It's interesting in a wow my phone can do that. But like 3d in movies it gets old fast. So if you think of the $10 as paying that bit extra for watching a movie in 3d then you won't be disappointed.

Also it will get better as more software comes out that supports it. I busted it out a dinner party I had and everyone had a hoot wandering around in a villa in tuscany. This will keep you amused all of 10mins :D.

      • It made me feel sick - I had to get off the roller coaster so I didn't puke on other people on the ride (I was sitting up the front).

        • lol, same. however the twitchy fps players will probably have no problem with that.

    • +1

worth it for the small price to pay.
dont expect to get into any serious sessions, like a good game or movie would result in.
its still at the novelty stage, fun to play around with in short bursts.

also, do yourself a favour and use rubber bands or elastic to make it hands free. really adds another dimension to the fun not having to hold it.

    • It's cool beans. Worth a few bucks for some fun.

need one that fits a Note 3 :(

anything out there comparatively priced that will work?

    • Snap lol

  • I'd like to try this but Note 3 is too big darn it. It would be great as it has the same screen as the Oculous Rift.

Hi, dear customer, this DIY Google Cardboard is compatible with Samsung Galaxy Note 2, also with other iPhone, Samsung Phones etc thanks.

So you gotta assume it's compatible with the note 3 as there ain't much difference in size.

    • Is it posted?

I bought a gen 3 cardboard from the $11 local ebay stock from an earlier deal. Great quality kit for what it is, but, umm….yeah. So I mucked about for 10 minutes with a few demos and a few minutes of a side-by-side 3D Pacific Rim. and now I don't know if I would ever use it again. Regret not getting a $3-ish one, even if it's worse quality, as it'd pretty much be the same experience. and $3 for the experience would be worth it, just to see how it goes.

Fun idea, gets me excited for where VR is headed. But this current implementation just isn't a viable ongoing use product.

note: I was using it with a nexus 4. Might be better on a nexus 5 with the larger higher-res screen.

    • Much of the value in the one you purchased, is that it's local stock. And therefore not needing to wait a month for it.

But yeh you're right in that it's fun for a try, and not much more. It's a very good and cheap proof of concept product.

      • Yeah that was part of the reason, getting it quick (took about 4 business days I think). I'd also cancelled my $25 DODOcase one due to it taking forever, and seeming very overpriced once these Chinese ones has launched.

  • Ordered a couple, thanks!

Google cardboard is a lot of fun when you first get it. Worth a few dollars just to check it out :)
Works perfect with the Nexus 5.

  • Yeah it seemed when this was at $10 it could go a bit cheaper.

I think the time has come for me to finally find out what this Google Cardboard thingy is…

      watch SBS 3D movie?

  • +1

bought one just to try out, maybe i will stay interested for 10 minutes?

    • same here, hope i make it to 10.

i will most likely get over it in under a minute. Damn u oz-B, i can't resist a bargain

      • +1

What about watching Side by Side 3D movies on it? That will last for 90 mins.

        • Small viewable area, mostly in the centre of frame. Distortion at the edges. I would not try and sit through 90 minutes of that. Not to mention it has no head strap so you'll be holding up the whole time…

        • Possible in theory. What you would do is take the 3D side-by-side video file and play it on a conventional video player. If you were to use the SBS video player you could play a conventional movie (eg it would look like a big flat screen).

Things to note is that the design is targeted on a Nexus 5. The FoV of the lens etc. are targeted on a screen 4.7-5 inches in size, and the 1080p resolution is needed because you can definitely see the pixels.

Because there is no head tracking, and no lens correction, the picture will look to be 'curved' to your eye (not a problem, it's like those Samsung curved screens) but you would want to keep your head still so that the lack of movement didn't make you queasy. Lying back with it on your face seems indicated.

Not sure it would be my preferred movie watching experience, but it does work.

Finally too cheap to resist. Thanks OP.

  • Does this work for WP8?
As in, are there any apps/content that can utilise this gimmick?

    • Pretty sure it's an android only thing at this stage.

Jeez that's so cheap, I just bought 20. That's Xmas presents sorted.

  • any iphone cardboard?

  • Awesome. Now to wait for my $5 coupon…

I immediately regret my decision to purchase this when it was at $5.

I urge fellow ozbargainers to not fall for this deal because it will get even lower, close to $1.50 shipped.

    • when? I need more.

  • Bought one, thanks OP!

      • im assuming if I move the magnet down with my finger, that via nfc its meant to "select/run" the app.. no luck for me tho.. any ideas?

        • +1

I have to tape the inside magnet in place and then completely remove the other magnet and put it back to register a click.

        • Yeah it's meant to select or register as a click. I had no luck either, but I moved the magnet (inside) just below the normal position and it worked. It uses the phone's compass be able to detect the magnets moving.
