ANZ: What's everyone doing to spend their $1500 to utilise the recent QFF 50,000 points offer?

Hi team,

This is in regards to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/151161

I've received and activated my cards, and am wondering what everyone else is doing to spend their $1500 and pay the balance off within the interest free period.

Obviously there are some of you out there that will make legitimate purchases which are necessary, then pay them off. But I'm after idea's on whats the best thing to buy and then sell for the same price (or close enough) as to get the 50,000 points without actually spending a cent.

Have looked into the gift cards option, but some users report here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150255 that ANZ handle them as cash advances in some instances, which IS NOT an eligible purchase to get the 50,000 points.

EDIT:

$1500 worth of eligible purchases (excluding fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers and premiums for ANZ credit card insurance) within three months of approval to receive the bonus Qantas Points. The bonus Qantas Points will be credited to your account within four months of the eligible spend criteria being met.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

  • Will it count if i paid my Citibank CC balance with the ANZ card?

    • No, since you wouldn't be able to do it unless :
      a) it was treated as a cash advance
      b) it was treated as a balance transfer

      Neither qualify the spend requirement.

  • I got my cards and details today. The T&Cs state an annual fee of $370! Lucky I saved the screenshot of $0 annual fee….

Is this a misprint or did everyone get the same? I assume it will be waived, but I'm not up for a fight…!

    Thoughts please!

    • Some of these card co's are freaking lazy/dody with their waiving of annual fees - so I'd DEFINTELY chase it up.

Fee was waived correctly for both ANZ cards I grabbed - but did the HSBC one as well and they forgot to waive their annual fee! I had to chase and then they charged me interested on top of this - now I got the annual fee waived (no apologies!!!) but they insisted I paid the interest on this!!!!!!

      A tad dodgy.

So yes, definitely chase up and assume NOTHING as you'll be left holding the bill - all care no responsibilty by the card issuers. :-/

  • FWIW if you're really stuck on what to spend your $$$ on I suggest this:

    • Diarise/use phone calender to set the 3mth date (a few days out from it)
    • Obviously use it as much as you can for normal spending bills (where you won't wear merchant fees etc)
    • When you alarm goes off, check your online spend (easy tally of the 2mths bills) - spend the balance of the $1500 payable on either Wish or Coles/Myer cards (12mths validity on Wish, 24mths on CM).

Alternatively Bunnings cards are the only major gift card with NO EXPIRY date - so they're something I will be getting.

Possibly spread the spend across all 3 to allow flexibility.

Wait for points to hit account - use and then cancel ALL credit cards to avoid future fees etc. :-)

  • Yes I did actually very funny I saw this post. Fees were waived. Sometimes your cache and cookies display old items on your screen. this weas the case with me. However the bank resolved it for me at no cost

  • I have the 50k points in the points summary page even though I have not spent $1500. Hopefully they get transferred at the end of the billing period

  • I also have them already on my Qantas FF page.

I feel bad, I will probably spend $1500 on my card before cancelling to "hold up my end of the deal"

  • You should spend the $1500 for the annual fee waiver, apparently the annual fee is also tied to this according to the rep I spoke with.

  • I can't find it in the other thread or a search

How do you pay it off if you don't have an ANZ transaction account

Was it a BSB or bpay number?

    • This will be on your statement. Bpay.

      • bpay code 6007 to pay off the credit card plus ur card number as a ref for non ANZ transaction

        just found it

  • 6 weeks in and I've already spent $2600 on the card.

Definitely not a big spender, just made sure I do the following:
    - pay all bills on it
    - offer to pay bills for family members (they give me back the money)
    - when out shopping with family/friends, pay for everything on the card, then get money back from them
    - same as when out dining

Now just waiting for the points to show up =)

  • Will BPay bills (eg for rent) be considered as eligible transactions for the credit card?

    • +1

It depends on the merchant and whether or not they consider BPay as cash payment, because some do and some don't.

  • +1

    check with this link

    http://www.bpay.com.au/Personal/Find-Biller-Codes-or-Financi…

Would be good if we can sticky that somewhere

    • For my biller it says: This Biller accepts Cheque, Savings or Debit Card. Does this mean that I won't be able to use the ANZ credit cards with my biller?

