Good headphones, but no noise cancelling for those who need it.

  • Is it good for gaming

    • there's a low latency mode

      • +14

        From Rtings:

"The Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2 can only be used wirelessly via Bluetooth, so they can't connect wirelessly with PlayStation or Xbox consoles. They can be used wirelessly with Bluetooth-compatible with PCs, but even with 'Low Latency Mode' enabled, their latency is a bit too high for gaming."

        • +1

this is a non-issue if you're okay with plugging the headphones into the controller.

    • +4

Not ideal when using Bluetooth, but fine when wired. If you don't need the Bluetooth, maybe go with something else. E.g. HyperX Cloud III comes with a mic and is around $150 on Amazon AU.

For a better soundstage for gaming, I'd recommend an entry-level open back set like the Sennheiser HD 560S which have been as low as $120 a month ago. But you will need a seperate mic if you playing multiplayer.

      • +1

I bought the Cloud 3 and wish I didn't, others have told me I am a lot more clear using that mic which is a plus.

For me though there is a clicking noise when people talk over Discord, the only way I found to minimise the clicking was uninstall the extra software however doing that then makes music sound worse as you lose DTS and all that. I read others have the clicking as well after some recent updates but they haven't fixed them.

Any of those virtual sound surround settings for headphones are snake oil. Either the game is binaural in which case they'll function great, or it isn't which VSS can't add.

          • @thecloudking: I use some rather old Razer virtual surround sound software with my ancient Audio Technica open backs. I have to calibrate it every reinstall (twice in the past 10 years). Still makes a huge difference in csgo for me.

        • Try this for music

          https://www.fxsound.com/

I find it makes a big difference for music & TV/movies on my PC.

The software is completely free & open-source.

    • Maybe best to use with cable if Bluetooth is too slow.

    • I'd get something more comfy, these get pretty hot and uncomfortable

    • +1

I've been using them for about 2 years now I think for gaming mostly in FPS and never notice any significant delay. I do have a dedicated wireless received (Wifi/BT) for my PC so that may help maintain the strong stable connection.

    The best for clean listening

Debating whether I should get a pair or not. Already got too many laying around.

Well that didn't take long. Grabbed a pair.

Within 2 minutes of ordering my order is ready to click and collect. Liverpool JB is super quick!

    • +4

I'm still reluctant. Maybe I need to grow a pair.

      • Delay no more!

      • +1

        One's enough

  • +5

Not sure if it is a pricing mistake or a new verison is coming out

It reflects the reality of their quality in the current headphone market, the marketing sheen/hype is long gone.

      Lol

      • Lol

  • Wow cheap as

    This or similar priced Bose?

    • If it's a Quietcomfort anything over ears, go with Bose. Unmatched comfort, fairly adjustable with EQ if you use Android. Fairly clean and balanced sound straight out of the box

      • Got the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Anniversary edition. The ear cups were too small for my ears. It was so dang uncomfortable to wear.

        • It's a common problem for my boofhead too.

Any recommendations for those of us with heads/ears on the larger end of the scale?

    • +1

What Bose headphones are you getting for $139?

      • +1

The old gen QuietComfort SE came down to almost this price with a sale + Student Beans last year, but the usual price is like double that

  • This or momentum 4 or sony wh1000xm4/5?

    • +9

pretty sure those are double the price of this one

      • I know
        Thats why i am asking?
        Checked momentum 4 instore-impressed

        decisions, decisions

      • +1

Honda CR-V or Toyota Prado? I can't decide

        • Lol! Blue underwear or black jacket? What do I do?

    • For audio quality? Momentum 4 or AKG N9 @ $200.

    • Be in mind this one are monitor headphones. The sound signature is flat. In other words, bass and other mainstream aspect could not be much present in this one as some expect.

  • +1

I can't live without noise cancelling 😂 for the moment anyway

    Thanks OP bought 5

    • how many ears you got

      • 5x2 = 10 ears

  • I have a pair of these but the cushions are gone, anywhere where I can get a cheap pair of cushions for these?

    • +1

I replace my earpads with ones from https://www.brainwavzaudio.com/

      • Thanks @lemotank, I'll have a look!

        • +4

Be wary of replacement pads with the M50x series - the stock pads have some angled section something or rather and aftermarket pads can drastically change their soundstage. In most cases it loses a lot of bass. I've tried brainwavz before and had this issue (partners m50x) and just used the brainwavz on my Shure 840s instead (sound great).

Sometimes OEM is best - they offer 'mesh' style ones now too https://www.audio-technica.com/en-au/at-m50xpads-mesh - which may help keep the soundstage and be less prone to flaking?

      • +1

I use these with my ATH-M50XBT2. Big fan of them.

Ive got bigger ears and the stock ear pads are smaller and uncomfortable. These are much bigger ear pads by comparison fyi.

Thank you so much, just bought a pair for my guitar practice

  • +1

Do they sound as good wired as the original 50s or is there a sonic difference? My original ones are getting old.

    • They do not. If you want a new wired that outperforms them, try the FiiO FT1 via AliExpress deals. About $160-$180 after cashbacks.

