yes, i tried and it works. you need to provide the phone number because actually you need to use the phone to talk. here is how it works:
1. you simply type the number you want to call and your number
2. your phone will instantly ring
3. you pick up and they will make the connection to the number you want to call
so basically you need to use the phone, but you won't dial the number using the phone terminal and you won't be charged.
I just tried, it has limit of about 10 sms messages daily and it will only call to canberra numbers >< still good for the 10 sms though :(

i tried it myself, i spammed lik 10 sms to my friends then it said daily limit reached ><

I never wanted to provide my mobile phone number to websites as it could automatically subsribes you to services and charge the hell out of your bill. Best way is to try using a prepaid SIM card and see if it substracts ur balance.
yeh it says in faq its totally free but just to be safe i used my prepaid number :) good luck chrging me anything :P
