  • No good if you are already running Norton…

    Terms and Conditions

This is a 1-computer 6-month license, for home use
Take note this freebie is really an extended trial of Norton AntiVirus 2014 instead of an actual license. In terms of features and protections, there are no differences between a trial and a real license -- you get all the same features, updates, and protection. The difference arises in who can install it. If you have used Norton AntiVirus 2014 in the past, then you might not be able to install an extended trial and thus won't be able to get this freebie. (If you haven't used Norton AntiVirus 2014 in the past, then you can get this freebie.)
You get free updates for six months
    No free tech support
Must be downloaded, installed, and registered before this offer is over
    May not be resold
No refunds and exchanges; if you are having trouble activating or registering, please ask for help

The deal is for people who have never tried Norton, I guess.

    • Ignorance truly is bliss!!! ;)

    • Sorry you are getting downvoted - I suppose it is a bargain. Just a horrible piece of software :)

    • After the licence expires, it constantly pesters you to renew :\

      • pretty much like any software…

Nice try Norton… Not even for free will I use your software :)

  • Back in the day Norton used to bring any PC I tried it on to it's knee's. Haven't tried it since, but even for free I don't want the hassle.

  • Bloatware not software ….. even if Norton paid me I wouldn't install their Bloatware. Be careful!

    • Sure…. If they were to give people $5 to download it, I bet everyone would do it and it would be top rated on the ozbargain home page….

      Typical hypocrites…..

      • Norton got 380 upvotes only a few months ago!!!
Mind you, they did have to give us a free 32GB Micro SD Card to get the votes!!!

I don't understand all the hate for Norton? have had it installed for 2 years and does the job - trend Micro on the other hand not so much.

    • Agreed, if you have problems with poor PC performance look elsewhere, not at Norton. Start with registry corruption, its common and a PC killer. I've used NIS for ten years on five different systems without issues. My desk top is currently an ancient Intel Pentium 4HT 3Ghz (Dell Dimension 3100, 2004) and it runs Vista Ultimate with NIS and performance is always brisk :-). Here's a hidden benefit with Norton, they run a 24x7 Chat Line with skilled techos that can assist on any Norton issue and all at NIL cost!! Try getting that sort of free support from Microsoft on Windows issues. I've used it many times on licencing issues (installing new licence period on old licence usually) with 100% success and these guys are ALWAYS helpful and knowledgeable. The Chat Line can be a bit difficult to find (they'd prefer you used FAQs, Forums, Blogs etc) but it's there in Support if you look hard enough.

Norton AV started as a good product. This was more than 10 years ago. But after a while it got more and more bloated. And I mean BLOATED to bring a supercomputer to its knees.
This is where it got the bad reputation and this is where all the hate comes from. It may have improved in the meantime but many people still have a bad taste in their mouths.

Personally I stopped using it then and I would not install it now even if they paid me. And I am not the only one.

      • In 2009, they ditched whatever they had and started fresh, it's been a lot lighter since.

I have 360 on my PC, at the moment i has two processes running consuming no CPU time and 12.1MB of RAM. It usually does scans etc. during idle time.

  • I wouldn't even bother if they paid me, in fact I didn't when HN had that deal

    • Are you talking about the free 32GB Micro SD Card deal??? I didn't either!!!

If the only benefit versus bitdefender is it doesn't ask you to login every bloody day, then it's worth it for me. Also I don't know how old your guys' opinions are of Norton stuff, but I remember upgrading to the 2008 or 2009 version and they did a huge amount at the time to increase performance and remove bloat. It worked pretty well after that, but I don't know if it's gotten worse again in the last few years.

    • +1

No but some people made their minds up and nothing will ever change it.

    • It works perfectly fine, without slowing down your PC, try the new version and write a review yourself, you will be positively surprised

      • From my super early impression it seems that way; installed it and it really isn't doing anything noticeable in the background. Hopefully it stays that way.

The newer engines seem to be fine, it's the older stuff that's slow, bloated and on occasion bring the workstation to its knees.

Norton is the pits. Resource hogger, its bloatware. Its basically for computer illiterate folks because they know no better. If u say this is a good antivirus software for a computer you are kidding yourself. Oh wait, you have used it for the last x years of course its good.

It's one thing to be a Norton hater, we all have our opinions. It's another thing again, and totally unacceptable arrogance, to characterise people who believe Norton products are OK as illiterate. I spent nearly 40 years in IT and I'm a long way from 'computer illiterate'. I use Norton because 1. they're a long established and successful company with technically sound products that have stood the test of time. 2. the products actually provide the protection they're supposed to (I've variously used AV, NIS and 360 since 2003 with NIL failures) 3. their products come at very reasonable cost and you can generally buy at way under the RRP anyway. 4. they provide excellent after sales support at NIL cost. 5. While any computer security management tool necessarily uses system resources, in the event that you need to do some sort of resource intensive computing (like playing games) there are controls in Norton that can be used to deactivate background tasks for a specified period (Silent Mode) but NOT the intrusion screening.

  • Running Avg free for years never had a problem.

don't understand why i would pay for an antivirus software.

Unless u keep visiting funny sites i guess.

  • I use Trend Micro. very transparent. I will not use kaspersky because they sponsor manly.
