Asus EEE PC 701SDX Netbook

802.11 b/g WiFi, Linux, 4GB SSD, WHITE only

The next cheapest I could find was $288 at MSY for Asus EeePC 701AU-BK01 C900/512M/4GB SSD/7”/Linux

If you're looking for the cheapest, smallest, basic netbook that you can find, I think this must be it.

A mate bought one of the $288 MSY EEE's recently because he was going o'seas and wanted something small and cheap for e-mail and web-browsing while travelling. I'm sure he'd have jumped at this one!

Re-edit 31/7 - Also, CotD have a $15 shipping cap for orders during the extended Catchathon, so a benefit if you order multiple EEEs or find some other bargain/s.

yeah, i bought this one last time cotd had it for $250 + $7 shipping.
It's good for surfing and word processing however - It takes a while to adjust to the size of screen + keyboard.
I also have a separate mouse for it, so i can surf faster. I also put in 2GB of ram, and installed xp. Finally, i put in a 8GB SDHC card and found a way so that the computer thinks it's a permanent hard drive.

Overall - quite happy with her (the laptop), great little device for traveling etc, particularly on the bus. I get around 3-4 hours with movies + sound. It comes with a little stretchy sleeve and a small power adapter.

    • Hey,

Do you know if this is the one with the webcam?

      • mine did, but i honestly can't see with this one… they look like the same product (mine was an asus 4GB 701).. umm sorry no guarantees, you might need to google.

    • Thanks for the quick review. How well does it play regular Divx movies?

      • (this is with 2GB ram on xp "lite") it doesn't like 720p movies and has jagged playback. However, i can play a 700mb divx easily using vlc/smplayer with no issues whatsoever.

        • Sweet. Yeah I wouldn't be playing any sort of HD movie on this thing. As long as it can do 700mb rips I'm happy.

          • @zhenjie: yeah, it works fine. i was watching top gear uk on the way back from canberra.
Just remember, you really need a SD[or SDHC] card with this comp, it has only 4GB of hdd space. The operating system for xp is like 3.5gb (or less depending on if you use other illegitimate ways)

The laptop comes with xandros (a tab based linux os) that is fine for most things and from memory came with vlc. However, i have a thing for xp, so i installed it.

EDIT - zendjie - see my second comment before you jump in on the purchase. Below says the ram is soldiered.

    • The model they are selling doesn't allow the memory to be removed, nor does it have the webcam.'
"a little stretchy sleeve", didn't 2nd last time, even though COTD said it would. QQQ admitted that eventually.

      Update: Yep, what stewartedin said.

  • No webcam with the SDX and soldered RAM - so you can't increase the 512MB installed. Screen is a tad too small for anything other than basic functions.

    • +1

Don't forget though, that this netbook is geared for 'basic' use, hence spec'ed and priced as such. As we go higher up the price ladder, then there will be more functionalities and expandability. I have a 1000H personally and it works well for what I wanna do. I was playing with the 7xx series, I find the keyboard and screen size too small to really use it productively. Given that the physical weight and size is quite similar, I don't see why ppl wouldn't go for a 10" IF $ is not a factor (which is negligible anyways!).

thanks.. no buy from me coz soldered ram and no webcam.

    • +1

same.. I was looking for the model with webcam :(

  • if i wanted to take this on the plane to watch movies, would i need to have the movie on a SD card? bcos there is no cd drive right?

    • +1

      Correct :)

Alternatively have your media stored in a USB drive and access it that way. If you have VCDs/DVDs, then you would need to image or rip them into a format that will fit onto a USB or SD card.

    • +1

Correct no optical drive of any sort is inbuilt (though external USB drives can be brought).
That would be the easiest way, using a SD card.

    • +1

yeah, SD or SDHC or USB thumb drive

      • +1

Both would work, at leasy with the SD card it doesn't stick out.

I bought one when they had the free shipping last time.
Yes it doesn't have webcam and used soldered RAM.
I hated the preinstalled Linux so I installed WinXP SP3 and it was perfectly fine, all the WinXP drivers from Asus's website that works on the 701SD WinXP edition will also work on the 701SDX.

I managed to fit WinXP SP3 (with the latest updates, but with all windows update uninstall files and temp files deleted), OpenOffice (full install), Corel PaintShop Pro X, Firefox, DivX codec, Adobe Reader and Real Alternative (a software for playing Real Media files), and allocated 512MB for virtual memeory, and still have around 350MB left on the 4GB SSD.

The performance of the Celeron 800Mhz in this Netbook is better than I expected, it has no problem running WinXP at all. Also had no problem playing 700MB Divx files and 720x480 rmvb files. But 1280x720 rmvb files played like slide shows, but it makes no sense to play this type of files on a 800x480 screen anyway.

Overall I am really happy with the 701SDX, given it only cost me $229, have no problems running WinXP and I can easily bring it to McDonalds and use their free Internet :p.

I put Ubuntu on mine, and it runs beautifully.
You can play 720p mpeg4 (divx, not h264), just, using mplayer. Useful with an HD-TV on the VGA port.
I just need to finish playing with it before my kid's birthday :-)

    • hey digiden! can you point me in the right direction as to installing windows xp onto the 701SDX. i hate the pre-load Linux. so not used to it! I really want windows xp on it.

  • I bought this last time from COTD with the free shipping and sold it a week later. Ended up buying a 701SD from JBHiFi which cost me $50 more.

    • So you thought the SD model was worth $50 more then the SDX model that COTD is/did sell?

      • Yes I did.

    • JB Hi-Fi have the EEE 701SD listed for $294, but not currently available for purchase.
The cheapest 701SD found via Static Ice or Shopbot ATM is $317 + shipping.
      \_/7

      • It was $294 and she sold it to me for $280. It was the last one in stock besides the display. Looking at the box now and it is marked $348 (don't know how long ago they were that price).

The 701SDX wasn't too bad but I liked the SD better.

        • So it seems then that JB no longer actually carry the 701SD and the best price for a 701SD would be $317 + shipping, so the price premium over this CotD deal for the 701SDX is $88 +/- shipping cost differences.

          • +2

@TeaEarlGreyHot: Actually, you'll find that JB's probably selling the 8GB SSD version rather than the 4GB SSD.

I bought the 701 SD from COTD when it was $259… went to officeworks to price match and found that the specs were different.

That being said, I love my 701… Bought 2GB DDR2 RAM for ~$35 and a 32GB SD Card for ~$30 from ebay.

Great investment. Just installed XP on there for kicks and testing it out now…

eventually though I think i'll put Arch linux on… it's meant to be the best performing one.

  • This one ($249) does seem to have webcam and RAM is upgradable (it shows RAM upgrade option to 1GB)

    • I presume this is the 701SD (not SDX) as it has a webcam: "Webcam: 0.3MP Webcam", so this one is better value (and should have replaceable memory).

  • I would buy that one but it says linux on the title and later down but Windows XP under OS. Maybe they just copied and pasted it. I wonder if it has the webcam as I'm looking for that
