Any offer on a set of dash cam & reverse cam?

  • +8

I purchased this from foxoffer on ebay for a Similar price ($70.03au) a few weeks ago and it is a great dash camera.
It is so tiny, the photos don't do it justice.
Rep, you should do a deal with a 32gb microSd card included. I'm sure you can do a little better as you don't have ebay fees.
I'm tempted to get another one but just need a slightly bigger carrot dangled.

  • +2

Rep, you must have seen the banggood deal. No deal for mobius or the other cheap cam with the capacitator?

    • My bad, capacitor.
I'd still rather a product with raving reviews than this.

      • +3

I'd pay good money for a cam with an in-capacitator! ;)

    • +1

Banggood!? Mate! you know the best way for retailers to stop you from returning faulty items is not rejecting your claim, but drag till you are exhausted. My experience with Banggood; I bought a led strip light with remote control. Not working, open a case, it's customer service requested me to make a video proofing not working. After seeing my video, he asked me to change a new battery then make another video. Then, tell you can't view your video, can you please redo?? or you go to our "home" to open another case.

Mind you, video with more than 25 MB can't be emailed. Anyway, it's not an expensive stuff, but trustworthiness. Banggood, OZbargainers, my advice is "forget it". Go with eBay. eBay has a resolution centre, not this kind international websites who have no idea about customer service or consumer's right.

  • Purchased.
I have been looking for capacitor based cams instead of battery one but almost all come with battery.

For the last 3 years I have been using BlackVue DR400G-HD and haven't had any problem in Canberra summer so went with battery again.

I am glad I didn't place order at lunch time today from ebay. It was coming up around $90 shipped to Australia

    • Do you mean a capacitor to power the unit? If so, you can give up looking now.

Even the latest supercapacitors have LESS than 1% of the energy storage of a same-size rechargeable lithium battery, and are MUCH more expensive than a lithium battery. Ultracapacitors are no different, they are just a different name for marketing reasons. The more-correct term for both is "Electric double-layer capacitors".

The best analogy for WHY capacitors will never match batteries is this: Imagine you have a bucket full of petrol. Imagine how much energy you can generate by lifting it up by two metres, and using string and pulleys to harness the energy produced as it descends. Now imagine how much MORE energy you could produce by setting the petrol on fire, perhaps to power a steam engine or internal combustion engine.

It's not a perfect analogy, but it does accurately illustrate the difference in power outputs. Anyone who claims they have a dashcam that is powered by a capacitor is either lying or seriously mistaken. Lithium batteries and supercaps often do look similar, but that's the only similarity.

        capacitor is a battery

        :S

      • +2

The point of the capacitor is to handle high heat environments, it only needs to provide charge long enough to finish writing to the SD card and shut down when the car's 12V AUX is shut off when you park the car.

        • -1

Agreed, a capacitor could provide a few seconds, maybe up to a minute, to correctly close the SD card's filesystem.

How is this related to high heat environments? You need to close the SD card's filesystem in sub-zero temperatures too.

Adding a capacitor to a circuit does not improve its ability to handle heat. If you want high-temperature operation, you choose industrial temperature (-40 to +85 degrees C) or automotive temperature (-40 to +125 degrees C) graded components for ALL of the components. Normal "commercial" temperature spec is 0 to +70.

        • +2

@Russ: You are still no getting it. The point of the Capacitor over battery is that the battery itself doesn't handle high heat very well. It only needs to run for a few seconds so it does the job. Cars can get very hot inside during Summer.

        • @The Land of Smeg: i've run the dvr027 dashcam since 2013 and it has survived the perth summers very well. runs off a nokia bl-5c which means i can have the dashcam running while i'm parked to capture any damage from errant trolleys, moron skater kids trying to flip my car etc.

        • +1

          @tdw:
could you please elaborate on running the dash cam while the car is off? Very interested!

        • @tomkun01: This! And if it runs off the nokia bl-5c does that mean that the dash cam doesn't need to be hardwired to the car battery like most parking mode dash cams do?

        • +2

          @tomkun01:
          @AnDyStYLe:

basically, this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130857296313 plus a genuine nokia bl-5c: http://www.mobileciti.com.au/nokia-battery-bl-5c (bl-6c, while providing more runtime, won't fit)
with a fresh battery, i'm getting about 3 hours runtime while parked. even with the old bl-4cs my office was about to ditch, i can get 2-2.5 hours.

video quality is nowhere near something like a blackvue, which is my ideal camera to get hardwired to the car battery or a portable lithium powerpack i can charge at home.

      • +1

No, I didn't mean to power the unit with capacitor. just enough power to shutdown the cam properly after i turn ignition off.

