  • this is an 'ok' oil, just ok, not great but hey, $16

its supposedly a semi synth so it'll kill magnatecs and gtx3 and valvoline xld premium

    • So you saying it's better than the Magnatec 10w-40??? How does these 2 compared with each other?

      • again, for the majority of cars and the usual driver, there's no difference

i personally wouldnt run any of these oils in any turbo or high performance car except perhaps pushrod v8s

the way i feel about it is that if you can get Castrol Edge or Helix Ultra for $30 AND you drive a high performance or prestige car, use the $30 oil

i only run my car for 7,500 - 10,000km intervals but i do drive it hard occasionally and no, its certainly not a camry

        • What car do you have?

I've got a 180sx and I've actually found that there's a small Aussie brand of oil that is unmarketted and way better than you'd expect for the price. The Gulf Western Syn X 3000 semi synth 10w40. They don't market it at all, but it's about $30 standard price and it seriously runs nicely. I suspect it doesn't last as long as the motul turbolite, but I change it every 5000kms before that could become an issue. For the money, you can change it more often and it's better for your car overall.

The repco sales are good for this too. Sometimes they've been $17, no joke. I bought 5 bottles last time they were haha now I'm almost wishing to rack up the kms so that I can free up some space in the garage from these bottles haha.

Edit: they also just put it in the same looking bottle with the same looking label as their cheapest mineral 20w50 which looks like cheap and nasty oil. So no wonder nobody buys it. But skylines australia forum members have discovered it to be a hidden gem.

        • @rhino015:

Clearly have read the SAU oil thread :P

      • I prefer the Magatec version of the 10-40. This is still a very good price for 10-40 though.

  • Delivery seems to be $11.43.
Will this work on my 2014 Hyundai Elantra?

How often are you meant to change the engine oil anyways?

    • +1

It should be fine for the hyundai, but if you ask in store they should have charts to confirm that it is ok. I change my oil every 4-5000km. If you are paying a mechanic, it makes it hard to financially justify doing it that regularly.

    • +2

With this oil, i think it should be fine if you change it every 7-8000km. and oil filter too.

      • Yep, so surprising how many people change their oil regularly but rarely the oil filter.
May as well just pour the old oil back through if that's the case.

        • It's better than leaving the old oil there, but definitely not close to as good as replacing the filter as well. If you change the oil often, I could understand changing the filter every 2nd time depending on how many kms etc.

    • +2

It's fine. Do it every 10000 like the log book says.

    • a 14 model elantra should be running 10w-30

      • +1

The way I understand it is this:-

10 means the oil behaves as a 10 weight oil (thin) when it is cold. This makes it flow well when the cold engine is first started.

        W means Winter

30 means the oil will behave as a 30 weight after it is warm. This puts a thicker protective film on the metal parts than a 10 weight would.

This "multi-weight" oil provides good starting capability and protection in cold weather and good protection for the engine after it is up to operating temperature.

10w40 is a better oil than 10w30. but it might be a little thicker when hot (more protection) but might use a smidgeon more fuel due to the extra thickness.

        • +1

          So,

I live in Sydney, which one is better or more commonly used:

          5w-40, 10w-40, 10w-30 or 15w-40???

        • +2

most garages will use 15w40. But your car specs 5w30. Hmm in your owners manual there be a chart so just find your max and min temps and it will have all the right weights under that range. 10w40 will be superior to bulk shop oil.

The ambient temps aren't a big deal unless your in the extremes tasmania or darwin.

Or just use a lube matcher

          http://lubematch.shell.com.au/au/en_GB/browse

I couldn't find an 2014 elantra in the shell lubematcher. A 5w-30or 5w40 is specifed on the penrite one. you might be better off waiting for a fully synthetic deal for a 5w30.

        • +1

"30 means the oil will behave as a 30 weight after it is warm. This puts a thicker protective film on the metal parts than a 10 weight would."

A SAE 30 weight oil is thinner/lower viscosity than a SAE 10 weight oil.
The 10 and 30 are NOT quantitative figures, they are designations.

