better than 500GB as they are the same price. But there is a difference.
500Gb pack has a minimum assured bandwidth of 4 Mbps and the unlimited pack is 512 or 256 Kbps.
So choose your pack wisely. If you get less than the assured level then report it to TPG. My friend gets a discount now and then for reporting issues with his connection.

    • +1

Where did you get that info from? I've seen no "assured level" for either plan, and IME, unlimited gives the same speed as the 500 GB plan. The only difference I'm aware of is that unlimited isn't available in all areas.

  • Depends on how much you pay per month. I'm with Telstra and getting 100 Mbps all the time, but I'm paying them a whooping $120 per month for 500GB download

    • What plan is that? Their current 500 GB cable plan (Internet + home phone, with no included calls, which I've just ordered) is $113 per month, but that doesn't include the Speed Boost, which is $20 extra, so I won't get 100 Mbps

  • How are you all able to get such great speeds ? I am running a netgear nighthawk R7000 router and only getting 6.07mbps down and 0.29 up on Telstra ADSL 2+ my postcode is 4213

    • You're probably further from your exchange than those getting "great speeds". The length and quality of the phone line between you and the exchange are the main factors for any variety of ADSL. Checking the modem statistics, such as attenuation, SNR margin and sync speed would throw more light on the situation..

    • The Nighthawk will not do much for adsl Internet. Adsl2 caps out at around 24Mbps. 802.11ac maxes out at over 1000Mbps. The bottleneck is still the Internet. A new router may give you faster computer to computer file transfers or a stronger wifi signal. but if you aren't doing file sharing between computers then you should have maybe stuck with a 802.11ac router and saved a whack load of cash.