I was also worried about exploding batteries in hot car

    • My G1W-C came in the mail today. Haven't installed it yet, but it's got some favourable reviews and cost me around $55 with the 15% off ebay deal.

      • +1

I got one of these a few months back, cost me ~$USD70.

Very happy with it - went for the capacitor due to the high internal temps the vehicle would be subject to and this is very bad for lithium batteries - with alleged reported cases of some people having fires started in their vehicles because of them.

Dunno about that BUT extreme heats - and an Australian summer WILL cause extreme heat in your locked vehicle - will definitely cause the battery to have much reduced lifespan.

Capacitor model works very well - though often needs to manually be restarted by pushing power button as it turns itself off as you turn car key from 'power to all components' to 'ignition'. A tad annoying but not a big deal.

        • My version came with the standard suction cup and a rear-view mirror clamp - which do you use? I've heard the only complaints came from the mount vibrating, which is usually fixed by a bit of tape. Is yours stable whilst driving?

        • Capacitor model - any link?

        • +1

          @adamchan:

Doing some free advertising for the store rep lol, but you can find it on gearbest: http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_67201.html

Also on ebay and other websites if you want to shop around for a cheaper price. Just make sure it is the G1W-C model.

        • +2

          @paizuri5:
Use coupon GBG1W to make it USD $41.99 inc shipping.

    • which one should i get this or Blackvue? I know Blackvue is way more expensive, but is it reliable and how is the picture quality?

      • From video samples I saw there is not much difference in video quality between Blackvue and this camera or G1W. Blackvue has nice form factor. It has gps and mobile apps. Blackvue also feels quality product when compared to these cameras.

G1W and this are almost same. I think they both use same processor and sensor.

I only had problem with Blackvue 2-3 times when it rebooted while I was driving and complained about bad sd card. I reformatted card with sd formatter utility and it worked fine.

IMO this camera has more value for money than blackvue on paper.

lets see how it perform in real life.

    • +1

May be you can try solder it yourself.
Some guy did it on youtube, below is the demonstration.
Working fine with self install capacitor.
      http://youtu.be/bpkcTVXngEc?list=UUbigDarFa_p3XCJuIMxnLVA
      http://youtu.be/7Vryq7HaxrA?list=UUbigDarFa_p3XCJuIMxnLVA

  • Any info on how (optional) GPS function integrates?

    e.g. Speed display on video?

  • Gets a good write up on Dashcamtalk, but a small number of owners complain of a blurry picture when it heats up.

    • Sounds like moisture on the lens

  • I bought the same one before this post, just hope it's not the same unbranded shit.

  • Purchased from ebay with shipping from Melbourne. Couple dollars cheaper as well.

Don't forget a SD card may not be included so just keep an eye out for that.

  • +1

Note the code seems to INCREASE the price of other items if you add other things to the cart along with the car cam.

  • Can someone please tell me how the motion detection work? is this like a security feature when your car is parked, it looks for any moment even when your car is completely turned off?

    • I think it records only when something is moving rather than record all the time, saves battery and storage. The device works on battery so it works even when engine is turned off until battery runs flat.

      • Thanks felixco, your explanation makes sense if the kit is hardwired to the car battery. If the unit is just going to be using 12v sockets then in most cars as soon as the key is removed from the ignition everything shuts down. I guess this is where the built in battery/capacitor comes in but my question is, does this means the unit is always on when motion detection is turned on…

        • +3

On the models that I have - When the car is at traffic light, the camera is turned off with the motion detection on. When the car starts moving, it starts recording again. I don't like that sometimes, as the juicy part often happens in the intersection.

  • So, what's the deal with legality (re: privacy act) of these things?

I must confess that I haven't looked into them, and they do seem like a good idea, but if the evidence is inadmissible for any serious legal purposes it might be pointless.

I actually have to participate in the bogan grand prix (read: home visits) today, it would be nice to have video evidence of the utter weirdness that is driving nowadays! ;)

    • Picture tells a thousand word.

Bought two from Gearbest few months ago.
      Already being potentially useful twice.
One video was shown to police of an unprovoked raged driver.
Another time was for a car accident. Unfortunately the camera was playing up and no footage at the time.

It is hard to get a good model if you don't know. Tried about half a dozen different models- some melted under the sun, some fuzzy image, some with SD card toasted every few weeks, some suction keep falling off.

      • Cheers for that.

So, just out of interest, what was the cop's response…was it along the lines of "yes we can use that, give us a copy" or "oh yeah, that's nice, ho-hum?"

        • The cop on duty in police station was very polite. His advice was that I will have to appear in court as witness if they file a formal report or he will give the person a call and provide a verbal warning. The latter was my decision as no injury or damage.

