Not sure about the other features, but it'll definitely be a better gaming TV than the Samsung. Sony's are renowned for low input lag whilst Sammy's are know for the exact opposite.

    • +1

      This is true.

    • +6

Heh, someone negged me for producing a bona fide fact. Amazing.

        http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

Probably a non Sony owner took offense.

But you're right, Sony has 7 of the top 10 LCD or LED screens in that list in terms of the least input lag.

      • +1

To be fair you didn't actually show any references to prove it as a fact. You can't just claim fact without backing it up.

(I'm not the person who downvoted btw lol)

    • I concur

I have the sammys, LGs and Sonys at work. Sony always comes up on top for quality and longevity.

The only thing though is the IR remote is a bit low tech but I guess most people here are using a Harmony from all those ozbargains recently.

    • Can confirm. Been using Bravias for gaming for the last 7 years. :)

  • How does the Sony go in regards to playing movies etc from a NAS?
My current Samsung plays everything I throw at it, but is due for replacement.

  • I picked up the smaller model 42" KDL42W800B from the actual Sony store for $70. Been used mostly for gaming and its been a dream.

    A review of the series.

    • $70 or $700 !!

      • +3

Heh $750 even. My Bad. I'll go edit now…

        Aaaand I can't edit it..

        • I've heard it was extremely laggy to switch between HDMI inputs and also the UI is pretty slow, is this true? It's probably the one thing stopping me from buying this tv

        • @ohhidayo:
Most modern TVs seem particularly slow when switching things.

I guess it's still quicker than getting up off the couch and turning the rotary dial on my Rank Arena CRT

        • @ohhidayo:

It have to be really really laggy and you would have to be switching devices every 5 mins for it to be an issue I would have thought..

        • It hasn't been slow enough for me to take notice of it but I don't change inputs all too often. I'll check tonight. Having said that though I have one of Sony's 2013 models which we swap inputs on a lot more and that started off being really slow to change inputs and start up in general. However, I have noticed that the new firmware updates (which seem to come every couple of months) have made a drastic improvement. The whole UI is a lot snappier now and it starts up very quickly now.

        • @ohhidayo: You could use a HDMI switchbox. I got one from Jaycar and it works well.

  • Should i buy this, or an iPhone 6+… un-decided what i should spend my money on.

    • +21

You can't fit the TV in your back pocket.

EDIT: 6+ I see, never mind that won't fit in your pocket either. Sorry I can't help you then.

    • +1

      How are they even related?

    • +2

Sounds like you don't really want either …

    • +1

spend it on which ever gets the more votes on ozbargain!

    • -2

The iPhone 6+ isn't really $1200 is it? I mean we joke about apple fans being fanatical, but they're not that foolish, right? Right…?

      • +2

sad truth is that it really does that cost much :|

      • +2

oh yes they are. fanbois are as fanatical as ISIS. Who else would line up for 3 days+?

  • +4

Yes! Just bought this tv from the Good Guys a week ago for $100 more. Looks like im getting my price guarantee bonus! :)

    Thanks OP!

The software on the Sony is laggy. There is a big lag when you 1st turn them on and you cannot switch inputs for about 30 seconds.

The samsung software is much better.

I dont even bother with it after playing with it for a while. I have disabled the network altogether and now just use my htpc running openelec/mythtv

    • +2

The software was very slow initially but my 2013 model which has had regular firmware updates now operates very quickly. It was annoying in the early days but not enough to make me regret the purchase. Also if the screen is used for gaming there really is no comparison.

    • Yeah, my only gripe with this tv is the having to wait 30 odd seconds before you can do anything when it is first turned on.

There was a setting called "quick start up" that i found and turned on in hopes of fixing this problem but it did nothing that i can see.

  • The page has been taken down now?

    • Thats interesting, why they took it down? Technical or price error?
      Any insider information?

      • +2

Well, either way, 'unity' posted you can actually save another $7.00 by guying from TGG.

        • its the same price as UA556400AW.. but how does this Sony compare to Samsung UA556400AW?

        • @PPrem:
As I mentioned in my initial post compared to samsung 6400 side by side picture quality, design, built this TV was stand out but to be honest I would like to hear more from ozbargain community about technical specs of this tv compared to other tvs in the same price range.

