COTD - 500GB 2.5" HDD for $120 + $7 Shipping

370

I just got this from COTD email. Just ordered one. I think this is one of the cheapest one (Can't be bothered to search for the other lowest price – if anyone knows, put it in comments).

Ends tomorrow.

  • At $127 that is the cheapest I can see.

    • AnyPC have a 500GB 2.5" for $108 (plus shipping) but it's a generic enclosure and brand. The LG has a 2 year warranty and undoubtedly a better chassis.

However - for the LG XD2 2.5" 500GB in question, the cheapest on Staticice delivered is $153.68 from Mwave - so this is $27 cheaper, good deal for an already cheap drive!

      (Had to buy one).

is it an LG harddrive or a no-name brand HDD?

    • -2

Not quite sure, but intuitively I'd say it's an LG hard drive.

      • More likely a Maxtor or WD. LG don't make hard drive - there are only few handful of HD manufacturers in the world.

I have a 320GB LG XD1 and it's a Western Digital Blue (WD3200BEVT) which is extremely fast. Hopefully they use similar drives in the XD2 (advertised here).

  • hey, looks like a good deal
does any1 know if the 1TB iomega portable harddrive in the betta electrical catalogue for $189 is a misprint? i would expect a 1TB 2.5" to cost a lot more and the iomega site has max capacity of the drive as 500GB

update: …seems the iomega drive in my above comment would be 3.5" as it looks similar to one on i-tech …betta electrical should be more in depth with their catalogue details. http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/36588_IOMEGA_1TB_PRESTIGE_…

Currently there are no 1TB 2.5" drives in the market even though a couple have been announced. We may start to see some 640GB 2.5" drives soon but 1TB is still a while off and will be extremely expensive too.

  • 1TB 2.5" for $189 probablt a 3.5" as Western Digital announced world's biggest 2.5 inch terabyte drive on Jul 29, 2009 soon to be released…not soon enough, bring it on you guys, you've made enough money out of us poor suckers.

  • Do anyone know what drive inside this LG? WDC? Seagate? Samsung?

      (Copied from my response above)
I have a 320GB LG XD1 and it’s a Western Digital Blue (WD3200BEKT) which is extremely fast. Hopefully they use similar drives in the XD2 (advertised here).

did you managed to open the casing to see the HDD inside?

        • Does it matter? It's USB only anyway.

        • +1

On my drive, no, I don't need to see the HDD, it reports as a WD and that's good enough for me! I have the XD1 and not the XD2 advertised, the case is slightly different and it has e-Sata where as this is only USB.

It would not surprise me if the XD2 has the same drive, or something entirely different. The manufacturers tend to go with what's the cheapest at the time, as mentioned above any 2.5" drive will more than saturate USB2. And it's not like you can form an opinion on the unit just from the HDD brand alone.

The drive is a Hitachi 5400rpm drive.
It is quite quick, benchmarks quicker than the 160GB disk I replaced in my MacBook Pro.

    • source? i ordered this.. would prefer WD over Hitachi

A 500GB HDD has higher density platters than the 160GB, so it should definitely be faster. The 500GB should just have 2 platters of 250GB each which means the disk has to rotate less to get more information therefore the overall throughput should be higher.

This is just what I've been looking for. Seems like a very good price! Just put in an order for one.
    Thanks.

  • Good stuff. I just got one. Seems to be a Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B HTS545050B9A300 by the look of this.

  • Shame I just bought the 160gb one they had for $70, and well bought a 1TB LaCie for $149 (Officeworks) so just can't justify getting this good deal.

Also the spec's are clearly on the COTD web site, FYI.

  • nice deal, i was waiting for a 1tb 3.5 inch deal, but I thought I will settle on this one instead, sick of waiting. I need to backup my s#ht :)

  • Sold out! :(

  • Thanks everyone for the +. I think a fair amount of people ordered this so I can't blame COTD selling it out. The deal finishes in about an hour anyway.

  • Yeah, Best price i bought it from Catchoftheday yuuhooo

  • That was bloody quick. Mine just got delivered!

    • Seriously? mine've been shipped yesterday but hasn't got delivered! Looks like cotd is on fire.

    • Its not so much quick (though maybe quick from what some people expect from COTD) as not slow.
If brought on the 11/8/09, sent on the 12/8 so why shouldn't it be in a esatern state city 2 business days later? Quick would have it being delivered on the 12th (the next day), which some people have noted with orders from some other online merchants.

    • When I read the e-mail confirmation after purchase it said to allow 7 to 10 business days so getting it today was a bit of a shock.

      • Yeah that's understandable, at least you never had to wait weeks, so now you can start using it.

  • I just checked mine and it has a seagate st950032 5as drive.

  • Yep, same here. Received yesterday and it's a ST9500325AS - info here http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=04d26c9cf9c2…

Awesome drive + price. Wish I order 2 more :)
