    Very nice find chook. Thanks!

    • yeah, had a dig around at the prices (and i'll admit i'm no UHF radio expert), but this seems to be a great price.

    Hey,

Haven't been on the JB-HIFI mailing list before so just signed up as I like this deal.

I assume the voucher is for 1 unit only, can't buy multiple, correct?

I also assume the voucher is yet to be emailed out.

    Cheers.

    • No, I don't have the voucher yet. I'll update the deal if anything changes.

I guess you could buy as many as you wanted. But if they cause problems in store with a bulk order you can simply signup more email addresses.

      • No worries, was only considering 2 but will wait and see.

        Thanks.

        • In that case I'd just signup two email addresses, then take the extra voucher in-store a sa backup. but I don't think they will cause you trouble

$239 delivered on ebay (from claimed Uniden Authorised dealer)
Far cheaper 5W chinese models online but not waterproof and not metal alloy case but far cheaper batteries and accessories and filled with features (dual bands, programmability) and better displays. You will probably get 2KM range with normal suburban areas so don't be sucked in by the 15KM claim here http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_uh076sxnb_index.asp Local warranty and waterproofness and metal case seem to be plus points here (though the Chinese ones I have seem to have plenty of metal when you slide their batteries off and the plastics are very durable).

For a branded 5W radio it's a pretty good price! The cheap online 5W ones might be programmable, but they are of horribly poor quality, and unless you're licenced for the extra frequencies that you might re-program the radio for, then it's probably illegal to be broadcasting on those non-CB frequencies. Also, running dual-band off a single antenna is a horrible waste of Tx-power on the radio. Handheld radio antennas are supposed to be tuned for the range of frequencies that you will be using. On this particular Uniden handheld, it would be safe to assume that the antenna is tuned for the UHF CB frequency range. So straight away, it will achieve a better transmit range than the equivalent dual-band 5W online cheapie. For a commercially available radio for the masses, it's a brilliant deal. Also, range is dependant on the topology of the land, trees and surrounding structures as well as any local interference (and also the idiots that decide to sit there swearing on public CB channels - or just in general ruin it for everyone else).

Some models can be. Many (most?) aren't. Out-of-the-box the Uniden is easier for most locals to get running quickly. No argument there. Good if CB is all you want to do and/or listen in on. But quite limited and expensive if you want more. Batteries and accessories are cheap for China models which means spare batteries ahoy and so forth (including cheap programming cables). You are not limited to dual-band models from China if it's not what you want. You can get single-band models too and if you want to use them for CB just make sure their frequency range includes the UHF CB frequencies in it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB . Personally I'd think twice about paying this much for this model even though I think it's a deal…as far as local Uniden prices go. Uniden sell for less overseas but it's a shame many are not suitable for locals. The Chinese programmable models are fantastic and 'open' enough to offer excellent performance for your buck.

Uniden of course over-state the range and battery life and leave the fine print for you to read. Simple marketing tricks almost nobody will actually see in actual use. If you are a tinkerer and don't mind a bit of set-up I'd highly recommend a China model. If not, stick with something like this.

You're not wrong about the 2Km range in the suburbs…but that's where mobile phones are handy. Up to 15km claim is clearly stated as using a repeater. All UHF manufacturers claim a theoretical max range of xKm based on clear line of sight from an elevated position which is rarely attainable in the real world.

Up to 15km claim is clearly stated as using a repeater.

On their product page http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_uh076sxnb_index.asp it shows the big 15KM claim then shows a hash ( # ) next to the claim. Scrolling down you look for the hash and see this:
        # Please note It is illegal to operate this radio transceiver outside of Australia and New Zealand

        No repeater talk.
        Further down you find:

**Range may vary depending on environmental and/or topographical conditions. Factory setting is to Australian frequencies only. Refer to owner's manual for New Zealand setting.

The double asterisks are not referenced next to the 15KM claim, which just adds confusion to their claim. Most users probably won't catch that unless they are feeling keen on reading more fine print. No repeater is mentioned and it seems they can't even put all the info next to the hash.

        • Yeah okay it doesn't clearly state that, I misread this sentence in the description.

With Range Extender (Duplex) Capability, the UH076SX-NB unit can reach up to 15km and can achieve even further range depending on the location of your local repeater station and topographical conditions.

The point I didn't make very well is that 15Km range isn't going to happen with a 5W handheld but you can't bash Uniden for the claim. All UHF manufacturers are unrealistic with their marketing in this respect.

        • All UHF manufacturers are unrealistic with their marketing in this respect.

It's interesting to compare with Chinese marketing from a major manufacturer there:
http://wouxun.com/ No such claims that I can see. Very spec-centred and less nonsense talk. Which is probably how we once were in Australia before the marketing suits took over.
