Good deal for the Asus EEEPC-701

I recently bought the Asus EEEPC-701SDX on catch of the day but this even a better price.

Eee PC Comparison List doesn't list an "EEEPC-701-AU-BK01" but may be useful to compare the above specs to the Eee PC 701SDX.

    • +1 to hueys comments

The SDX has no webcam and soldered RAM - so you can’t increase the 512MB installed
The others (and check this first!) have removable ram and a webcam.
You can put in upto 2gb ram if you reinstall xp/linux, however the os that you buy it with will limit the ram to 1gb.

  • Are these Eepc's expected to go down in price considerable in the near future (more than $30)?

    • I dont think so - $200 ish is pretty cheap already for the hardware you're getting.

Im thinking about one too - my concern is actually if they'll be discontinued as asus is the only company that sells $200 or 7" eepc's.

I installed XP (TinyXP) it's 190mb and as you install it via SD CARD, it took around 4 hours. FYI.

    • can you dual boot the TinyXP with Linux? :)

      • yes, but i have had trouble doing it, mainly because the 4GB ssd isn't really enough, and when you include the SDHC into that, it makes everything alot harder.

        • just a question,
can the computer handle say a 32GB Flash Card or USB drive?

I am thinking of buying something like this and doing the following (not myself cos I know nothing about computers, but my friend):

          Install TinyXP
As mentioned above, increase to 2GB Ram
Use a 16,32,64GB etc Flash card/USB Drive for programs/data etc.

@mick123: they can take a usb easy, as for the size of the flash card i would "assume" they would take a 32GB, but i have only tested upto 8GB. Once you've installed tiny xp, get the micro drivers for treating the SDHC card as a second harddrive (treats it as a permanent D drive). If you can't find it on google, just ask me here and i'll find you the link to the drivers.
            Hope this helps.

  • This seems to be the same model that MSY have listed for $288.

  • Horses for courses. A nice way to learn a little bit about Linux. I have eeebuntu installed on mine - better than the Xandros that comes pre-installed.

  • It appears to be sold out now, the page is no longer valid

I picked up one from the Bundoora shop last night - it was the last one they had in stock.
