Pendo Pad 8" Dual Core at Coles (Selected Stores Only) for $49 was $149

690

Yet another tablet bargain.
This time the Pendo Pad 8" dual core for $49. They Also are doing the 7 incher for $39 but the specs on this one are really quite OK for the price:
Model Number PNDPP48GP
1.2Ghz Dual Core A9 processor
1GB RAM
8" 1024 x 768 IPS (maybe) screen
Android 4.0
8GB Internal Storage
Front and rear camera
Mini HDMI output @1024p

That might be an average list by today's standard but it pretty amazing for $49!

Reviews on Whirlpool are mostly postitive and there are custom ROMS available. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2076292

I think (specs wise at least) this one is better than the other recent cheap Huawei and DGTec tablets.

UPDATE

Regarding the 10 inch model. Some are finding it scans for $49 too, some are finding it scanning for $189. It seems there may be more than one barcode perhaps for different generations of the device? AFAIK that model doesn't come with Google Play standard but it can be added.

UPDATE 2

Right, it seems Pendo do both a 10" Google Play included model (PNDPP410GPBLK) A9 processor and one without (PNDPP42DG10BLK) A7 processor. This probably explains the two prices however both models share a lower resolution screen 1024x600 plus no HDMI. To add to the "clarity" there is also yet another non Google play 9.7" A7 model which does have HDMI although I dont think Coles sold that one (PNDPP42DG9BLK)

The The 8" model has Google Play included in all models, an A9 proceesor, a higher resolution screen 1028x762 and mini HDMI. Specs are as posted above. Seems like the one to get to me.

For anyone wondering, IMHO these are good value for money. I have the 10" one. The battery life is OK, not as good as i-stuff, but hey, it's a fraction of the cost. I use mine every day, mainly:
    1. As a book-reader. It's easy to download the free "kindle-reader" app-thingy from the google-store and put it on these Android Pendos, then you can legitimately download all the free kindle-books AT kindly posts every week.
    2. As a media-player. They play all file-types I've tried (MKV, AVI, MP4, MOV, etc. etc.), and the mini-HDMI slot on this 8" one allows you to plug it strigt into your T.V. So you can play all the stuff you download that is in a format your DVD player won't play, by plugging this thinng into your TV.
    3. Browse the net from anywhere in the house. Much better than browsing on a smart-phone. Or at least I'm pretty sure it is (I don't have a smart-phone- last of the luddites! lol).

I don't do it, but my wife has used it for skyping and it's quite adequate.

SO, it's not fancy, but it's cheap and useful, if you don't have a tablet yet and you want a cheap one.

One thing I should mention though, mine won't play just about ANY of the "Android games" that are out there… I'm pretty sure it's cause of the operating system… I read somewhere I need to "root it" (seriously) to make it work, which sounds counter-intuitive to me… maybe someone on here can educate me on how to "root" my Pendo… has anyone on here successfully done it, and does it magically make all the free android games posted on OzB playable?!?

    • +16

Drop it on concrete…I am sure it will be rooted after that.
      (from JV.)

    • +1

      "root it" (seriously)

Yeah, seriously. It's just computer jargon, there's no vulgarity in this context, if that's what you're thinking. See definition #4

      • +1

Sure. Quoting from the linked Whirlpool thread.
"it's quickly recognised by Superoneclick, and the Bin4ry rooting script"
Once you've done that you could side load. IE download to a device that accepts whichever games or apps you want, then back up with say Astro, transfer across to you Pendo and install.

        • +2

There were two 8" Pendo pads. As with the 7", the first ones here were the SuperOneclick store models, but this one is the Google Play Store Model. I haven't opened mine yet, but I grabbed the last [only] one from Kurralta Pk. There was one in the drawer at Parkholme, but I hadn't seen this deal then - I was lucky, as I'd grudgingly decided to buy the $39 7" [which was one click] as they were out of Huaweis, and pulled back from the brink of OzBargain heresy when the poor girl started going through the `I need your licence.. ect' script that she was forced to follow for anything to do with phones…..

        • I got the 10" version and it's already rooted. Trying to get gapps installed on it now. Does anyone know whether it's possible to install cyanogenmod on this?

      • +1

Chuckle Prospect, actually I was joking… but rooting it seems to be a bit of an involved process, from what I've read… And once it's been rooted, it may never be the same again. That's happened to some people I know. And, I'm not sure I'm ready to make that kind of commitment yet. I mean I do like my Pendo, but… OK seriously though… is there some "free rooting app" out there? ;-P LOL

Wow, I find I am simply unable to discuss this topic seriously. Damn. I seem to have contracted some form of "involuntary pun-disease" from OzB.

