Sony SmartWatch 2 - Good Guys eBay ~ $131 Delivered (eBay Store)

130
CELEBRATE15

Sony SmartWatch 2 available from the Good Guys eBay store for ~$131 delivered. Good price for local stock and still a fairly good smart watch at about half the price of the new Android Wear watches. Sure it doesn't have all the whizbang new features but it delivers message notifications (email, Whatsapp, SMS), Facebook, has great battery life of 4 days and, in my opinion, looks better than the new SmartWatch 3.

Plus there's heaps of custom watchfaces available (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157445) for it and it's well supported in the developer community.

EDIT: My review of the watch, for those who are interested, is here: http://www.sony.com.au/product/sw2/reviews

  • I'm thinking about going for the Samsung gear live smartwatch, $174 delivered on the good guys eBay.

Newer model, runs android wear and looks better. Google play store has the same model listed at $250!

    • Great price. Got a link? Alternatively wait for the Moto360

      • I want 360 but it requires Android 4.3 and BT 4.0. I don't want to get a new phone just to use it, but I prefer that over this one. Decisions, decisions.

        I wouldn't buy the Moto360.

Yes its beautiful and appears functional.

        But a <1 day battery life…Seriously?

Who the hell is going to charge their watch every day. It will just become another annoyance to keep charging.

        • +1

Well most people have learnt to charge their phone every day at night so it's just another thing to throw on to charge. But I agree it's nice not to have to charge my SmartWatch 2 daily nor my Withings Pulse either.

        • @julz: at this rate it wont belong before you start looking like the Mr T of watches

        • True, but don't we hate charging our phones daily ( or often sooner ).

LG G Watch is another good alternative. Going for $169 (after 15% off) from a Korean eBay seller. These are the top 3 SW's currently out atm IMHO AFAIK until 'LG G Watch R'.

I like that the 360 has Qi charging. I'm holding out on buying a SW as I think they should be priced around $100 & have a battery life of at least 7days. Still too expensive atm.

      • +1

        I think that's a bit optimistic.

        • +2

Yeah maybe, but think about it, you can buy a half decent phone (or save towards a high end one) for the price of the watch all just to save you from something as simple as putting your hand in your pocket to quickly peek at your phone. I can see how useful it would be if you are someone that receives tons of email, sms, mms & chat msgs everyday.

Still seems pretty niche/gimmicky to me now. Maybe when the tech matures more they'd be worth the investment.

        • @grab_ur_freebies: If Apple is going to sell a watch for $500 AU because they can (it's $350 US, so add aussie tax and you get maybe $500), I somehow don't think an Android watch with 7 days battery life is going to sell for $100. Compared to a $500 Apple product, it will be perceived by the public as a piece of junk. Apple I guarantee will not drop the price of their watch anywhere close to $100, which means the Androids aren't going to go anywhere near that price point short of some crazy deal funded by ebay.

I think we are years away from this being possible. The Apple Watch itself is quite thick, and so is the Moto 360. It needs to be in order for it to have a semi decent battery life in spite of having underpowered hardware. The fact that Apple did not mention battery life of their watch leads me to believe it's going to be just as poor as the existing offerings (i.e. one day). To get it thin like a swiss watch and have the battery last a week, we're going to need some major revolutions in battery technology, which let's face it hasn't been happening.

As for the uses of a smart watch, I think it's to do with convenience (not needing to reach into your pocket/bag to get your phone) or discretion (in a place where doing so would be frowned upon, such as a meeting). For me, I want to be able to control my audio player without needing to reach for the phone and turn the screen on every time (I use the controls a lot because I listen to podcasts and audio books, not music).

@lostn: Apple's watch battery is only one day. 7 days is optimistic, but give it 9 to 12 months and it could be much closer. Technology, especially in batteries is getting better and better. They're now turning to graphite for electric vehicles. It's fascinating.

I'd be happy with $150 SW with moderate/heavy 3 days use.

      • Thanks. got this posted from Korean seller. Research / versus.com tells me can't be beat for ~$160, hope it tides me over <2016.
+ Check their shop for White one, pretty cool looking and not such a heavy colour.

  • Really tempted on getting this but not sure if it's worth it.

I'm in the same boat as you. For me the watch would be a temporary one to tide me over until the smart watches actually get decent. At the moment they're all slow and juice hungry, and also big and thick. I might buy this anyway, because I'm dumb. But if it was $100, it would be an impulse buy.

Smartwatch 2 is a 180MHz single core.. CPU
    Smartwatch 3 is a Quad ARM A7, 1.2 Ghz

It all comes down to the next gen app? what it will need.

Simple text and imaging software should run on a 200mhz fine.

  • If you connect via NFC, can you have bluetooth off?

    • No, NFC is used to automate the bluetooth pairing process only. Ie to save you from having to put the watch in pairing mode and use your phone to search for the watch and then enter in the PIN to pair the two devices.
