As I missed the last deal, i recently keep checking the price for the 13 inch Sony Vaio Pro from B/H photo, and found actually this model was not mentioned in last deal (only difference against SVP13223CXB (usd920 from last deal) is only this is a 4gb ram version). Considering this 4gb version is advertised aud1499 on sony AU website, and most local stores like Harvey norman, JB hifi do not sell this model anymore, I assume this is still a good deal for people who missed last deal and can be happy with 4gb ram.

note:
1. Please note the ram is soldered on board hence not upgradable

Second model: SVP13223CXB

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1054567-REG/sony_svp13…

Product Highlights

8GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM (is the only difference from svp13222cxb)

Due to the price up for the 8gb Ram version SVP13223CXB from usd920 to usd950 now, the price now exceed the aud1000 limit to avoid the free importing tax. This morning, I managed to call B/H photo over the phone and was able to make a deal to avoid the importing tax, final price was usd999.99 (932.93+67.06)from web price usd1017. I was charged aud1067.28 on my credit card. The currency exchange rate is 0.937. so with this rate the laptop itself is aud995. I hope at the day of export, au dollars will be as strong as today… finger crossed.

Receipt attached if someone needs it.

note:
1. The price for same model but in silver has gone upto usd 1100, so not sure how long will the black sell at this low price (usd950)
2. To call B/H. dail 001118006066969 , make sure you have an account first so they got all your information in system and also your CC handy to make the payment over the phone.
3. the exchange rate used is the rate on the day of export, not day of arrival in Australia.

  • 'plus' for info provided.

  • You need to factor in 10% GST.

    • I thought that applied to the item value only. Not the shipping inclusive!

899 USD is ~970AUD. Therefore, no import tax. Please correct me if I am wrong.

      • From what I read from last deal and what I think, as long as the item itself does not exceed aud1000, you should be fine.

    • No, freight and insurance costs are not included in the customs value. See
      http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/ValueofImp…

Also, the exchange rate used is the rate on the day of export, not day of arrival in Australia.

      • [edit]
        Ignore me, I misunderstood!

      • Thanks for the info, will update.

  • this or Surface Pro 2?

    • I would say this.

More convenient form factor, nicer feel. The Surfaces have had considerable problems with their keyboards (the keyboards just not being recognised as being attached, or certain keys not working), so I'm wary of them. I also think the battery life might be better, but double check that.

    • Depends on what you want to achieve. This will not transform into a tablet. They are very light though.

  • +2

Just FYI to those considering this - I've been using the 4GB i5 version at work for the better part of the last year.

4GB RAM doesn't quite cut it when you have 15 tabs open in Chrome, Excel, Outlook etc.

I recently purchased the i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD version from Graysonline. $1259 + $30 delivery or so.

Yes, it was a 'refurb'. Mine had a small scratch on the underside of the laptop - you never see it. The screen, keyboard, lid - everything was perfect and came complete with all accessories and the box.

Mind you, it's been performing brilliantly, even with Visual Studio running, multiple Chrome Tabs, Excel, Outlook etc.

    For those interested: http://www.graysonline.com/retail/svp13219pgb-r/computers-an…

I was nervous but my experience has been awesome.

Also, for people who have a Velocity Frequent Flyer account, login to the eStore and purchase it through there - 2 points per $1 spent at Grays! (You should get 2500 points or so) - http://estore.velocityfrequentflyer.com/department-stores/gr…

    • +1 from me. I bought my Vaio Z2 from Gray as a "refurb" about 2 years ago. Pretty sure it was brand new, not a scratch on it. It's been humming away amazingly ever since, such a stunning piece of hardware. Way prettier than Apple's even. Also definitely agree with comments re 8gb, I can't imagine surviving with less.

      • How much was the Z2 if you don't mind me asking? I know they're a beast in terms of specs.

    • +1

4GB is fine for most people. I have this lappy for a year now, got it in last eofy sale. fantastic machine.

