Pendo Pad 8" Dual Core at Coles (Selected Stores Only) for $49 was $149

690

Yet another tablet bargain.
This time the Pendo Pad 8" dual core for $49. They Also are doing the 7 incher for $39 but the specs on this one are really quite OK for the price:
Model Number PNDPP48GP
1.2Ghz Dual Core A9 processor
1GB RAM
8" 1024 x 768 IPS (maybe) screen
Android 4.0
8GB Internal Storage
Front and rear camera
Mini HDMI output @1024p

That might be an average list by today's standard but it pretty amazing for $49!

Reviews on Whirlpool are mostly postitive and there are custom ROMS available. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2076292

I think (specs wise at least) this one is better than the other recent cheap Huawei and DGTec tablets.

UPDATE

Regarding the 10 inch model. Some are finding it scans for $49 too, some are finding it scanning for $189. It seems there may be more than one barcode perhaps for different generations of the device? AFAIK that model doesn't come with Google Play standard but it can be added.

UPDATE 2

Right, it seems Pendo do both a 10" Google Play included model (PNDPP410GPBLK) A9 processor and one without (PNDPP42DG10BLK) A7 processor. This probably explains the two prices however both models share a lower resolution screen 1024x600 plus no HDMI. To add to the "clarity" there is also yet another non Google play 9.7" A7 model which does have HDMI although I dont think Coles sold that one (PNDPP42DG9BLK)

The The 8" model has Google Play included in all models, an A9 proceesor, a higher resolution screen 1028x762 and mini HDMI. Specs are as posted above. Seems like the one to get to me.

      • Thx, mate. I think the 8 or 10 inches model is very decent. But the 7 one is kind of crap. Just decide to give up this deal.

    • Just got the Pendo 7 today - made a nice present - perfect timing OP, thanks!

As I was about to buy the $39 one, I noticed one on display with a different picture on the front which scanned at over $100.

      The $39 one has
4GB internal storage (I vaguely recall the other had 8GB?)
      4.2 Android OS Jellybean

  • World square store has no stock of any tablets at all.

Earlwood has the 7" and 8" pendopads for $39/$49

    Blue and purple colors

    • The 8" comes in a purple box but the tab itself is black.

  • -4

Do not buy it, the tablet itself has horrible viewing angles and will strain your eyes after some use, planning to return mine first thing in the morning.

    • "It" is at least three different devices.Which one did you get?

    • I have not experienced the problem described by exon-R8, even though I'm using the older 10" PeNNNdo model… No dramas re visuals/angles from my end… maybe if you have tunnel vision, these may not be for you?

    • To clarfiy, I have purchased the 10" Pendo Pad from officeworks price match for $46.55, model number PNDPP410GP, white, with play store, exactly the same as the officeworks link; http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/pendopad-10-t….
And no gnarlyknuckles, I do not have tunnel vision or any other such visual impairments, thanks for your helpful not so helpful two cents m8

      • How did you get it priced matched when there's no advertisement?

      • Can you please upload your receipt for office works?
Don't think they will price match Coles because the Coles receipt is so vague and this isn't an advertised special

        • +1

          Receipt link here:
          http://i.imgur.com/32JK0zJ.jpg
Just a note, officeworks usually don't price match off a receipt alone, although it can help. The process/method that my officeworks informed me of is that they would need to call the Coles store, confirm that Coles is indeed selling the 10.1" for $49 and that they have some in stock. At the time when I bought mine, earlier comments revealed that the Western suburbs of Melbourne, Caroline Springs/ Pascoe Vale had stock but being in the Eastern suburbs I asked my local officeworks to call those stores and price match the price and it worked.
I hope this helps you in your search !

        • +1

Got mine from OW, they also called Coles to confirm price, the one I got is the 10.1 Google play version.

      • Right so you have PNDPP410GPBLK or PNDPP410GPSLV? Well maybe get the 8 inch one instead? That's what this whole post is about. I just added info about the 10 because people were buying them but the specs are lower in several depts.
Higher screen resolution is one of several factors 1024x60 in the 10" vs 1024 x 724 in the 8" but even then its just OK, not earth shattering.
These are never going to be an $49 iPad, but they are amazing value and have many uses at the $49 price point. Cheap holiday/work tab/recipe viewer/play movies via HDMI/chromecaster etc.
It is also perhaps possible that Pendo have sourced different screens at different times in production thus the difference between yours and GnarlyKnuckles' older one.

  • Anyone able to confirm Google Navigation using TetherGPS app?..(Google Nav app always crashed on my haipad i7-ttab.)