    • 10,000 k or 6 month is perfectly fine for oil changes… you can change it every week if you like but you can go overboard with being too fanatical for absolutely no benefit.

  • +2

    I have already got 2 x Castrol Edge - 5W-40 in last oil deal…
Are you making me spend another 20 bucks on oil again?!?!?!!!
My head was like, "get one it's cheap" vs "No, don't waste more money you have 2 bottles already!" aarghhh…

Then i was thinking, Ozbargain is an awesome website, as it brings all the sweet deals to you but behind it, it somehow makes you spend some unnecessary $$$..

i'm giving up buying cheap shit oil like the above

it depends on what car you have and how hard you drive it

if you drive a camry or something bog standard then the above oil is more than good enough

if you have a performance car then buy the good stuff (you pretty much have to)

      • Which stuff do you buy for what car?

    • @ chengjianer Ahhh…. but the savings!! You know you need it… :-)

  • Perfect timing for me thanks

  • Its $16.90.

    Thought I was going crazy

    • fixed that up thanks.

  • +1

Great oil for the price. it does non dpf diesels as well B4 spec. Really even for most very modern car this is better than the standard 15w40 shop oil most dealers / mechs use. Could use it for performance cars but might have to reduce intervals.

Like I have a modern turbo diesel with no DPF. Id probably rather pay half for this than a full synth 5w40 and just change at 10k intervals rather than 15k. Probably better for the car. From 12.5k to 15k even the modern synth is looking pretty manky.

    • This is a great oil for even whitegoods Corolla/Camry's.

I put some in my Corolla and the engine was pretty rev-happy compared with the previous oil I put in (Valvoline).

      • What year is your corolla and how many kms? I'm resisting this deal for my 2011 corolla (75000km), think 5W-30 or 10W-30 would suit it better. I'm in Sydney.

        • +2

10-40 would be better than what most dealerships would be putting in.

        • @xywolap:

10W-40 is thicker than the recommended for a relatively newer engine with low km's… older engines (with high kms) require thicker oil to provide more effective lubrication and help reduce the vibration problem. Using thicker oil in a newer engine will increase the operating temperature and will subject the engine components to more thermal stress/fatigue… just my two cents… use what you like… :)

        • +1

          Hi quasims,

This was actually in a 1997 Corolla, 200,000kms. I know I'm supposed to use a thicker oil for that but I had this lying around and it worked great for me. Noticed the engine more "lively and enthusiastic" to rev lol

  • i have a lancer 2009 that will be serviced in about 2 months. I noticed the oil is a little low, probably needs about 1/2 litre top up. Can i use this oil? Does it matter that there is a different oil - although i dont know what mitsubishi would have put in it last service. In other wods can i mix 2 oils?

    • +1

Try keep to same brand/grade , if you cant get same brand get the same grade at least.

    • +1

Mate, if I were you, now would be a good time to change the oil filter and oil yourself.

It's dead easy, I learned how to do it just by watching car servicing clips on YouTube, and it makes a difference to your car.

      • Agreed. Why pay $150 for someone else to do it when you can just diy it. That's the oxbargain way, to save money. You can get this oil cheap and a filter and it's really not difficult at all.

    • Well, if you're thinking additives from one oil may contaminate the other oil then you're right. There could be incompatibility. But sticking at least to the same brand may protect you against this. Also if you change oil completely and substitute with another make then contamination is there anyway… so don't stress too much on this issue… if you still need more info then google is your friend…

  • Ive never had good experiences with Shell oil.

Since I switched to Nulon Semi and Full Synth depending on the car I havent looked back.
Oil and filter every 5,000 and engines keep purring.

    • +1

5000km full syn - think your hard earned money will serve more meaningful purpose in Unicef's account (or your fav charity's) than be in oil companies' coffers…

      • That depends on the car. 5000kms is appropriate for some turboed, boosted cars.

Spending $50 on oil and a filter every 3 months instead of 6 is still significantly cheaper than getting someone else to change your oil for $150 every 6 months and it's clearly better for your car and your wallet, so the people not DIYing it are the ones wasting money in a more useless way than those changing their oil arguably too frequently. The oil gets sludgey and dirty and gritty and increases engine wear, so changing it more frequently will make some difference.

