  • That's a lot of TV for $399

    • -2

except refresh rate max at 60hz

      • No big deal with 60hz. You will find almost all TVs at these price range with refresh rate of 50/60Hz anyway.

  • You've got to be kidding me. I bought the 40inch Soniq for $349 on Monday.

I saw the Kogan one, but shipping is more to WA and it won't ship until August.

    • +1

Well, look at it this way, you just saved yourself $50! True Ozbargainer!!!

      • +3

I'm trying to stay positive. The E40W13C is meant to have a better panel than the E40W13A, so I assume it's also better than this one since the model also ends in A. 40 is plenty big for the space (it's wall mounted in an alfresco), but what annoys me, is that the 48 would have done a better job of hiding the cords on my wall.

But yes; saved $50. Also, if I had a 48 outside, I'd have to upgrade my 46 inside… which would get expensive.

    • +4

Ask if JB would allow you to pay extra to upgrade to this 48". My experience with JB was i was gifted a PSP without memory card for my bday. I brought it back to JB next week with the opened box and receipt asked if i could upgrade to the bundle with memory card. The guy said no problem and didn't even checked if everything is back into the box after hearing i said i already opened it. Worth a try.

      • Thanks. I'll give that a go.

        • After boxing up the 40inch to buy the 48inch, I decided against it and unpacked everything again. Then DSE had a 47.5inch for $244 delivered, so I got that, boxed up the 40inch again, and returned it for a refund.

  • I have a Soniq, the sound is pretty bad.

    • +13

As a rule, the sound is terrible on all modern LCDs, not just the el cheapos.

      • +1

It somehow makes me think, is that how they can create another product or make it popular again, the sound bar/system?!?!

        • +5

I think it's just hard to squeeze decent speakers in such a slim space. TV manufacturers also assume most people will use their own external speaker systems anyway.

  • +3

I bought it last time it was on sale for $399. Makes a good gaming TV. I have only used the actual TV part for fifteen minutes, but it looks fine and picks up an ordinary to poor signal fairly easily.

    Sound is pretty bad.

Hoax! I'm the one who knocks!

I thought you had changed your name lol

as an owner of this I can say do not expect great or even good PQ with this.. there's just something wrong with the reds (you can sort of tweak it somewhat with the "tint" setting in the service menu but unfortunately that setting is never retained on switching channels or inputs) and dark scenes in particular.. this is with DTV or high bit rate 720p mkvs

    but hey it's cheap :)

    • +3

Totally agree. I do NOT recommend this TV, the red levels are very high, playing with settings will improve them but still not acceptable and that's coming from someone who is not particularly fussy.

I purchased last sale for $399, see similar comments reviews, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/141461

From what I've read on whirlpool forums, my TV is not a bad panel, this model is known for bad red levels. After using for 2.5 months I would not buy it again. Everyone in the family comments on the reds, flesh tones just don't look right. In dark scenes the reds are particularly bad. Yes watching 1080p will help but most TV channels are SD. I have a WD TV Live connected, online streaming content like Netflix is very poor - dark content has a reddish tint/halo. I'm not a gamer, but most have said it is ok for that purpose.

Maybe I should have returned it, but it's no fun returning such a large item to store. However, there is no doubt price is a bargain at $399, I haven't seen any other 50" (approx) TVs for $400, the size is great. The flaws will still nag at me, but I'll just put up with them, I will likely just upgrade a bit sooner than planned - when there is a bargain of course!

      • For those that decide to purchase I confirmed with JB HiFi Store Manager Carseldine Qld warranty is 2 years, 1 year Soniq + 1 year JB HiFi Store.

The sound is tinny which is not a criticism as all flat panels fail on sound. There is a toslink connection only for speakers. I purchased a cheap $12 toslink-to-analog converter on ebay so I could hook up some older speakers, setup works well.

      • Thanks. Exactly what I needed to hear. I'll stick with my E40W13C, save $80 (would have had to buy a larger outdoor TV cover), and enjoy the better picture quality.

  • Anyone know the power consumption of this TV?

    • +1

Manual says :115W, < 1 W (Standby). Hope this helps, in fact, I bought one for the PS4/PS3 consoles last night

      • Thank you. Popped into store as well. In comparison to some others, it has twice the energy consumption. The staff were too busy serving others, so I left.

  • Brought this TV for same price 2 months back.
Power 'off' stopped working after 1 month.

Had to manually unplug power to turn it off.

    • You should brought it back for a refund or repair as it is still under warranty.

  • Balls. Just bought this tv for $500 a couple of weeks ago. As said there is something wrong with the redness of the screen but otherwise it is fine.

  • $8.3125/inch that's pretty good

    • -2

      ^ that's what SHE said

      • And yet your username is still what it Is…

  • For those of you who like to control basic TV functions eg. volume, source, on/off with your PVR remote I don't believe it is possible. I have a Sony PVR and there is no Manufacturer code for programming Soniq - I even contacted Soniq Support and they said it was not possible.

  • The soniq tv settings are very limited for which if you wanted to change certain things it is not possible. It makes the television experience very frustrating.

  • I have a pair of Sony powered speakers that only accept RCA in, can I hook up a PS3/XBOX to this tv and use the audio out RCA to my Somy speakers?

I can't ATM with the LG LCD that's hooked up, it doesn't pass through by the looks of it.

    Thanks.

    • If the TV has an SPDIF digital out (pretty much all digital TVs do), you can buy $30 devices off ebay that will convert digital output to RCA.

      • Bought one off ebay for 14 bucks a week ago, hope it works well.

        • I bought a cheapie of eBay that didn't work do well. I ended up buying a kit from Jaycar and making my own.

        • Ebay link please? looking for one for my tv

        • I think they're talking about this: link.

I use one to connect my powered speakers to my computer and it works just fine.

  • Got this last night, Had the 40" soniq before this. For a cheap Tv its pretty good.

    • Which 40inch? Do you have the model number?

  • +1

    Bought this today.

It's a big tv, it is ok, for what it is it's fine. I'd have been peeved if it was an $800 TV but for $399 is has an ok picture, notably better on HD than SD broadcasts. EPG is nothing to write home about, recognises usb flash drive and plays from it ok. Doesn't have a power off button by the way so don't know what previous broken power off comment model was for but this one has standby only! uses more power than more expensive models but then again running it 24/7 it'd take 17 years to use enough power to ofset cheap cost initially. there are better tv's, you pay more for them. Notes:

Stand is very flimsy and plasticky, think the wall mount is a must soon!

screen looked damaged on unpacking, this is a residue from manufacturing and gentle cleaning will remove this.

boot up takes about 10 seconds and plays a little sound on the soniq logo.

Doesn't automatically change to PVR which is connected via HDMI when I turn on PVR (Humax). It would be nice if it did this.

why do all tv's in AU come with a 1 year warranty? what is it about Aussie consumers that means they only think ANY tv lasts a year?!?!?! My old tiny hitachi 32" worked fine when we sold it for 8 years and the Toshiba 7 before that before again sold! I'd hope for 3 out of this one or 8+ from a name brand but nope. JB Hi FI " one year mate"!?!?! Good luck getting 1 year past the ACL son!
