Man, your junk is a pure rip off! $65 for a piece of underwear?

I went to Uniqlo the other day at the new Melbourne Emporium, i was expecting to find overpriced stuff too but their stuff is great! and well priced. check out these underlayers. $19.90

    They also have womens too.

It actually explains how it traps the heat, unlike this 'baselayers' shop.

      Apples and oranges maybe?

    • I'm not an expert on these things but from first glance, the Baselayer ones are made from wool whilst the Uniqlo ones are made from a bunch of random man-made materials. Also Baselayer ones are made in Australia, I assume the other one is made in China.

But like I said, I have no idea about thermal underwear, I'm here because I have an up coming trip to Sweden, but I'm not sure if I can afford these :(.

      • Hi Holy Popcorn
There is a promotional discount on at the moment. You can take 40% off the price listed against each product. A mens long sleeve pure wool top becomes $39. It will certainly do the job in Swedens cold weather.

        • Yea, I know :). But I'm heading there for 2 years and I'm trying to be as money efficient as possible especially considering I would need to buy a couple I assume. I'm more looking at the thermal pants (ummmm long johns?).

        • Just wanted to let you know that I went ahead and ordered 2 pairs. Hope they stop me from freezing in the Swedish winter. ;)

        • Thanks Holy. I'm sure they will keep you nice and warm!

      Hi Mongballs
I went to Uniqlo the other day and saw the product you are talking about. Uniqlo's product is a light weight synthetic and mainly acrylic. Our product is pure merino wool made in Australia. My concern when I saw the product and marketing explanation is that it encourages customers to overlook quality and the Australian wool industry in support of cheap imports. Its a sad story!

      • Do you use 100% Australian wool in your clothing? It just says "Made in Australia" (i.e. stitched here from wool produced and woven in who knows where).

        • +1

We only use Australian pure merino wool, 18.5 micron. The best in the world for clothing.

        • Edit

        • What is the weight of wool used for you merino wool tops in g/m squared?, just to compare with my smartwool top

      • however you should clarify uniqlo doesnt just do this advertising in australia. they arent dissing australian wool or anything.. they are just advertising the product thats available world wide.
and if people wanted to know.. i reckon uniqlo is quite overpriced here

Uniqlo's description is terrible. They don't even tell you what it's made out of.

All warm clothing, bedding etc uses trapped air as insulation; so their "Heat Retention" section tells you nothing about their clothing. All friction generates heat, so their nonsense about water molecules generating heat is nothing special, either. Moisture wicking is good; moisture absorption - as mentioned in their "Moisture Wicking" and "Anti-static" sections is bad, as that moisture fills in the spaces which are normally filled by air. Air is a good insulator, water is a terrible insulator - so clothing that absorbs water (or "wet clothing") is really bad in cold weather. That's why synthetic thermals are so popular - they're hydrophobic, and don't absorb water. It's why cotton clothing is so popular in hot weather, too - it absorbs water really well, and keeps you cooler.

I'm not saying Baselayers.com.au's stuff is any good (although ~$40 seems about right for a good-quality Merino top, and steep for a bottom-quality one) I'm just saying that Uniqlo description is useless.

It doesn't matter if its made from wool or man made fibres, and it doesn't matter if its Australian or made in another country. The fact is, you buy an underlayer to keep you warm. If you want to pay more for something that does less and will only last a handful of washes, then fine.

When was the last time you wore a tshirt or shirt made from wool? exactly. When was the last time you washed something made from wool and what happend to it?

Also the uniqlo stuff i got is made from acrylic, viscose, polyester, elastane, meaning its silky smooth, stretchy and everything else. I'll be buying some more next time i'm in the city.
This also gives you a description. http://www.uniqlo.com/au/store/men-heattech-crewneck-long-sl…

While I agree that to a certain extent the country of origin does not matter (despite popular belief, you get quality garments from China too!), the fact is, merino wool or any other wool is far superior in terms of retaining heat and wicking away moisture than acrylic. Merino wool is used here as it does not cause itchiness like some other wools. It also costs more to produce since it's a natural fiber. I have cotton (cotton > acrylic) long john's from bonds that aren't warm enough and feel heavy, almost like diapers. These are much lighter and will keep you warmer than either acrylic or cotton.
One could extend your comment further and ask, why buy acrylic long johns from Uniqlo when you can cut them out of a plastic bag for next to nothing?

The problem with synthetic fibres, especially thermals, is they tend to get really stinky as soon as you sweat. Wool is far better in this regard, I think due to it's antibacterial qualities.

      • Seriously Wool's anti- everything properties are damn near magical.

I inherited some woolen sweaters over Christmas, and have only washed them once each.

I honestly cannot believe they do not smell, having worn cotton and synthetics for so long, I'm used to one-wear/one-wash for most things.

        Merino wool is magical.

  • $25 for wool leggings and tops (slate colour) in specials section. Seems to be a better deal if they have your size.

  • I have other merino thermals and this seems like a great price for a quality product to me.

  • Order arrived today. Happy with purchase, thanks.