Also, I don't suppose Gyroscope +Electronic Compass/Magnetometer would be featured on there? /probably no

  • Anyone got it in WA please?

    • +1

      i'm interested too.

other than 8" IPS version, 10" version is ok to use, but screen is biggest drawback, they uses 1st version TFT, compare to ZTE v9 and ainol uses version 2 (better viewing angle - but still bad for most)

  • I noticed many stores in Brisbane scanning $189 for 10" tablet. Can any one purchased in Brisbane upload copy of receipt.
    Thanks.

    • No I tried at few stores, it comes $189 and they are not ready to beat the price.

  • I checked at Rhodes.they had both the 7 and 10 inch versions but they scanned in at 149 each

  • Offering $10 profit for any1 that can post me one of the $49 8" Google play models. It's listed on airtasker.com.au

  • Fyi
Avondale heights - only higherpriced model available.
    Flemington - all stock cleared.
Geelong area - all stock exhausted. Bought mine from Coles Geelong west which was the last in stock.

  • +1

Has anyone successfully rooted it and even loaded a custom rom?

Fyi using it to post this message. So far no complaint yet. Obviously can't compare with ipad or tablets that cost a lot more than this one. Good value.

I think Good for kids or simple productivity work like web browsing and check emails and the like

    • +1

Mine had already been rooted (the 10" model). After installing SuperSU from 1market, it was good to go. Less success with trying to install a custom ROM - mainly because there's so little info. The SOC is apparently an AllWinner A20 - and I wanted to find a CyanogenMod compatible with it. Very little success so far. Pls let me know if you have better luck.

  • Coles Greenvale (VIC) had nothing left in stock except for 10'' which scanned at $189.00

  • Are u sure OP… I bought the 10 inch pendo pad and it has a mini hdmi input….

    • My 10.1 has mini HDMI also + Google Play.

      • Looks like you got lucky.
The Google play model mostly scans at $189. As for HDMI, it's not listed in the specs for the 10.1, but it is for the 9.7 and 8.
Maybe they added it on later models? I am getting the idea that these things could be different batch to batch depending perhaps on the deals the factory in China is currently doing. So to answer the question, no I am definitely not sure of what you will find but I am sure that's what the Pendo specs say. Lol.
BTW. What is the screen like on your 10? How would you rate it?

        • Got mine from Officeworks for $46.55 and the screen looks good to me but have nothing to compare it to. Thanks OP for posting.

  • I can confirm the 10.1" PNDPP42DG10BLK has HDMI. I also managed to get the ICS version of Google Play Store installed without rooting. If anyone knows how to get Jelly Bean Play Store installed please let me know. See my thread here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2303225

  • 10" selling $189 in WA. Checked couple of stores :-(

  • I have rang at least 10 stores now. Either $69/$189 or out of stock. Looks like I m late to the party:(

  • +1

Also no cheap stock in Lane cove. It's $189 there

  • +4

In true ozbargain style I set out at 8.30 last night to Bulleen (vic) after ringing 10 stores where they assured me they had heaps, but no go only 7's and 10's 10 scanning at 189 and no discount offered or negotiable, went home grumpy but not defeated. I need 2 for the kids otherwise our house is the argy bargy house from hell. Prior to that tried east balwyn and they said they had one but I didnt hold it as I thoughtI had 2 at Bulleen. Back on the phone tried numerous stores no stock, called Tooronga they had one, I told them to hold it and rang back east balwyn yay, but no , boo, east balwyn says they made a mistake and the one they have is a 7, back to the phone, ring all stores out Tooronga way. no no no but finally sth richmond, one left. now its 9-45, off I go ,never give up and all that. Get to Tooronga and the girl at the counter says there is one but need tofind the manager, it has been hidden away. Manager comes out, must be at least 19, any how all is good the one is for me, he asks me to fill out a form which is for a mobile service which requires a 100 pt check. I say how come, he says to keep track of devices which could be used for terrorist activity! anyhow, after laughing I was lucky I have my george costanza wallet full of every piece of dross since I was born so 100 points no problem, He tells me that they have put aside others for other people but have yet to show. Now off to Richmond, get there, the unit is not put away and is on display in the cabinet (for anyone to grab) the guy there is different to the one I talked to. Anyhow deal done (no id required) , its past 11 I travel home and collapse (due to an oncomimg cold/flu). havent got the energy to play with it, did get it out and it switched on but couldnt do any more, spent all day in bed today, the cold has developed somewhat. Just wanted to let the op and contributors know, as a low lieing ozbargainer you do make a difference to us all, Also might expose some traps for newbies.
    1) Demand that they personally check the stock and spec and price and tell them you will demanding to talk to them when you arrive.
2)Demand the stock is taken from public display and link to one contact person to ensure it is done
    3)Take id
for those still looking I would try Tooronga and see if they had any no shows.
    Mission completed
    must lie down
    sorry bout the verbosity

    • +1

      Hey nice post! Very descriptive!
Fwiw that manager person is confusing the situation with a device that includes a SIM. Definitely no ID requirement for a Wi-Fi tab, but glad to hear you got them in the end.