      • Oh man the ft1s are amazing for the price, tried them at a2a after seeing all the hype and was blown away.

    • +1

You can just use them wired if you want. As per online forums, the LDAC mode is the closest to the wired performance.

  • +5
    • Hard to say - I've not heard the AKG - on the assumption the m50x sounds the same wired/wireless - I'm not massively impressed by the M50X - they just sound a bit dark.. and muffled almost? At least to me. I've also never liked the headband of the m50x (also prone to flaking) but i imagine any pleather is going to have this issue.

    • AKG by far, just remember to EQ either way.

    • Thanks, I just bought both with the $30 off coupon

    • AKG has noise cancelling. Very different.

Just from a quick listen, I think these sound more flat than the AKGs.

  • These are great headphones. good price

  • How many devices can this connect at one time? I sometimes bounce from my phone and laptop and iPad.

    • +3

It has multipoint. Can connect to two devices at the same time.

  • +2

These are brilliant cans, and a very, very good buy at this price.
For any environment where noise cancelling isn't needed they will beat any NC cans hands down.

  • Got V1 of these in 2019 for $199. Still strong.

  • I have a related model, the ATH-M50XBT. Not sure what the difference is but I’m v happy with them and they’re also on sale at JB for $99 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/audio-technica-ath-m20xbt…

    • +1

The $99 ones are the 20 not 50. "Missed it by that much Max"

      • Whoops. Either way the 20 is the one I have and am pretty happy with.

  • are these any good for using on a TV? i need headphones so i dont hear my wife in the background lol

    • There's no noise cancellation. So no

      • +3

There is passive noise cancellation by virtue of them being closed back headphones, but no active noise cancellation.

It might be enough, but I wouldn't get these unless your budget maxes out at $130, and even then I'd be scraping around for AKG N700NC M2s if anyone still sells them, or getting Final Audio's UX2000s.on sale, or Sennheiser's Accentum Plus (again, on sale).

        • +4

Genuinely at every price point you have the most enlightened knowledge i've ever seen. you should have a buyers guide or something. Any time somebody mentions a headphone, you know like 4 alternatives that are better and cheaper that i've never heard of.

    • from experience these will help but you might need to purchase the "cone of silence" from Get Smart if you truely want peace and quiet ;-)

    • -1

On an unrelated note, are you a user of cuktech products?

  • -2

I've been using them for about 2 years now I think for gaming mostly in FPS and never notice any significant delay. I do have a dedicated wireless received (Wifi/BT) for my PC so that may help maintain the strong stable connection.

I like these as I prefer an open-back vs closed as talking with ANC also feels/sounds weird to me.

    • These are closed - they aren't open.

      • My bad, got my terminology mixed up. I mean they don't seem to have a lot of passive noise-cancelling like other closed-backs I used in the past.

When you're wearing them similar to other open-back designs you can hear yourself speak fairly clearly while using them.

        • I think that's because the cups aren't recessed much. Very shallow cups.

    • +2

BT will always have delay, its supper obvious when playing FPS, gun shot sound is literally 0.5 second after you click the mouse

      • I am not getting a half-second delay wearing these in any games. That is a crazy high number to experience.

  • Picked up a pair for dad today and he loves them compared to the cheap k mart one he's been using!

  • is this better than the 199 headphone deal from jb last month that i didnt buy?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/918887

    • JR would have bought that

    • AKG NC would be better.
No more bluetooth headphones for me. I have moved onto IEM…

      • thats what i have now IEM a chinese one its green color i forgot the name. the mic on it is terrible, but i do like the idea of noise cancelling headphones, however i also do hate anything heavier than airbuds in the ear, ive tried many over the ear headphones and they just get heavy and sweaty after a few hours and my ears feel the pressure, its one of those peer pressure FOMO deals, ive never had a bluetooth over the ear headphone anyway, always earbuds and airpods. but ive had wired headsets (hyper X) but always hated them due to them feeling annoying after a few hours of ear, you know when you take them off and you get the sigh of relief from your ears which feels like they were pressed up against y our head and there is a slight heat emitting from them now after removing the headphone

        • Yes I do

        • Green Chinese one… SG Wan Er? Good choice for the price. If you have those and don't like how warm any over-ear headphones get, then you made a great choice and saved a lot of money.

  • How would this compare to my old (but still good) ATH-ANC9 - if I don't need noise cancelling and just comparing comfort and sound quality ?

  • ah man'
    such a good price.
I already have the old mx50 though :/

If only I could trade it in

Can someone suggest a good gaming headset ?

    • I bought a SteelSeries Arctis 7+ from eBay last week for $120 withthe extra 30% off code. I still haven't received yet. the feedback from ozbargin seems good

  • I have a pair of these and love them! Did a lot of research and listening to different headsets before purchase and these sounds a lot cleaner, clearer and louder than other models. Use them for music and TV (connected to chromecast) without any noticeble delay.

  • Thanks! Replaces the pair that my daughter has permanently borrowed.

  • Overrated. 20 years ago these were good because there wasn't much competition, but today these are really cheap sounding.
