      Done and added . Thanks

      nice find BTW.

        Wasn't really my find :P

I remembered it from another post when I used it. Had to do a bit of digging but credit really goes to IsometricBacon.

And to you for remembering and posting now.

    • I purchased my blue yeti mic from them and all went well.

    • yep, myphone from em came in a week

  • +2

    From PC magazine…

With regular usage, the 300mAh battery in the Gear Live only has about a day's worth of life in it.

The later model Gear2 has better battery life, up to 2 and a 1/2 days, but still not really there yet.

    • +3

Upgrade to tizen you will have a week

      • Question:

Is there a reason NOT to use Tizen on this Galaxy Gear? It provides much better battery life.

It will still connect to your Samsung which is running Android(?)…

    • With regular usage, the 300mAh battery in the Gear Live only has about a day's worth of life in it.

so does most phone when using data . Does that mean we stop buying phones

      • +5

No we stop buying coca cola!! :)

If you stop using data your phone can last a few days. So stop using data, and your phone will last longer than this watch.

A watch traditionally lasts months, so some may expect it to be a little longer.

AND I didnt say dont buy, I was just letting people know some detail about the watch.

        • -6

This is a smart phone, not a traditional watch. Why on Earth would you expect it to last for months?

        • +6

@Orpheus:He isn't saying it should last for months. He is saying it should last longer than a couple of days. I agree.

        • @kwidjibo: That's quite subjective. I would certainly love a smartwatch that lasts a week or three, but I don't see it as a watch, I see it as a smartphone accessory because it does way, way more than a simple watch.

Therefore I don't mind charging it every day - when I charge my phone at night, I just charge my watch.

    • +4

You can get the Full Android system out of the Gear 1.. and change it to Tizen.
Gear 2 you are stuck on Tizen..
Gear 1 has a slightly bigger battery anyway

    • I have the Gear2, depends how often you really use it. If you use it just as a watch you will get maybe 4 days out of it. But if you take it off and charge it with your phone like I do every night. Not really a problem.

  • +1

The Galaxy Gear is currently compatible with Galaxy Note 3 only, but would work with other Samsung/Galaxy devices such as the Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 once a software update becomes available from the manufacturer later this year.

  • +1

Seems match of what I need:
    1. I need notification flows to the watch, and able to answer directly to the watch.
    2. when I'm jogging I can stream music to my Bluetooth headset without need to carry my phone (I have big galaxy note)
This Bluetooth feature is. Possible with tizen o/s.

    Any comments??

edit: is yatango really part of cashreward.com.au? cant find it
    edit: no longer part of

    • +1

      1) Notifications can come up on the watch - but your interactions with it is rather limited unless you have an app for it or using the app natively on the watch itself (through unlocking full Android)
      2) you cant broadcast music from your phone to the watch directly (at least on Android). The watch isnt made for that purpose. Furthermore, I dont think you can stream music natively to anything but an A2DP (Stereo) source, and the watch is only Mono.

        1. saw on xda about null rom but battery isnt good i think i will go to tizen. so, i can only see like : 1 sms, 1 email but cant read content? or i can read content but cannot reply? i wish i can at least reply to the smses.
well, as long i can answer call and make directly from the watch, its good enough.

        2. yeah thats what i mean, save mp3 on the watch, and then play it to my bluetooth a2dp. i wont carry my note 2 while i do jogging. mono?? aww that would be sucks

        • +1

1 - The Null ROM has got a lot of capabilities that is customisable at install. This includes the unlocking of the CPU back to the original Dual Core 1.6 Ghz to unlocking the entire Android subsystem underneath to install anything you want on it (not just boring Gear apps). Obviously if you go overboard on this and max out the watch's capabilities, and use it to play Candy crush non stop, the battery will not last. If you leave it moderately, the NULL ROM will give you about 24 hours (which you can break up into two work days).
2 - You can take phone calls and reply to SMS's on the watch. The watch has a inbuilt mono loudspeaker and two mic's that is fairly good for a conversation through bluetooth. The SMS can you replied through the S-Voice (crap) recognition. When I say, limited in interactions is that it natively doesnt pull up a keyboard to do things or work with 3rd party apps.
3 - I thought you originally meant that you want to play music from the loudspeaker of the watch from your phone or from the internal memory. If you want to take the watch out for a run with a stereo A2DP headset, you need to get the NULL ROM to do this since the NULL ROM unlocks the BT stack and allows you to connect to other BT devices just like a normal Android device. Dont worry, that method does come out Stereo. But not sure about the battery life on that however.