        • +1

          @cisco:
That's usually due to them having the contrast turned up higher on the one they want to sell more units of. Oldest trick in the (JB) book.

Do yourself a favour, spend a few hounded dollars more, and go for ULTRA HD TV

    • Why?

      • Upscaling is amazing

        • +2

No deal!, IMO upscaling = virtual beer goggles (and in this case, very expensive beer-comparatively).

        • +1

          @RightplaceRontime:

I agree, just drink loads of beer before anytime you want to watch TV. Makes everything more impressive.

    • +3

At this stage, especially in Australia, 4K/Ultra HD is completely pointless. There is literally no 4K content, and there are no plans to have 4K content on FTA or PayTV. We still don't even have 1080p, so 4K is a long way off.

People buy their 4K TVs and then rave about how good everything looks on it without realising that it would look better on a smaller 1080p TV.

    • A decent 4K double or triple this price

  • +1

Not always a perfect substitute, depending on your needs, but if you want a big screen TV, always keep in mind you can buy a fantastic 3D 1080p projector and get a real home theatre experience for $300 less:

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/benq-w1070-fu…

    • -2

If you are buying a projector for $300 I can assure you it will not be close to the visual quality of this TV. Add colour saturation, throwback distance and image quality, life and you are then looking at around $1000+ mark for a decent projector.

      • +4

        $300 less.

        • +3

          Yep…I need my morning coffee… :|

  • umm, errr, this TV is only 100Hz. A 200Hz TV is usually some hundreds more and there is a reason for that.

    • All current sony models are 100HZ. Including 85x9500 at $20K

  • Question - Is this a 'discounted' or 'sale' price? or is this the new RRP ?
The JBHIFI site doesnt say 'save $xxx' etc. so does that mean it's the standard pricing from hence forth?

    • I just bought this tv from the Good Guys a week ago for $1348. The RRP is $1700 i think, there excuse for coming down that low was to "combat online sale prices stealing their business".

  • +1

Just got the Samsung 6400 on sunday, quite like it.
It was a toss up between that and the sony but I was told that the features on it far outweighed the Sony.
Also got the Samsung soundbar and sub with the discount so ended up getting it for about $150. jb have it listed at $890 or something like that, cheapest i'd found was good guys at about $545.

    • @timthetoolman

Hey buddy can you please share/send the reciept? I would like to try my luck.
      Cheers

  • I have 55" 800A from last year. It is great tv. At this price it's a steal.

To clarify TV lag for gaming, there are conflicting demands on a TV.

A TV's gaming mode can minimise lag, but as per CNET, "A TV's Game mode might improve your gaming experience, but it will definitely decrease your picture quality". A TV will need to store and analyse at least one frame before it can display it - at 50Hz that is at least an additional 20ms lag. Support for higher frame rates would be good.

Conversely, for program material, a TV's picture may be made to look better than the transmitted content because frames are only updated at 50Hz, can be blurred etc. It is amazing how the image processing can enhance the viewing quality but it needs to receive several frames in advance an then use algorithms to interpolate and produce intermediate frames to produce a higher rate such as 200Hz. It can also use several images to sharpen images, upscale to HD, reduce noise etc.

So you want a good picture choose a TV with good processing that can do motion interpolation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation. An explanation of Sony's Motionflow is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd7Tj_3GLMY . But this is not the mode for fast gaming.

  • just bought this TV.. managed to get it down to 1100 at jb. great buy!

  • Also bought this at JB. They have an extra 10% off today (or this weekend, not sure). Got this down to $1154 (then will claim $49 from easyreabates.com.au). The picture is good, but the sound is average - otherwise has good features. Pretty happy with this purchase.

    • Hey mate can you please elaborate a bit on average sound and good features. I was almost about to buy it till I read your comments.
Been tossing between this one samsung 6400 and lg 55lb6500

I like the image quality of sony but smarts and remote control of lg and Samsung.

      Thanks in advance.

  • Darn got this for 1200 at harvey norman today and i thought i had good deal should have checked this thread first

  • So those of you who bought it…how's the 3D performance?

    • I haven't tried yet - not really that much of a fan of 3D. But if you come back to me in a week, I'll try something out.

  • This TV is $1130 at Good Guys now, $1133 at Bing Lee.