        • Agree on your comment on people going to dealerships for this… however, think that changing oil more frequently than recommended will be of little help, IMO.

  • is this stable for camry 2003?
lst time I changed my oil used Castrol GTX Modern Engine Engine Oil - 10W-30, 5 Litre
or is it better to stay with the same brand

    • +1

I used Castrol 10-40 in a v6 camry for 10 years and now use it in the 2.4 4cyl … motor in the V6 ran like new when it was sold. That's Toyota motors for you though… most important thing is to have oil in the motor… LOL.

    • Change brands ok, dont change viscosity too often, best to stick with one. If you use 10w-40 from now on, dont go back. I suggest 10w-40 for you because they will always have cheap deals, repco runs 10w-40 $20 deal every year.

  • Is it okay to use with Honda Jazz 2005?

    • +1

Use the lube matcher on OEM's site linked in the thread above.

    • I have Jazz, your Jazz would be much happier with 5w-30, unless it is over 150,000k. It is smaller engine so thinner oil is preferred.

Honda service will normally give you Shell 10w-30

  • Hi any idea if this is OK for a 250cc motorbike the manual says 10w-40 oil.

    • +1

As long as it does not specify synthetic then this is fine.

    • +1

No idea why you got downvoted for this. I think ozbargain is starting to get like reddit where people downvote inappropriately rather than engaging in useful discussion.

      • I bought a second hand bike and got ripped off during the blue slip, so I didn't want to go and ask the mechanic again. I am trying to get as much information from motorbike forums and fellow ozbargainers. Thanks for your replies.

        • +1

IIRC bikes call for 2 stroke or 4 stroke oil? Refer to manual to be sure man, if dont have manual go online and search for discussions on that EXACT model.

        • @Azn310:

It only requires 2 stroke oil if it's a 2 stroke bike, which is very rare and you'd know if you had one. 2 stroke oil goes in with your petrol rather than separately.

Otherwise it's just oil like a car, just get the correct weight etc. They do make specific motorbike oil, but there's actually very little difference and they're generally quite expensive. Read up on it yourself before deciding, but many people just use 10w40 car oil for a bike that requires 10w40 oil.

    • it is shouldn't really be used in a motorcycle because a bike uses a shared gearbox. Bike oils usually require an additional additive package in them.

    • Bit late to the thread but - do not put this car oil into your bike. Assuming it has a wet clutch (most do), it can cause the clutch to slip because of the oil additives.

If you want be a ozbargain about it, you can put in some Delo 400 or similar.
Or just buy motorcycle oil and be done with it.

My ignorance got the better of me and got me reading up on what makes a good engine oil.

This review article is a decent read: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-motor-oil-for-your-…

    TL;DR
    * Multiple professionals say that there's really not much difference between the brands. YMMV
    * But use only name-brand oils
    * It's far more important to get the correct viscosity for your car

  • Ok, now it seems everyone gets their oil sorted, what about the oil filters??

I rarely see oil filters on special, and probably never seen half price special, why SCA????

    • If you have a Lada or Korean car (KIA, Hyundai) and in QLD try:-

      http://www.yellowpages.com.au/qld/deception-bay/lada-korean-…

Just went there today gotta put in a plug.
      Alt belt i30 hyundai = $80 dealer, there $15.
      Air filter i30 - hyundai = $50+, there $8
Twice as cheap as most aftermarket places

Not many ladas around anymore i suspect

Otherwise these guys are cheap for all brands if you put in a big order and combine postage.
      http://www.eziautoparts.com.au/

      • Are the parts they sell genuine???

The Ryco Oil Filter Z445 is a lot cheaper than SCA… $12.25+postage vs $20.75

  • If a girl buy me this as a gift, I ll marry her

    • +1

Wait… did you just say you want a wife with lubricant???

I usually like girls that have a tighter tolerance and almost bone-dry sump.

A sloppy fit and over-lubrication isn't usually compatible with my long shaft.