        • +1

          @bchliu:

ah good to know someone in Sydney is expert with this gadget. hmm means when i get this i will play with stock rom for 1 day then root and install NULL to check the BT streaming capabilities. cheers~

        • +1

          @erwinsie:
Basically after the NULL rom is put on, it will pretty much turn it into a Galaxy S2 on your wrist (bar the connectivity). Its pretty good and you could spend hours on your watch's tiny screen poking away at games and apps.. :P

        • @bchliu:

haha i have Note 2 to play games but definitely interested in like run apps, music, and others that have benefit from "easy to reach"

        • +1

Bchilu is mistaken here. One of the features added with the update to the Tizen OS was the ability to stream music to a bluetooth device directly from the watch.

So yes, you can go out without your phone and listen to music via the watch alone.

        • @JarZ:

That's what I read too, tizen bring direct bluetooth streaming.

But bchilu seems to know alot I Wil try flash null first.

        • @JarZ: I'll be honest - I havent bothered to try Tizen since at the time, it was a one way process (now that's changed) with a good chance of bricking from the NULL ROM install (see XDA on that). Unlocked Gear with NULL basically gives me anything I want anyway from all the standard Apps. So Not exactly in a rush to do a one way conversion to Tizen. If this is a function out of Tizen, then good for you. :)

        • @erwinsie: Why screw around with buggy custom roms when stock tizen will do exactly what you want it to do?

        • @JarZ:

yes my main goal is to stream mp3 to my bluetooth headset while i jog without carrying bulky note 2. but i like tweaking etc so why not try null for few days. then i can decide…

  • Will this Galaxy gear still have the android os or would it be updated to Tizen already?

    • -1

They never officially made Tizen on the Gear 1. You need to download Tizen and flash yourself from XDA.

  • The new one looks totally awesome

    • so does the potential price tag of > $500 since everything is overpriced for Australians on release

      • Yeah stuff the price tag but it looks nice

Just ordered an Orange one, came down to 89.90 with the new membership+coupon. Thanks Easternculture!

If this watch was compatible with other manufacturers Android phones then I would have bought this in a heart beat just to see what it was all about.

    • Me too. Shame limited to just Samsung, I guess when LG and Motorola ones are out they'll have greater options.

      • +2

I had this Gear. I then switched back to my Pebble when I changed phones. I really miss the speakerphone feature - it was far more useful than I expected!

    • Yeah me too. Is there a hack to make it compatible?

      • Check xda I think there is

    • yeah i was quite disappointed about their closed ecosystem.

  • +1

Thanks op, late night shopping :)

  • Are these compatible with a galaxy s5?

  • Thats OP, just bought the Rose Gold one for my fiance.. as she doesnt want my Pebble when I trade up to a round smartwatch.

    • sorry but where did you see the rose gold, i only see green orange black etc

  • +1

Hi guys, owned this watch sine June. Null Roms are fine but battery life is horrible. In the end went with Tizen ROM, got multiple days out of it. Used it with a Moto G and got some functions going, here is the website explaining it, works with Gear 1, too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52030304
Also, find the Gear Manager APK to install the software on your non-Samung phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593066
Not all works, but notifications and photo and calls etc. work. Sweet little watch, but no Google Now. Newest firmwares here: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SM-V700
Attention: Once on Tizen, there is now way back, so Null Rom enough with it so you don't regret it. I never did.

    • i think now (recently discovered) we can go back to android from tizen?
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2776157

hmm from xda, seems like 50:50 between tizen and android followers :D

    • +1

Define multiple days with Tizen? Like 2 or 5? Or 100?

      • cant tell all depends on your usage of course but:

        http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-gear/396313-…

"…. terms of battery life, I've had the watch off the charger for exactly 24 hours and have 38% battery life remaining. All notifications have been coming through to the Gear. I've had it on ring and vibrate…"

        so yeah, not bad…

      • +1

2-4, depending if I had screen auto illumination on or off when lifting arm. I turned it off, otherwise it turns on all the time.

        • The lifting arm gesture on the Gear is definitely more sensitive than a lot of other things. I've also go the LG Smartwatch and its nowhere near as sensitive. Turning off this function will literally give you 50-80% more capacity on the battery. Just whether or not you find it irritating to use the power button to turn on and off, thats all.

    • Anyone know why there are different country firmware for the watch and what the differences are?

To save people having to hover over the codes:
      - BTU = United Kington
      - NZC = New Zealand
      - XSA = Australia

    • Does Null allow notifications to work on non-Samsung phones now? It couldn't the last time I tried, even with third-party notification apps.

Does it also auto-reconnect if a phone goes out of range, then back in range?

  • Honest question, what is the appeal of smart watches? I'm not being critical, I just don't understand why people buy them or the advantages they provide over a decent phone. Are there some must-have features that a phone simply can't match? I get that it's probably faster to check the time and weather, but is there anything else? Please enlighten me!

    • +1

It will appeal more to the "always connected" type of people. If you're not one who receives lots of emails, messages, or notifications, it might not appeal as much to you.

Notifications are the biggest reason for me. When my phone is halfway across the room and a phone call, email, SMS, or IM comes in, I can immediately tell if it's something urgent or something that can wait.