    • Heard the fan noise is loud in i7 model. How did you find yours? Can you claim TRS at the airport if bought from Graysonline?

    • $1259 from Graysonline link that u sent comes with only 4GB RAM. Not 8GB. Did you add another 4GB yourself?

  • B&H is quite strange. Their pricing changing within a few hours. Not seen that from a company beofre.

I took advatnage of the deal last weak for the 13" duo slider model at $929 and within a few hours it was another $40 higher and over the 1K limit.

Very impressed with the service from them. I asked to change my order from the 11.6" mode to the due and they did it within an hour of my email. Shipping arrive with 4 days even though I paid for the cheapest one.

    • So I assume no drama from the AU customs at all, right?

    • by the way, the Duo price now increased to usd 1299..

  • i bought the silver one from a recent deal post. received last friday. it is armed with 8gm ram. this black one only has 4gm rams?

    • they have both 4gb ram and 8gb ram versions in black

      • i paid less than $1000 for for the 8gb version.

just realised a horrible typo: 4gm and 8gm….

  • i have a black 13 duo 8gb 128gb 3 days old for sale if anyone interested, please pm me. melb pick up only.

    • Interested if you sell for $1000 and it comes with invoice for same price dated tomorrow (for obvious reasons)

      • Do u want to pm me to discuss further? Ru in Melbourne? Thanks

        • Am in Sydney but will be in Melb 15-17 July, so would be happy to pick up then if we can strike a deal today. Can do some sort of pay on delivery option through paypal?

        • Hi thanks for reply. I d rather to discuss in private. Can u please message me via ozbargain? U need to change ur setting though. Dun want to spam this thread. Thanks.

  • I ring B&H on Thu night, in regards to the 8gb SVP13223CXB which is currently $949, at 1st the sales wouldn't do the deal until I mention the figure shown on the invoice from op and then he confirmed with his supervisor. Exact same price $999.99 usd (including postage) but they wouldn't supply the bonus VGA adaptor which I don't care as I will connect via HDMI if required. I have also ring Sony AU and they confirmed it has local warranty. It is now arrived in sydney and eta delivery this week. Thanks so much op! If not because of your post I would end up buying a boring dell.

    • Good on you cheers! Mine currently is import scan at botany Sydney. Est delivery is Friday. :)

  • I would like to confirm if it was include any warranty ?

    Thanks

    • I think it includes 1 year international warranty

      • do you need to do anything to get the international warranty? register to any website or what?

    • Yes, it does. Warranty needs to be registered via
      https://dbiz.sel.sony.com/secure/irsp/gotoHomePage.do

    • Alternatively what I have done for mine is to ring Sony Aus (1300 13 7669), they will request you to send thru your invoice and they can put you into their system.
I got mine register in that way.

  • Just received the laptop even though on UPS tracking page it still shows "est delivery on late Friday"…..

    Beautiful finish, love it.

  • Mine was supposed to be delivered tomorrow (Wed) however it arrive AU early, so estimate was changed into Tuesday but after whole day waiting nothing happened. Hopefully it will show up tomorrow.

    • Mine arrived yesterday no issue.
Now I have to decide to learn Windows 8.1 or downgrade this into Win 7.
Very nice finish and I am happy I bought this instead of a Dell.

  • Take great care in buying this laptop. I just purchased the Sony SVP13216PGB model from Harvey Norman on Monday knowing about the Wifi issue that everyone is having with the SOny Vaios. I can confirm that when i moved the laptop to the living room, the wifi lost connection.

I believe the models that B&H are selling are 802.11a/b/g/n/ac whereas mine is only 802.11a/b/g/n.

Please see the link to the number of people with wifi issues with this model.

    http://community.sony.com/t5/VAIO-Hardware-Networking/New-So…

Hopefully the Model that B&H are selling will not have this issue but definitely keep it in mind. To the guys that have already bought this model, can you confirm that from about 5-10m away, do you still get a strong wifi signal ?

From 2m away, the wifi strength is very strong but as u get away it really becomes useless. Even my nexus 5 has more signal than the laptop.

