$349 is the inflated manufacturers rrp

$149 looks like the normal price

but yeah $50 sounds like a deal and a half

    • +3

Following the lead of Invicta IMHO

      • +2

Hey guys I just got this SWEET $758 watch for only $99!

      • +2

Hey i've had an Invicta divers watch from Amazon for over a year. Still works.

    • -2

Not convinced if it is deal even at 50 bucks. It is 100% plastic and doesn't even look any good (IMHO).
Also never heard of the brand. I think a lot of people just jumping at t because they THINK they score a bargain.
Most would probably walk right past it if it was hanging in store somewhere….

      • Or is Peyto the style?? Googled peyto and only get pics of those nasty Chinese ebay cheepos…..

      • +4

The brand is Kathmandu, I don't know if you're in Australia but it's quite well known here

      • +4

Synthetics are generally incredibly good for actual, practical warmth in real harsh circumstances. There's a reason the average Everest climber has about 2/5ths the carry weight that they did back when it was first summited and it's not because the weight of leather, wool and cotton have plummeted.

It's Kathmandu. This jacket is for hiking in winter. Nowhere near good enough for Everest or even for skiing at Hotham, but fine for regular hiking in winter. They've tried to make it look less ugly but, well, that's not really the point of the jacket. The birds don't give a care what you look like. Do they feel as nice to the touch as natural fibres? In most cases, no. Again, that's not what they're for. Wear a comfortable long sleeved undershirt, problem solved.

Kathmandu don't hide the fact their gear is for outdoor "adventuring". It's silly to compare their practical clothing choices for specific circumstances to your personal clothing tastes for day to day life.

      • Most would probably walk right past it if it was hanging in store somewhere….

If it was priced at $59.99 as its standard price you are probably right. But that would be the case for anything listed in here wouldn't it?

        • It's $49.99 actually in store and online. If bought from the online store there's a $10 shipping fee so is $59.99 delivered from online. You could try your luck if your local Kathmandu outlet has any Peyto jackets left in stock for the $49.99 price.

    Damn you OzB!

    • all my main jackets for work come from ozbb lol

      just added another one

can claim though so i guess its ok…

      • Yes i bought the Carbon and Grey jackets plus added a Lake Blue Dobra cap for $4.99 to bring order over the $100 free shipping mark. Couldn't resist it.

    • +2

Probably you may need few more Eneloop batteries as well.. :)

      bahh bahhhh (sheep noise)

    • You could always donate the old jacket to the Salvos :)

  • +2

What is good about this jacket?
    Only online?

    • +1

It's down & insulated. I think the best when it comes to heat insulation and a more expensive sort of jacket. It means this jacket is very good in cold weather. Yes the deal is probably online only.

Have a read of this article. It explains about down insulation jackets. http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Down-Jacket-Reviews/Buying-Adv…

      • +9

OP: It's not down filled. Better remove that from deal description! Very misleading.
It is just listed under "Down & Insultion" section of site.

        • +1

          Description has been updated.

  • +1

Can also get the vest version for $10 less:
    http://www.kathmandu.com.au/outlet/peyto-vest-men-carbon.htm…

    • Yep that's the vest version. Basically like the Peyto jacket but missing the arm bits.

  • +2

Product description on the website notes "Fill 100% Polyester" - not down. In any event down wouldn't be great in a jacket which appears to be only lightly waterproof, as when it gets wet it clumps up and it's like wearing wet toilet paper. I think they're pretty nice jackets, though, especially for the price.

    • +1

Strange. It's only the Grey version page that says Fill 100% Polyester. For some reason it doesn't say that on the Carbon and Lake Blue version page. Although they must all have the same filling. In any case still a steal at $50.

      • It is listed there under technical fabric names, with their descriptions - all synthetic. Most likely all are 100% Polyester.

Time to edit the misleading Down description of deal. Hope no one bought based on that.

I came looking for a down jacket, but was disappointed. Oh well it's 25C so I don't need it anyway.

        • +1

Hope not. But any way for $50 is still a great buy at the price.

        • +1

Good for cold nights in RockVegas ;-)

        • +1

There's the Heli Jacket Men Green colour which says the fill is duck down and feather for $99.99 (reg inflated price $279.98). Is that one alright?. http://www.kathmandu.com.au/mens/jackets/insulation/heli-jac…

        • I have a nice MacPac down jacket bought for a little more than that, so was not really disappointed :-)
Besides, Kathmandu build quality is terrible. All my gear has failed stitching or fabric after short use. But for $50…

        • +1

@hollykryten: That green jacket looks like chav territory to me…

  • Great value even if it isn't down. Just a shame the free delivery code seems to be expired.

    • Yes the free delivery code was only for and tied to the previous winter clearance sale which expired on 31/07/2014. Doesn't seem to be currently any free delivery coupon codes. But you do get free shipping on any orders $100 or more.