  • +8

Damn you OzBargain, I don't need another android device

    • hahahahaha haaaaaaaa

  • Having already bought the DS DGTech 7", and the Huawei 7", I was considering this 8" one…

But no Google Play according to Whirlpool link configured with 1mobile.com market made me decide to stick with the Huawei.

Too rooted to go rooting this.

    • +1

Different model - it has Google play [ PNDPP48GP]

      • +1

Thanks - just read that above. Build quality in Huawei is good, but slower & I almost never use the HDMI output. So I'll stick with the Huawei.

    • +2

Bruce this model, the PNDPP48GP has Google play standard.
Just had a quick muck around before its first charge, seems pretty slick for a basic tab. HDMI out is a real bonus.

      • I like the placement of the speakers at the top - now if only they were the Nexus speakers and amp lol. The volume is not to bad, but the Graphic Equaliser only seemed to want to switch between normal [flat] and pre-sets, with `user' apparently being a pre-set…

  • +3

Is it just me or has the Pendo online shop website crashed?.

    • They were probably a local .au site, and are busy getting out of the country before the inscrutable devils press the destruct button now all the mines have been purchased………..

  • +1

Been debating whether it's worth getting one for this price. Sounds like it's a pain to install google stuff on it (e.g. play store).

Anything else comparable or better for this price?

    • I had no problem - tho forgot I was going to get the day's mail in one lump again because I couldn't be bothered making a dummy account. Play store was fine, WPS [ Kingsoft Office] and VLC run well, and the file manager and VLC quickly found and played media on a USB stick when I tried the supplied OTG cable.
Being Gingerbread, there are none of the `permissions' shenanigans with SD and USB memory.

The 8 gig storage does seemed to be double partitioned between ` system' and app/data tho, with 4 gig to each.

Comparable? - I guess the same tablet in 10" some have noticed, tho if it's the same processor, the pixel pixies have to push a bit further and harder to draw the screen. 8" is a nice compromise between portability and screen real estate.

I thought of it as getting something 1/2 as good as most 8" tablets for 1/4 the price. For games, sad, for media files and text on the run, just what the doctor ordered.

    1. Has anyone been able to find stock in Melbourne, Victoria?
Called around Southland, Chadstone, Clayton, Springvale, Glen Waverley, Brandon Park, Keysborough, Burwood East with no stock.
    2. Does anyone have an actual receipt or proper link besides OP's word which can be used as leverage for price matching or anything?
    • Was $49 in Brissie this morning. Others in Huawei 7" deal reported this price elsewhere. Both are $100 off original price last year.

    • Can't find the 8" but I am heading out right now to get the 10". There are 8 left where I am going at $49.

      • +8

A wise OzBargainer only discloses location after getting their own. Otherwise there may be none left for them.

      • +1

        You're getting the 10" Pendo Pad for $49 ??

          Much appreciated

          @Dean04:

Lucky you. Was still $189 at the Coles in hurstville when I asked yesterday.

      • +1

Double checked and the one at hurstville is the 10.1" one with Google play in it. Still $189.

The cheaper one must be the old model without Google play. Not sure of the other differences.

This one is 1.2ghz dual core

Ok Coles Caroline Springs - 6 left of the 10" at $49

You even use your missus - top ozbargainer!

    • Bought the last one from this store, really appreciate for the details..

  • Again, found none near my home. Maybe i should move to Syd.

  • Success. Only took 2 stores to find 1.

    • location?

      • VIC - Derrimut, but was the last 1. They also had 7". Pascoe Vale had both 7" and 10".

        • thanks for the help, greatly appreciated, but having a hard time down the south east melb 'burbs !

  • Can someone post the model and specs of the 10" version.

  • Ok. Just got one from Coles from melbourne cbd.
They did not display it, but kept behind the counter. Need to ask the staff.
They also have the 7 and 10 inch models.

    • Which CBD store?

      • Probably the one in Melbourne Central.

      • On Spencer st.

  • Good find OP.

Was about to go and broden them all but then thought I'd have another beer instead.

Hope the pedo pads are capable of 10 finger input.

    • Was thinking the same. Does anyone know whether these would be good for any editing of google docs?

  • ACT misses out again. None anywhere, 8 nor 10.1.

  • +2

None in inglewood, Maylands, North Perth in WA.

    • +1

Thank you. Saved me a trip.