    • Hi,
Yes the unit from B/H Video is with ac wireless client.
I have no issue with 5-10m away and I even keep on doing video chat all the way into my garage for testing, as it was my wireless blind spot previously on my old acer ultrabook s3 with only a wireless n 2.4ghz client.
However I also have a Netgear nighthawk ac1900 which is quite a strong router.
Lots of people complains about their new vaio with wireless issue for their existing network setup however in my view beside fixing the wireless issue on the latop itself (i.e. upgrade software) maybe another alternative is to look into upgrading the wireless router / modem as they are in fact the sender.
      Hope that help!

      • hey Mttk1853. I will definitely get one from BH but what do you think about getting the price below 1k? Is it do-able ??

I've also had some issues with the mouse trackpad. It skips around sometimes. Does yours do the same?

Other than the two issues i mentioned the laptop is awesome !!!!

        • The best price you can do with them for black color is what me and op got. Well no harm trying buddy.
And meanwhile their silver color unit is even $899USD, another $30+ USD cheaper:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/151434
As in regards to the touchpad, I am still trying to work with it as I am too use to my old ultrabook touchpad and this vaio one will take time for me. So far no issue except I am not use to it.

        • @mttk1853: Considering the price of the laptop is now 999.99 and the exchange rate has increased to 0.94, can i still get the laptop for under $1k AUD without paying this importing tax ? If I was to pay the import tax, how much would it be ?

        • @Andde: I believe I may have gotten the models confused. How come the 223CXB with 8gb ram is cheaper ($949.95) than the 222CXB with 4gb ram ($999.99)??

        • Don't worry about 222CXB, as if you check the op's invoice link he purchased 223CXB and that is also what I got.
Their listing price is ~$950 USD but if you buy it at such price it will exceed $1000 AUD then you will have to pay GST.
So if black is the color u after, do exactly what op described and they will give you the price like $923.xx USD which will end up ~$990AUD.
GST only against unit price so as long as the laptop itself is below $1000 you are fine.
That is also the reason why I didn't buy an i7 model instead.
And if you don't care about color you can get silver which is even cheaper. (refer to the link I provided above.)
222CXB is the older model which only have 4gb, same as those locally available models in AU and what Graysonline is selling as refurbish.

        • @mttk1853: Rang the number provided and they were hesistant on getting the price below 1k but he will send it off to their price department and see if they can get it below $1k. lol

        • @Andde: Hi Mttk1853, considering the laptop can not be shipped until MOnday next week and the exchange rate is dropping. Should i be worried ?

        • If you refer to previous post by ozscharfschutze on 26/06/2014 - 14:17
Exchange rate used is the rate on the day of export, so keep track against your ups online tracking on when they leave US, and then cross reference the official rates used by the customs below:
          http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4277.asp
Can't control how the exchange rate will go in this few days and we can only pray for the best.
Btw, was you able to bargain the price lower than what me and OP got?

        • @mttk1853:
I was not able to bargain it lower but only the same as you guys. They can not ship till Monday so I will wait till Monday to purchase the laptop as I want to see what the exchange rate at the time is. Everything running smoothly with the laptop ? No issues?

In terms of the AC client, that will not make any difference with me if I have a N series modem yeh ?

[@anleizhang] How has your experience been with the laptop so far ?

        • So far I found no fault on the vaio. Did everything as my Acer S3 i7 (2nd gen) ultrabook exact it is faster with more memory + better wireless client.
Except the multi touch touchpad is making me to spend some time to get use it, however there are few things u can use the screen instead of the touchpad.
In regards to the wireless n modem, there will be no issue but if you later on upgrade into an ac router you will find the connection is a lot faster.
Another suggestion is maybe you can found out where they sell this laptop locally (maybe sony stores?), go in person and have a play with it during this weekend.
As for me I absolutely love it.

        • @mttk1853:

I agree, the laptop is absolutely awesome !!! (besides the touchpad, i use a mouse anyways, and wifi).