    I prefer Arcyterx.

    • +1

Id take Arcyterx any day …… not quite Ozbargan material though…. I just about cried when I burnt a hole in my outer shell :-)…. Hard to beat them for quality but that price GTFO….

  • +2

Should note that there is a female version of the jacket. http://www.kathmandu.com.au/womens/jackets/peyto-jacket-wome…

    Just got one for Mum.

    • Thanks. Have updated the description.

  • +12

Kathmandu rrp is such a joke!! People who pay it must be idiots.

    • +10

I don't think that Kathmandu ever have their prices at the RRP. They are the rug merchants of the clothing world.

      • +2

The RRP is a device to make you percieve the price it's sold at is better value than you would otherwise. Although everyone percieves value as a fixed quantity it can be easily manipulated while we remain completely unaware of the process by which this happens.

So for example a portion of this sites users would percieve the price that this jacket is being sold at differently if the RRP was not listed although the only thing that has changed is that they are no aware of the RRP (this is what's known as the anchoring effect in action).

Just in case you were wondering knowing about this effect doesn't save you from it so you (and me and everyone else) will still have no conscious realisation that it has shaped our perception of the items value ;)

  • +1

looks like a normal jacket turned inside out.

  • +7

Found it in store and decided against it….. It's much more of a mid layer than a top layer and I really didn't need another jacket

    • thanks

  • Grey is out of stock atm

    • I just checked the the Grey mens jacket is showing as in stock from size S to XXL.

The Lake Blue version is however only available in size XL left in stock.

      • try to add a S into cart and you will see what I meant. Ended up buying a carbon one. Nice deal anyway

        • I see. I'll update the description. The other sizes from M to XXL are still in stock.

  • Thanks! just bought 2 :) don't forget to get cashback using starthere

    • Really. There's a cashback on these Kathmandu Peyto jackets?

  • +1

    cashreward cashback 6.25%

    • It's showing as 3.5% to 5.25% cashback depending on membership level on this page: http://www.starthere.com.au/Kathmandu

Bit late for though i've already previously ordered. Still 3.5% cash back would have only been about $1.75 per jacket. And i hope this starthere site isn't logging your sensitive payment information details in the background.

      • Different sites do cashback with different rates. Look under the thumbnail on the deal where it says "Cashback" for the different rates. Starthere is only one of the sites.

  • Thanks for this. Needed a new jacket for early Melbourne mornings.

  • Hey guys, Im going hiking in nepal as beginner around December. I know i'll need some sort of down jacket. Will this be a good buy?

    • It's not really a down insulated jacket. It has a polyester filling.

    • You really need to invest in a more proper one. As someone pointed out previously, this is more of a "mid layer" jacket. Great deal though I just bought the female version for my mom too

    • +1

I don't think so. This jacket is not practical for travel. You want layers for hiking, get a thin polyester shell jacket. A thin Marino tee and Thin Marino long sleeve - like 160gsm, these don't need frequent washing as breathe really well and sweat doesn't stink- and dry quicker. Don't get heavy marino's. It's not practical weight wise - ideally at its coldest, you will be wearing every layer in your pack. I think this is ideal http://m.myer.com.au/shop/mobile/mystore/superdry-203002390-… I've seen it a number of times down to $70.
      I've never been to Nepal.

    • I was in Nepal (Khumbu area) during December 2 years ago.

Take a reasonably heavy-weight real down jacket as well as thermal underwear and a light fleece. You won't wear the down during most hiking, except for the highest portions or when there is snow or rain which is rare. Instead, you'll have this on in the morning before heading out (maybe for the first 10 minutes of walking) then again in the evening. Daily stages are generally quite short when going up, often 3 hours or less as its important you not gain too much altitude each day. It can be quite warm in the high country during the day to the point where at times I was only wearing a T-shirt or a T-shirt and wind-resistant shell. Fleece pants are also worthwhile.

      • Never underestimate the warmth & utility of thermal underwear. Layering a few is a great start to keep warm. You can sleep in them. Quick drying, they can be washed easily. But I do like my down jacket, so small & light, easily pulled out for when you stop moving & really feel the cold.

My size is S, but bought the Size M anyway. Now it's time for $1 cheese bugger McDonald's.
    Thanks op.

    • +1

You think you got it tough? I'm somewhere in between and the small's are always too small and the medium's are always too large, no matter how many cheeseburgers I demolish.

What's the fuss over a jacket made of cheap synthetic materials all over? nylon, polyester. wouldn't bother with it

    • +1

      Maybe it's the price.

      • Have we all gone crazy? This now is about regular price for such an item at other stores. Only because Kathmandu inflates their RRP more every year does not make it a bargain.