  • Two 10 inchers left at Brighton, Bay st for speedy Ozbargainers as of the time of this post.
Its weird because when I bought the 8" model, the guys scanned the 10" at the same time and told me it was $189, so either different shops are setting different prices or there are a few different bar codes. The 10" definitely scans at $49 at Brighton.

    • Must have been lucky as I got the last one at Coles Bay St. Was told by the guy at the counter 'it's rubbish. Not like IPad, uses something called Android'. Ha had a laugh. Then I got it home and realised it doesn't have Google Play but something called 1mobile?

Can anybody help me getting google play/root on this? Don't plan on opening until I know its possible or its going back..

      • +1

        Read here:
        http://www.austech.info/mobile-phones/92308-coles-pendo-pad-…

I installed Google Play store app but have had issues with it upon further playing with it. Not a deal breaker for me as mainly for kids to watch movies on trips. Plus I can get what games I want from the default apps store.

        • Thanks Dean04

It was meant as a gift for my Father in law for him to basically surf the web and possibly Skype. Without fully functioning Play it's a dud. Thanks for your help but this one is going back. Bay St Coles in the coming days if anybody is interested.

        • +1

          @chetnik:

No problem happy to also put it to the test. I just grabbed Skype from the default apps store and it works crystal. Browsing is fast with no hangs either. Just some feedback….

  • No stock of anything at Ramsgate

  • Nice find op. Picked up the 10 incher and now playing with it. ;)

    • +2

      That's what she said.

      I'm sorry I just couldn't resist.

    • +1

did you root the 10 incher first?

      • Could you give some pointers……

  • No 10" or 8" at oatley or roselands either

  • +1

And Sylvania only had the 10" in stick for $189.

Not my lucky day! Missed out on the 7" huawei and 10" pendo.

Think I've tried 6 stores now

  • +1

DO not buy I work at a store that stock this tablet and every one has comeback

    • Mine works great! and for $49 bills who cares. If it screws up I just get a refund.

      • +2

I'm curious about the reliability of these too… we bought two of the 7" pendopads a long while back, both of them were absolute crap and not worth the money (and that's putting it lightly). They'd just completely freeze just plugging in the charger! And that's besides the random crashes and reboots. The battery would also only last a few hours use with it.

One was returned for a full refund, the other we kept… and then the screen cracked not long after that. We're now running those Asus HD 7 Memopad for the kids now.

The makers never bothered releasing new firmware to fix the software, and even though the 7" was dual core, it was incredibly slow.

I hope they've changed their support for the 8" and 10" models!

        • +1

From my very brief reading, it seems there was an earlier generation of these devices that didnt have Google Play installed whereas the current ones do. I presume the first gens has weaker hardware.

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:

Even with the 7" pendo tablets, they had two versions - we had the Google Play version. But the problem with the tablet was the underlying Android version they used, it was VERY buggy and they didn't update it at all. There was no real third party ROM support for the device either.

      • If it screws up I just get a refund.

If you read the comments from Coles, looks like they don't offer refund when you change your mind for Electronic Items

        • That's not what they said. AFAIK the only thing they don't do CoM refunds on is mobile phones. That's why you tell them it's defective (or sell it on eBay for more than you paid, like I did).

    • +1

molemac which model are you referring to?

  • I had a pendo pad scanned this after around 1pm it came out to $149. Maybe i was a few hours early :(

  • Some stores in Vic are scanning @ $189 for both 8 and 10.1

    • Just checked coles in Flemington Vic and only had the 10.1 and it scanned in at $189 as well :(

    • Yeah there must be a few different barcodes.

  • does it have a gps?

  • +1

Where does it say it has an IPS display?

  • +1

Weird, went to South Melbourne Coles.
The guy said it was a terrible product and they are sending it all back to the manufacturer.
He said they had heaps left but would not sell me even one.
This was for the 8" version.
Didn't know about the 10" version until now.

    • For what it's worth, I've had what I presume is the "original" version of the 10" model for about a year now, and it's not skipped a beat.

    • Probably just wants to keep them for himself….

  • there are two versions in 10.1" one is with Google play scan at 189. and one is with 1mobile store scan for 49. there is only one difference and that is processor with google play processor is A9 with same cores and other one is A7 chip don't know what is the difference between these two chops both are 1.2 duel core though. bought one in Melbourne west and now trying to figure out how to install Google play.

  • Anyone bought the pendo pad 7? The price of 7 inch one is $39? When i ask about the price, was told it is $149. And the attendant said it was not on special. But haven't tried if the price will be marked down to $39 when check out. Can anyone confirm the price? Thx.

    • Sorry I haven't but it's the ones that cone in different colors (if that helps).