When I'm out and about with my phone in my pocket, I can miss calls or notification if it's noisy. The vibration on the watch takes care of that.

Another big thing is security. You can set your phone to require a PIN when the watch is out of range. That way you're never bothered by PINs, but if you leave your phone in the back of a taxi or get pickpocketed, the PIN will be active.

    • I agree with eug, it depends on the person.

I use my phone for work and personal. I get a lot of emails, phone calls, texts, as well as things like Facebook messages.

I also have a large phone (Samsung Note3) which is slightly more hassle to pull out of my pocket than a tiny little iphone.

      And I have a ~2.5 hour a day commute to/from work.

For me having a Pebble for the last year has been awesome. I can be at one end of our office, and my phone can be at my desk at the other end of the office, and yet I can still see emails/texts.

I can be sitting in a meeting, with my phone on silent in my pocket, and with a 1-second glance I can read a text message without having to dig my phone out and read it which may not be well received in a meeting/presentation.

Also while driving to work I can see incoming texts with a 1-second glance (not sure of the legality of this?). I cant reply while driving, but even if Im aware Ive received a text I dont have to touch my phone, which is often in my glovebox anyway streaming Pandora to my car head unit.

My Pebble battery lasts around 5 days, but if I forgot to wear it, or it goes flat part way through a day (rare, as latest firmware gives a 20% warning), then I feel "naked" not having my watch on me to see notifications.

So it does depend on the person, but me for one do not want to do without a Smartwatch. Explains why (as of this deal) I now own 3 of them…

      • Why does it go flat if you forget to wear it?

        • Err… it doesnt. If it goes flat part way through the day, OR if I forget to put it on in the morning (both rare), then Im a bit lost without it - I find myself checking my phone a lot more often to see if Ive missed anything.

        • @systmworks: Does it use more battery if it's not paired than when it is?

        • No idea sorry. I usually (sometimes I for get) turn my Pebble off at night time, so its only on for 15 hours a day or so, to extend the life. But for most of the time its on, its paired to my phone.

    • It's more discreet. If you're in a meeting you can leave your phone on silent, and if someone calls or texts you, you can check your watch to see what it is, which is more socially acceptable than pulling out your phone in a meeting.

But I want the audio player most of all. To be able to control the audio player from the watch.

  • I know they used to offer a 30 day free trial but I can't seem to find that anywhere on their site anymore…

    • apparently it has expired as per online chat team

  • thanks OP. grab one for my wife. hope it will work with her S5. finger crossed

Just brought one ! Even though i just brought a Galaxy Gear 2 recently. Now Im gonna have 2 Galaxy "Gears". Wonder if Im gonna get away with wearing 2 gears at the same time ? lol - if ppl asked why im wearing 2 watches im gonna tell them "it equally halves my collection so i can buy more" lol
hehe the real reason i brought the gear 1 is because I cannot run null rom on the gear 2 stuck with tizen

    • +1

cool can i ask questions later if i stuck with installing null rom?

      • +1

Of course you can ask me questions. Ill answer it best as i can from my exp. Gotta wait till my gear 1 arrives first. Ive rooted my gear 2 so far changed the watchface and notification ring tones thats about all you can do on a gear 2 from what i read. So eager to get the null rom working on the gear 1.
Just send me a pm :)

Looks like they just put the prices up!
Green has jumped from $109 to $149
Orange has gone from $99 to $109
Black has gone from $149 to $199

Lucky I ordered an orange one an hour ago before work - just before the prices went up. So I have orange and rose gold coming.

    • +1

Ironically the Rose Gold is now cheaper than it was before, and cheaper than Green/Orange. $99.95 = $85 after discounts - $10 less than I paid yesterday.

      • Same here, would they refund the diff?

        • Mmm very doubtful (unless they have an official policy - like Amazon for price changes before you receiver goods) - but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Not sure where that techspot promo code came from (its origin, not who posted it above), not sure if it was meant for anyone to use for just for a specific group/promotion etc.

        • you can cancel your order as long as it hasn't been shipped. Then reorder again using a new account (to get 500 points and use promo code)

  • I did ask through chat. They actually did it. Have already received the paypal confirmation. Pretty good service. wonder how long it will take to get it.

    • make sense. if you said you will cancel and re-order again because of $5 they will just give it to you - save a lot of headache and paperwork. too bad i dont like gold colours and orange now $5 more than what i paid.

    • Hah nice one - did you use the newbie code first, but can now have used the techspot one for $5 extra plus their price drop ? Or did you use techspot to begin with ?
Surprised if they let you change promo code as well as their own price drop.

      • I used the newbie code and tech spot code. After I purchased the y raised the price, now it's back to 99$.

    • Actually looks like they have canceled my order! Not good. Order status is closed which is not listed in their faqs.