I just returned my sony vaio today to HN and will be purchasing one from B/H on Monday.

  • Hi guys, i am almost ready to buy … either this Sony or the new ASUS UX303 Zenbook. The ASUS has a 1.7ghz processor, otherwise same specs i think … but for the same price!

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1060933-REG/asus_ux303…

Thoughts? … apart from the colour being brown… for me, this is a hard decision. I think i read somewhere ASUS do a 2 year warranty? or some kind of international warranty?

    • +1

I have to admit the hardware is very similar and this comes down to personal preference.
In turns of ASUS it seems slightly cheaper and having a little bit faster CPU, plus B&O speakers, which is common in Zenbooks.
So far I had 3 Sony laptops in total and my sister has an ASUS i5 Zenbook.
This is like comparing iphone (design) and HTC (build quality) in mobile phone world.
In laptop sony vaio will be known for its design and ASUS will be for build quality.
I was aware of ASUS always carry international warranty but I do not know whether it is 1/2 yrs. And it is just a phone call to ASUS Australia to find that out.
However I will still pick my Sony vaio personally but I cannot deny ASUS zenbook are good quality ultrabook. Hope it helps.

      • Thanks, that is great help. Yeah I am a bit of a Sony fanboy (e.g mobile phones) so I too lean towards design over function, and i saw the old Vaio Pro and old Zenbook at JB… Both great units, but the Sony seemed a bit plasticky and brittle, maybe to save weight?

Can you comment on the build quality of the new Vaio Pro?
        Thanks!

        • I am not sure if "plasticky" is the exact word for Sony.
Carbon fiber is a piece of plastic like (but really strong) material with ultra light weight and extremely flammable (it burns like oil), and they are very costly to made compares to metal like aluminium.
Car manufacturers use to make fast car out of aluminium long times ago and then they move into carbon fiber nowadays coz of its strength and weight saving. A small piece of carbon fiber part can easily cost $100+.

So in fact to be precise you are not comparing plastic to metal.
And it aren't fare to compare Sony to ASUS either. (ASUS company size is nowhere close to SONY.)
So I would like say in terms of light weight it is SONY. But if you prefer the security of sturdy metal of aluminium casing it will be ASUS.

As for build quality these ultrabooks are both at industrial peak, but a direct comparison will be like comparing apple to orange.
1 small thing I missed in my previous comparison is Sony got the PCIe SSD which go faster than normal SSD.

  • Mttk1853, did the laptop come with an american charger or an australian one ?

  • The 8GB version SVP13223CXB is now marked as "Discontinued".
Hope whoever interested able to jump in and grab one on time.

The 4GB version SVP13222CXB is still available however it is USD $999 which is 4GB less memory and you have to pay GST thus I do not see any point of it.

    • Hi Mttk1853,

Yes, I think the deal is finish.

Any luck on the laptop bag?? Been shopping around for a stylish one but no luck. I so like the sony one. but could not find it selling anywhere…

      http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/995423-REG/sony_vgpamc…

      • Hi anleizhang,
In fact I didn't really look at any case since the size of the SONY is very similar to my S3. I simply reuse my old bag. I also did a quick search and found Amazon sells the case you like however they wouldn't send it to AUS. You either need to get a friend to help you or use a forwarder. Hope that help.

        • I too am looking for a nice laptop bag. Any suggestions ? It turns out last nite that I bought the last unit before it was marked discontinued. Talk about lucky !!

      • Hi anleizhang,
Not sure if you still like to get the factory sony sleeve as following is a user review from Amazon:
"I have Vaio Pro 13, and bought this to protect it when I travel. It came new, but was already wrinkled out of the box. I hoped it would straighten up through use, but it never did. The outside look of the case is also very cheap, though the inside is nice. There are many better cases out there … stay away from this one."

Although I have a laptop bag myself, I might simply get a sleeve to protect my vaio pro in case I carry it inside my briefcase instead. In the meantime I am looking at something Belkin or Case logic.
