  • any good? still using a sony one i bought yeaaaaaaars ago, time for an upgrade.

I don't think changing from Sony to Bush is an upgrade, although Dick and Bush is a good match?

    • No they're terrible.
Unless of course you've got a transmission antenna next door then it might pickup DAB signals. Although Its the govt fault for only allowing weak signal transmission power.

I have two dab radios (not Bush) and both are a bit useless with the weak signal cutting in and out. I attached wires to extend the antennas and it improved the signal in one location but not the other. Are there any experts with advice for improving.

        • some digital radios have a signal strength mode (this one does for example) that displays errors in the signal that had to be corrected.

Digital signals are a bit funny, since it's impossible to know how to position the antenna to get a good signal vs. just an OK one, as the built-in error correction is designed to hide the traditional hiss/snow/noise that you used to get with analogue. Turn on that mode (display of signal quality/errors), and use it to find the optimal spot for your antenna.

To give you an example, I started with this radio's antenna stretched in a vertical line, but my best signal was actually achieved with it just dropped behind the radio in a curved horizontal mess. Go figure.

Also, the length of an antenna is related to the wavelength of the frequency you're trying to pick up. Simply adding a bit (or taking a bit off) isn't generally the best way to go (unless you're doubling the length or changing the antenna type). As you can probably imagine this is quite a complex topic, and having said that, sometimes things that shouldn't work in theory actually do work in reality.

          Best of luck!

    • I picked up a Sony XDR-DS21BT at JB Hifi a few months back and it has been great. I compared it to all of the Bush models in store before buying and felt the Sony had much better DAB reception and speakers (clarity and volume). But the best price I could get on the Sony was $128 so …

Bush was big in the 70's, but not so much these days.

      Making a cumback?

you can't dim the display much either. If you like sleeping in a dark room, then you need to cover it up overnight.

I got one last time DSE had the sale, the sound is pretty good but as Tim mentioned above the 3 dimming settings on the clock are, none, bright and the sun. From what I was told a few years back, red digits are the best colour because the light doesnt illuminate the whole room. Either way i had to stick a piece of red plastic over the numbers to work as a diffuser of the light.

  • I thought alarm clock radios would be alot cheaper these days knowing technology has improved so much in every other category.

    • I think part of the reason for higher cost is the DAB licensing fees.

  • EDIT: I just had a closer look at this one and it is different model to mine. But it looks pretty much identical.

I bought this from bigw, been using it for multiple years, too many years that I don't remember 3~4yrs +.
    Not a single issue.

Sound is crystal clear. Features are perfect.
The user interface is terrible because each button does multiple functions, but you get used to it.

The LCD isn't that bright when off in a pitch black room, so I don't know what people are complaining about.
When it is on, the LCD is brighter.

Would recommend at this price incl delivery.
