Where in the lounges are they going to fit these new members? Most lounges are already packed.

    • indeed plus you seem to be able to earn QFF points on anything these days which means more people enjoying the benefits :)

  • WHat exactly is the point of that? Not saying it is no good just don't understand what it is.

    • Qantas lounge and Frequent Flyer program.

    • The Qantas Club is Australia's largest domestic and international lounge network with more lounges than any other program and a range of benefits for members to enjoy:
      - Award-winning loungesĀ± including 24 Qantas Club and regional lounges in Australia.
      - 11 Qantas International Lounges including new lounges in Singapore and Hong Kong.
      - 12 associated lounges and selected partner lounges.
      - Additional complimentary checked baggage allowance.
      - Discounts on Qantas Meeting Room rates.
      - On Departure Upgrades using Qantas Points on Australian domestic flights.
      - Share the experience with a guest and up to two children in Qantas operated lounges.

Aka, when you fly, you don't have to slum it in the hard airport seats, you can go and fight for a lounge chair and get free alcohol and food.

      • …when you fly Qantas or Jetstar
Great for us who fly jetstar a lot.

The booze is good…the food is quesntionable……especially when making a toasted sandwich is the best option most times

    • Gantas club give you lounge access. You can use the lounge access before your flights to have something to eat and drink alot of booze. This is great when you on domestic flight that only include refreshment.

Most value is for international flight when you can wait in the lounge and be more comfortable.

The other way is to earn your way to GOLD which requires 700 points. Cheap non business flights are only worth 10 and flex are 20. If you fly every week to Melbourne, it will take average 5-6 months to get this status.

Some people do not want to wait 6 months and it is tax deductible if you use it for work trips. You can also bring one guest. So maybe you can share the cost if you travel with a colleague all the time.

i wonder if they are trying to get a lot of sign ups before they sell their FF program off? was in the financial review a couple days ago

We could pool our money together and do a group-buy.

  • Isnt this cheaper through that recent ANZ credit card deal if you got the black card? I recall reading it being like $410?

    • No. Incorrect. It was $400 for a 1 year. That was before the QANTAS price rise a couple weeks or so back. I dunno if the $400 still applies. Ill call to find out.

*****Sorry I misread your post, I thought I read $140.

  • Yeah its $400 isnt it?

  • I have had the misfortune of visiting the Qantas Club in Perth. Bogans in high vis workwear drinking as much free piss as they can and farting in unison before they board their flight to a dry mine site.

There's only one rule in Fart Club…

I was a member for many years, and stopped last year as I don't think it is worthwhile anymore.

Even a few years back i remember it was around $500 for 2 years, and the prices have been rising astronomically.

At $925 for 2 years you have to fly A LOT, and drink a LOT before each flight to make it worthwhile. The food is generally quite average.

As people have said, they are very crowded these days. If you just fly a few times, you can buy passes on gumtree for single entry from those who are selling.

    • same - I was a member for as long as it was worthwhile, which stopped being so end of last year

domestic lounges were like a pub during happy hour… which wasn't totally bad as I could sink 3 beers rapidly before boarding without looking like a yobbo :D

international lounges were where I got the benefits of quiet time to shower/nap/work

now I'm quite happy to spend my (or rather my employer's) QP money on more useful things.

    • Exactly. Tragedy of the Commons.
One year individual was $400+ last year. Now is $800+ and a 40% discount??!!!
Was great for the Jetstar frequent flyers.

Maybe Qantas can "simplify" the Qantas Club for us by removing all of the chairs. It's not like you can find an empty one anyway. Their next "enhancement" could be to stop providing food as it was rarely edible anyway.

  • After 10 years+ at Platinum or Gold I recently downgraded back down to Silver and was pleasently surprised to see that my three year membership to the QP (Qantas Pub) that I got in 2000 for $300 was reactivated and so I still had an additional two years to go on it. The annoying thing though is that you HAVE to fly QF (or JS) to use the lounge. If you fly CX which is part of OneWorld, your QP card means nothing to them which is very annoying.

If I knew this would happen I would have paid $900 for the AmEx Platinum card which has Gold equivalent membership inbuilt into it back in March. Now it is $1200 and no OneWorld Gold access, instead it is Virgin locally and Priority Pass internationally (which is not my preference).

A admit I pay for membership as a work expense.
The occasional deals where they have 2 years for the price of 1, or 50k bonus points are much better IMHO.
As others have said, long haul international is where Qantas Club membership shines: a transfer is so much better if you can take a shower and have something nice to eat/drink in the lounge before your next flight.
Also, on international flights you get to check-in through dedicated counters, and get the same baggage allowance as gold members. Plus, I am not sure if they're meant to, but I've been given those 'priority' pass things which allow you to fly through customs/immigration.
If you happen to get the Gold status then Qantas Club is placed on hold until you drop back to Silver.

    • I've received the priority pass things without any special memberships. I assumed it was given when you had tight transit times between long haul flights (e.g. SYD-LAX, LAX-JFK).

      • This was for clearing customs here in Australia on departure. It was a special lane where there was no lines, mainly pilots etc.

    • Plus, I am not sure if they're meant to, but I've been given those 'priority' pass things which allow you to fly through customs/immigration.

Express Path cards. Qantas gives them to First/Business passengers and those with CL/P1/Platinum/Gold status (or oneworld or Emirates equivalent), but I'm not sure if it's a stated benefit for Qantas Club members. If you were checking in at a business class counter, the check-in agent might have given it to you out of habit!

The departure Express Path cards can save a significant amount of time, but I almost never use the arrivals one (I have dozens of unused ones) because SmartGate is typically quicker. :)

      • Yep: that's them. Work wonders.

  • $510 for a few stale biscuits and cold/salad items; not to mention the hideous 'barista' coffee.. forget it
