Applecare for iPad $40 (More Than 50% off) at Big W

40

Saw this at BigW. Pretty good price if you need it. Only 3 boxes left when I saw it on Sunday.
It extends the warranty and support on your iPad for an extra year.

Not wanting to be some one to seagull on your deal but didn't the ACCC rule that apple had to extend all the warranties to a 'reasonable' time depending on the value of the product (ie >$500 was discussed that it should be around two years). I know they did that with iphones and I assumed they did it with ipads. just saying.

    • Wouldn't this cover the iPad for 3 years and the consumer guarantee only for 2?

AppleCare for iPad and iPhone only covers an additional year — the same as your statutory warranty — unlike AppleCare for Macs which extends the warranty to three years.

Not worth buying IMHO, unless (as others have pointed out) your iPad was bought from overseas or if you're moving overseas with your Australian-bought iPad. But even then the value is pretty debatable. :)

        • to be fair

Applecare desktop provides Onsite support (they come to you!) unless theyve changed this recently

And the phone support is useful for non tech savvy older users who just want to talk to someone to learn how to turn on the whyphys and three gees

its also super useful for rural customers

Yes, it's all spelled out on their web page. Minimum 2 years.
      https://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

"Without limiting consumers’ rights, Apple will provide its own remedies equivalent to those remedies in the consumer guarantee provisions of the Australian Consumer Law at any time within 24 months of the date of purchase. For the avoidance of doubt, Apple acknowledges that the Australian Consumer Law may provide for remedies beyond 24 months for a number of its products."

I've never found extended warranty to be actually worth it for anything.

Suggest getting extended warranty with Monster cables.

Suggest not buying Monster cables where possible

          unless it has antivirus

    • I've only ever bought extended warranty once in my entire life — a $50 AppleCare enrolment code off eBay for my mum's MacBook Air (back before Apple closed the loophole on such eBay codes) — and it ended up saving nearly $1000 on repairs in Years 2 and 3 of ownership.

That's the one exception for me and I guess I lucked out. I've never bought extended warranty for anything else, and as it turns out, I've never needed to claim on the warranty of any of my other major electronics purchases over the past 15 years! :)

      • Just out of curiosity, what needed repairing for your mum's MBA?

          1. Dead screen backlight.
          2. Dead trackpad.

Both seemingly small issues, but the tightly-integrated design of the MBA meant the entire display/housing and the entire bottom unit (everything except motherboard and battery) needed to be replaced — two very expensive repairs, if it weren't for AppleCare. :)

  • Bit of like "we'll sell you what you should have got by law, but deliver it with less fuss and maybe a smile" isnt it.

    • Lawyers do that all the time.

  • Ah yes I do remember reading something about that. Good point. One thing to note is that is only Australian consumer law. I guess if you were going to be overseas and needed to use the warranty then the Applecare will be international.

AppleCare is also useful to gain a two year warranty for those iPads purchased from Kogan or similar where the ACL does not apply.

  • I was at the Apple store a couple of weeks back when I went to pickup my replacement MacBook. I ask the "genius" about Applecare and the ACCC. After a few back and forths with him saying I'll get complimentary phone support etc, I think I hit the nail on the head when I said this:

"So if I have an iPhone and it has issues at 1.5 years of ownership, what is stopping me from coming into the Apple store and getting my replacement/repair as opposed to calling Apple and waiting several minutes/hours for a customer rep to tell me to take it to the Apple store anyway?"

After that, he actually admitted that Applecare wasn't worth it if that's the case.

I think this would apply to iPads as well.

In summary, I think AppleCare is pointless for iPhones/iPads if you live near an Apple store. However, for Macs, it may be worth it for the extra year depending on your situation.

  • Standard phone support is 90 days, AppleCare takes it to 2 years. Good value for those that need or want to call Apple for support on how to use their device. Great gift for the olds! ;)

  • Bought my iPad mini and 5s from Kogan eBay deal few weeks ago. Is it Worth getting AppleCare?

  • What about the fact AppleCare cover "accidental" damage for $50, rather than the replacement cost program they have for damaged screens. Unfortunately, my child is a little clumsy and not so careful at times, and had managed to do a singular crack if the screen, covered by warranty, as there was no evidence of velocity, whereas, now she has just placed it on a table on a folder which had a nice incline to fall straight onto the floor - definitely will not be covered under warranty. Before you tell me, if a child can't be responsible, they shouldn't have the privilege; I agree, unfortunately, it is required by school… Wishing I HAD purchased AppleCare

    • As far as I'm aware this accidental damage cover is only available in the USA, not Australia?

      • Oh really?? Thanks for the heads up. Sometimes it is hard to get relevant information by country on the apple website.
