There are a limited number of pies available for giveaways at each match.
The trial will run throughout the first three weeks of finals, but not at the AFL Grand Final.

    Just to keep in mind.

What about when they open the gates in the last qrter(they still do that?)
Free entry and potential free pie?

    • +2

do they do that for finals?

    • They dont do that for finals, and most of the food vendors close at 3/4 anyway.

  • How much do the pies normally cost?

    • +26

If you have to ask you can't afford one.

  • -1

MCG, your food prices over there are way to expensive. not paying nearly $6 for a pie. Glad your giving us a free pie.

    • +3

Glad your giving us a free pie.

As long as you don't mind paying $100 or more for a finals ticket. Yeah, it's free…

      • +2

Today I got elimination final tickets for $40.

        • +1

I got them for $10 (Go Hawks)

I love how it's called a meat pie. Basically it can be any kind of meat

    • +4

According to the Standard, meat flesh means:

‘The skeletal muscle of the carcass of any buffalo, camel, cattle, deer, goat, hare, pig, poultry, rabbit or sheep, slaughtered other than in a wild state (i.e. not bush meat), plus any attached animal rind, fat, connective tissue, nerve, blood and blood vessels’.

If a manufacturer adds offal such as tongue roots, liver, spleen or tripe they must declare it on the label. However, because most people don’t like offal in a meat pie the manufacturers very rarely use it.

But what makes up the rest of the pie? Well, most of the rest of the ingredients will be pastry, gravy and vegetable protein but, to ensure everyone knows what’s in your pie, FSANZ requires each pie to have the ingredients listed on the label, which might read something like:

Ingredients: flour, meat, margarine, thickener, vegetable protein, salt, spices, baking powder.

exactly, a meat pie. what meat do you think a meat pie should be?

      • +1

traditionally a meat pie is usually Lamb or Beef, sometimes a combo of both, but never every known domestic animal combined.

    • Meat pies in Australia are normally made with mutton.

    How about this idea

Just buy a couple of frozen ones from Coles and take them in with you
Then complain that the pies you bought were cold and you need replacements ;)

    • lol

I will be there with my purple gurnsey on.

    • no matter how many times you neg me Purple will still go strong!

oh good timing - free pies but only to the people who can afford going to finals. so much for the 'peoples game'.

    • +1

first week is pretty cheap… $40 for a finals ticket sounds not bad to me.

    • not even that - limited amount of free pies… it might be 1000 pies for the whole MCG.

      • +3

1,000 would be nice, but I think you're being VERY optimistic

  • +1

I had to re-read the article. For a second I was questioning why the pie sellers are planning on wearing bacon.

  • I remember the outrage in the media when the price of a pie reached $1 at the Sydney Opera House

    • +8

Its lucky ww2 broke out not long after to distract people.

  • +2

Thanks for this. I hope the pie sellers are in the MCC members area because I'm going on Saturday evening…

  • +3

You think the G is bad… I am currently at movie world and sauce is 70 cents…..

    • own fault

      • Didn't pay for it..

        • you sir are winning!

  • +2

Guess they are hoping you buy a $10 drink with that pie.

    • If they say that, I'll tell 'em "Get stuffed!" hahahha

  • The question is what kind of meat pie?

    • Not one at the "Crowval"!
      P.S Bigfooty

    I've just checked the T&Cs (http://www.mcg.org.au/~/media/Test2/MCG%20Beacon%20Pie%20Pro…)

Apparently, the 'year's supply' of pies is only 104 pies (valued at $217.36, or $2.09 each* - which highlights the mark-up on them at the ground). If you want more than 2 pies a week, you're out of luck…

Looking at the nutrition information, the level of saturated fat means that a few of these could make me chunky (if not beefy)…

  • Awesome! A free pie! I'll be at the North Vs Essendon game (Go ROOS!) and would love a free one. I go to a lot of North games but never pay for a pie. It's highway robbery! A free one though? WOOO!

  • Damm not at the Portress!
I'll be there with my Prison Bars on!

  • Luckily my team didnt make the finals so Im saving a fortune!

  • Anybody get their free pie?

    • Nope. Tried at half time after I couldn't find a vendor the entire first half and they said that the offer had finished

  • If you get a pie, don't have it with a Pepsi Max - Fan canned over Pepsi Max

  • I didn't get a free pie.
No one I heard from did
