Brother HL1110 $45 @ Officeworks

80

Cheap Mono Laser. I went to buy ink for my inkjet but bought this instead. Print quality is OK (on Fine setting) and its fast.
No wireless, but if you have a wireless router with USB printer support you can plug this in.
I have this running off my Linux file server no problems.

how about posting a pic of the price, or a receipt, or a catalogue link to verify the $38

      • I bought it yesterday. Maybe the sale is over, there was a whole rack full though.

I bought this printer for $38 from Officeworks Noarlunga SA yesterday. It works prefectly fine and is very fast, but text could be a little sharper (there's dithering around some letters). Still, at $38 one cannot really complain.

Note: The official Brother toner cartridge costs $53 at Officeworks for 1000 pages of print. 5.3c a sheet. The cartridge included with the printer does 700 pages for $38. 5.4c a sheet. As the drum needs to be replaced every 10 toner cartridge changes you're financially better off throwing out the whole printer and buying another one when the toner cartridge runs out. Or buy third party $15 toner cartridges off ebay.

The Officeworks checkout staff offered me 2 years of extended warranty for $5. I politely declined as the offer is pretty hilarious. As if someone will return with a busted $38 printer in 2 years time, especially (as noted above) you're financially better off throwing the whole thing out when the toner runs out.

Yeah they're not comparable to office printers but mine got better by going into print preferences, change from Graphics to Text, and set Fine print quality.

      • I had mine set to Graphics and Fine. Sounds like changing to Text mode removes the dithering. Will try it.

Can the starter tone be hacked to keep printing even if "empty"?

Had a hackable one that 5 years on and thousands of pages later, is still on the "starter" toner.

    • It seems doable. Search Google for "Brother HL1110 toner refill". There are several youtube videos describing the process.