  • Managed to get a 8" from Tarneit West for $49, they had a 10", but scanned up as $149, so feel free to go and argue for the cheaper price.

  • I just bought a 7" device from Indooroopilly - the PP41DG-7BLK - for $39. Did I just get the crap, non Google Play one and I should return it?

    • looks like the 1mobile variant that people have been describing

    • yes

  • Coles Knox City has seven 7" Pendopads and five 8" Dual core Pendopads as of now. First come first serve, but store closes at 11pm ;)

One per person, and no holding. (I do work here if it wasn't obvious)

    • any update on todays stock?

  • Anyone got one of the 8" ones in Brissy metro area ? I was told maybe ipswich coles superstore might have em but all i saw was the crappy 7" and 10.1 at full price. I did see one of the other 7" variants but it was $148. The brissy stores i went to were pretty clued in on whats going on.

  • Got a 10.1 last night, has HDMI (mini)

  • Just called a few Coles near my place (SW Sydney) either they don't have stock or they are normal price $149. The lady at one of the Coles told me this special is only available in Vic and Qld not NSW. Has anyone bought one on special in NSW??

    • that's not true.

they were/are available (the 7 and 8" ones) at both Hurstville stores at the $39/49 price respectively.

i haven't purchased one (yet) as i was hoping to find a 10" one for the cheap price in NSW… so far no luck and i think i've contacted around 8 stores now.

      • how do I make them sell to me at the cheaper price?

        • have you tried contacting the hurstville stores and they've told you a different price?

        • @edrift: bit far from my place, I think I have to give up. Thanks anyway

        • @bb_hunter: try going to an officeworks and getting them to call Hurstville and pricematch !

  • None in Cranbourne, Cranbourne West, Lynbrook, Springhill, Casey Central, or Hampton park, Berwick. VIC. CarrumDowns Coles do have 7" ($39) in stock. Got huawei 7" for $29 from Berwick

    • do you know if there's any more in berwick?

      • Nope. I got last one and nill in above mentioned stores

  • I picked one of these up this morning from Coles in Mitcham. They have one more left there $49.

  • HELP…anyone who bought the 10 inch pendo pad…are there black verticle lines (1 cm apart) running throuhgout the length of the screen (visable on an angle only) ?

    • No black vertical lines that I have noticed and this is my second unit had to return the first as it had a loose usb connection.

  • Found an 8" yesterday at Moonee Ponds - they had to search the cabinet, shifting the 7" and 10" out of the way. Got it for $49.

Sadly, like @ahly92, the screen on mine is buggered. Either black lines spaced apart or a compressed set of coloured lines at the top (or bottom?) quarter. Pretty much static - with some bleed in from the edges. Tried various combinations of long pressing the power and volume up / down buttons for some kind of Android re-set, but no change.

So - do I return it to Coles or have a go at a warranty fix?

  • I can't get youtube to work while casting and trying to queue additional videos. Every time I press the video I get the "YouTube has stopped responding" and crashes back to the home screen. Lame

Edit. Can only cast a video once youtube is playing, cannot cannot to chromecast and then select a video.

    • It may be the wi-fi link - I have no probs, but the speed is reported as 58Mbs, about 1/3 of what the Xperia and Nexus get:-/ I'm using Youtube via the HDMI link tho, I haven't tried it casting - but in that instance, the tablet is surely just the remote. It's the Chromecast that has to maintain the link….

For those that got the non Google Play version, the workaround I found that works on my 10.1" model is as follows

Installed an older version called market but it still has all apps, just a less user friendly interface

First, download the zip from the link below:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/daxefcl4d9pa3xt/Android%20Market%2…

All you need is the market.apk file

    Copy it to your pendo

In your favourite file explorer on the pendo, click market.apk and install….

  • If they got it for $49, quick turnaround with a decent profit. Interestingly no mention of the brand anywhere in the listing.

    $145

    • The ebay add mentions brand and model number in the item description (specifics).
The winning bidder could have got it for $139 @ Officeworks lol.

  • +1

I think the special ended today.

    • +1

Yes it ended today. Now scan to $79 (8"). Where can we get screen protector and case/cover?