  • +1

Got the bonus points well before spending the $1500 (had spent around $400) or waiting any protracted period. Redeemed them via FF account already.

So pleasantly surprised at the ease in accessing them and don't have to worry about spending on extra gift cards etc to achieve the $1500 spend.

    • the ANZ reward of 50,000 not FF, is first purchase, I think they're probably putting QFF people on the ANZ award by accident

      • No mate, I know the difference as I got BOTH of them.

Received the ANZ Rewards points after a $1 paypal purchase - Bunnings gift cards with those. And then as I stated I just received the Qantas FF points from the other one after only having spent just under $400 on it.

So I'm definitely NOT getting the two mixed up - not saying everyone will get that happening but I did so should occur to others as well.

Check your Rewards section through the ANZ internet banking section - I had the points showing as pending for a couple of weeks and then a few days ago the points hit my FF account.

I used 37k of them on some WISH cards ($250) and will send a bit more on the card to get the extra 2k points I need for another $100 card - then I will can the card/s.

        • who do you think "they're" are…

It sounds like an ANZ issue

  • Since Opal cards are joke and you can no longer buy Mytrain paper tickets after 1 September, I bought my annual pass for $1400 so I am pretty sure I saved more than $350 by avoiding Opal Card for next one year.

Only $100 to left which will be spent for fuel and grocery this week.

P:s I only use train and travel during peak hours.

  • Got the points, now please advice how to use them up?
I am interested in getting either a tablet or some flights for it.
    Cheers!

  • Got the points too. Disappointed with the Qantas Frequent Flyer program though. I intended to book a return flight from Melbourne to Hong Kong(60,000 points). I also got the 10K points from Bankwest Account… Very limited flights available and additionally around $500 to pay for fees, taxes etc.
I can get there for the same amount with a low cost airline or special offer without any points.

What is the best use for the points? Should I get gift cards instead?

    • You can pay the same for a LCC but Qantas isn't a LCC.

You could try an upgrade but they're notoriously difficult on international flights unless you have a high FF status (eg platinum).

Gift cards don't yield high value but are simple to get.

      • Well for me the only thing that counts is to get from place to place. The cheapest option with Qantas Frequent Flyer points is even with Jetstar which is a LCC too.

Another example is Melbourne - Manila: 60,000 points plus $658.00 to pay. Royal Brunei is offering fares for the same amount or even cheaper sometimes.

  • How to get the gift cards?

  • Had a look at all the options and seems like flights are out. I will either go with the cashback https://anzrewards.com/public/redeem_category.aspx?deptid=62… or with the gift cards for Harvey Norman or JF Hi Fi depending who has the best tablet offer.

  • Im only making about 80k per year and I went for the black card seeing the two lounge passes per year as the incentive..

Thought I had all my ducks in a row on this one but Ive had my approval "deferred" after the 60 second check.

Did anyone else have the same issue and do you think by going only 15k (lowest amount) for the credit limit may have had an impact on the approval?

    • Lowering your credit limit will have a DEFINITE impact - as I had another card variety deferred and when they called the moron ummed and ahhed about approving until I suggested lowering the credit limit, which got him to instantly approve the application.

    • Dont think so, I applied for 15K the lowest amount and was deferred too, but got accepted in an hour or so. My salary is 100k+, I have a commonwealth credit card with 12K limit already. But note that, several banks(Citi x 2 times, Westpac, NAB, HSBC etc) rejected my credit card applications in last 2 years. No defaults in my credit profile either(from Veda).

  • I was thinking that lowering the limit may have a negative impact as their "product" being the black card may be suited towards those people they may want to be in debt for larger amounts.

My savings are over 50k which I thought would have brought me over the line for approval considering I have to service both a mortgage and car loan each month.

All I have received so far is an email stating it has been deferred, not a phone call yet to further clarify any details.

Interesting how the banks must weigh up their customers for approval, if only we knew a bit more..

  • Yeah baby! Approval came through today via phone. Thanks for the suggestion OP!
Now time to start racking up some purchases to the 1.5k mark for those points :D
Now Im wondering if the flooring for my new home could be paid for with credit without attracting a surcharge?