        • Is it though? Lucky to find a PU 'leather' jacket with an average design for $50-60 at the usual suspects, and these synthetic down jackets are usually a step above, starting around the $80 mark for a decent one like this.

I think that for the design and quality that it's much better than the Kmart/Target/DFO specials on similar but not as well designed fake down jackets, and cheaper too.

  • (Just in case) checked in my local store (Perth) it costs $99.99

    • The Kathmandu Peyto Jacket and is that their B&M store clearance price?. Then the online store deal is rather good.

      • Yes, that's their store clearance price

    • just bought one from the belmont store for $49.99… I think the price tags might be wrong ;)

  • Thanks OP didn't buy the Jacket but some other items that took my interest and free shipping also to boot, thanks for posting!

Just cant understand why some will go to some much trouble to rubbish almost anything posted that is name brand or sometimes otherwise… if you don't like the post then move on nothing for you here!

    • +7

Um… There are valid reasons why people bag Kathmandu. Aside from the RRP con, it's products are poorly constructed.

I have had their products fail in remote locations or inopportune times, like a new sleeping mat delaminating at 2500m, on a week long trek at 3000+m in Japan ( trek cancelled as I could not sleep on faulty cheap mat, mat carried all the way back to Oz for a refund - now that was an expensive lesson to learn!); fabric & stitching in packs failing after a few months light backpacking overseas; thermal underwear shrinking or stitching failing; and so on. The joke on early mornings on NZ tramps was spot the Kathmandu thermals wearer - you could tell by the failed stitching.

Kathmandu's first response was always you must not have used it correctly, so it's not covered by warranty. Never had these problems with real name brand products.

And MMM, since when is Kathmandu a name brand? It's the Aldi Special Buy™ of outdoor shops - risky unknown store trademarks you can't compare with other name brand products from other stores. The best feature given by staff of the product was often the line "You can bring it back if anything goes wrong"! (Just like Aldi.)

I now know to spend a little more to get a lot more.

(A cheap down jacket for rougher work was what I came to this deal for. But as we found out, that was not what was on offer.)

      • I have some of the lightweight synthetic t shirts they have for sale every now and then, and I have to say they're probably the best I've ever owned - warm, durable, and quickdrying. I bought four of these about five years ago, I wear one nearly every day, and they've been fantastic. I don't disagree with your overall point, though, and I wouldn't rely on their stuff for mission critical stuff.

        • It would be fine for every day city use.

  • Lucky I didn't follow through the jeanswest deal the other day. Thanks op.

  • +1

    Damn. Wanted S&M.

    • +2

      That's a cruel blow!

  • Says it uses Primaloft Eco at the top, but later says it uses Primaloft One under product features… which one is it?

  • Quite surprised that after over 5k clicks it hasn't completely sold out in all sizes by now.

    • Because it's not cheap enough. For me, the word "carbon" inflates another $20 from that sales price. And if it's brand changed to G-Star, they are sold out by now.

      • Carbon is it's colour… you don't like black?

        • Carbon is basically black colour. Saying Carbon inflates another $20 is like saying red colour inflates the price of a car.

        • @hollykryten: Yes, that is the point I was making.

  • thanks, bought the grey in large.
hoping the quality is better than the ray's outdoors one that was on here a while back; dang zipper broke already :(

  • Fabric
    Main 100% Nylon
    Contrast 95% Polyester, 5% Elastane
    Fill 100% Polyester
How do people buy this overpriced brand. It's beyond over priced.
I Went into store and was like WTF is this made out of? to be that price. Turns out what everything else at a reasonable price is made out of. Just with a cool-ish name.

    • +1

They probably don't until it's on clearance sale like it is currently.

    • It's called marketing - select sexy product (& colour) name, give your own pseudo-scientific or outdoor action trademark names no one has heard of to fabrics, add a ridiculous price (which equates to quality in people's minds), then discount until someone buys. Profit!

Just as long as the potential customer ignores the build quality, made for lowest price strategy, and general lack of expertise of staff. That's why I refer to Kathmandu as the Aldi Special Buys™ of outdoor stores.

  • -1

Recently sold (new with tags) for $53 on eBay.

  • Great deal, bought they grey jacket in Pitt Street store today, only XXL in black still available

  • Why would someone spend $50 for a cheap poorly constructed looking jacket? Seems like all the people who gave this a +1 fell for the ozbargain hype (save over $100?? it must be a bargain!!! time to order 1 even though I wasn't going to get one in the first place and i have no use for it but everyone else is saying its a great deal so it must be!)

    • Where else can you get a brand new jacket like this for $50?

    • Time will tell if it was a great deal - as people wear it. Hopefully it will be good. So many people after something Kathmandu didn't think was good enough to sell for more.

      • As i said it would be good for every day city use at least. I wouldn't use it for mission critical snowfield adventure things.