  • One question, for the capacitor car cam, as that is no battery inside, does it record the date and time on the video? If no, how do you search for video on the micro sd card when there is no date and time? Just by the filename?

    • Most of the cam will have a small battery(like a button cell or something else) to keep those memory running inside the cam.
Similar to those graphic calculators that we used back in high school, so even if we run out of batteries, all memories inside the calculator will still be there because there is a small separate battery to keep those memories temporarily safe inside your calculator.

  • Hey Rep,

It looks like the code doesnt work properly when I order two units, as the discount doesn't double.

My order number is WW1409241759318662 - can you please look into it?

    Thanks.

    • I think there's a note after you put in the code that says single unit only

    • Please try again, it is ok and no limit.

  • Was just looking at Navig8r FHD Wide yesterday. Hopefully this one is better

  • Rep,
I already have Navman one installed in front with concealed wiring. Can you please confirm if it uses MicroUSB cable to charge? If that is the case I can use it with the same wire.

    • Looks to be MiniUSB.

      • Thanks. Saw that earlier in the picture as well :( Might be able to use a mini to micro usb cable.
I don't like my Navman taking space on the windscreen and want something small to hide. Not sure how this one is fixed.

    • Hi Gggy,

This A118 dash cam can be charged with Micro USB cable. Any other question please PM Csgearbest, we will more than happy to solve all the your problems.
      Thanks for visiting Gearbest.com

  • How does this mount? It looks like you need to use double sided tape to semi-permanently fix it to the windscreen? No suction mount? I like to remove the camera when parked as it becomes thief bait.

Also, the sample video only shows daytime footage, can any owners of this actual unit attest to its night-time capture?

  • +1

What's the quality like for evening/night use on one of these units?

  • Hi Rep,
Can't seem to apply the code, when I click apply it asks me to login and so I created an account and login then when I click apply it asks to login…..

  • Has anyone heard of Mini 0803 dashcam?
If not, you better google it because it's got some good reviews.

I bought one and the video quality is awesome (Full HD).

The price was around 115AUD around 2 months ago from ebay.

    • I was told there are many fakes and clones of this model on eBay. Do you have a link for the cheapest genuine unit?

      • No, I don't have to be honest.
The video reviews I watched before buying it were showing a "E-Prance" logo white print on the cam, while mine doesn't have that.
Probably the chances of having bought a non genuine one are high, but I'm still happy with it.
Even at night the video is good, although looks a bit more grainy than the videos seen on youtube.

        • If I purchase it locally, will it reduce the chances of getting a fake one? Or did you purchase yours locally too?

        • As I said, I got it from ebay.
If you buy it locally you may still get the fake ones, depends who sells it to you.
I have to mention there is a small bug if I can say so…the cam freezes if the connection between the pins is not good enough, it happened to me 3 times so far. What you do is you let the battery drain (20 mins) then you are good. This is a known bug.

  • Anyone received shipping / tracking confirmation email?

    @Rep, Already shipping out or?

    Thx

    • Hi LHSolutions,
You order has been packaged and is ready to ship now. Here we get too many orders to deal with, and we will ship your order out within 1~3 business days.Hope you can understand that.
      Thanks for shopping on GearBest.com!

      • I made my order and payment in the early hours of Friday morning (26/09/2014). Can you please confirm if this has been dispatched yet as I'm still only seeing "Processing" as the order status?

  • So does Ozbargain like Banggood again? I could've sworn not all that long ago there was a tread about them not delivering stuff.

  • A tip for powering these things. I grabbed a spare ciggie power adaptor, took the guts out of it and wired it to the overhead map light console to power my camera.

Much neater than running the standard power lead around the windscreen and leaves the 12v socket free for other things.

    • How do you overcome the problem of it running the battery flat? The overhead map light could have constant power?

    • So do you need to have the overhead map light on all the time to power the device or do you forgo the function of having a map light?

    • Oops and apologies. It's actually fed from the hot side of the sunroof switch in the map light console so only operates when IGN is on.

      Very sorry for the confusion.

  • +2

I ran the cable into glovebox which has a USB port. Can't see the cable at all.

  • +2

I considered grabbing one of these most of the day but will hold off for now for a few reasons:

    1. Even at 1080p you still can't make out the number plates on cars unless they are almost right in front of you. This makes my current $30 carcam almost as effective. Similarly there is no way of reading number plates coming the other way. However, even at low res you can demonstrate in an accident if you aren't at fault when it becomes arguable.
    2. Most people have mounted these so high that the windscreen wipers don't reach, and rain/water drops easily block the view (though yes, you could mount it lower)
    3. In the next year or so we will start to see 'smart' carcams that use the sort of number plate recognition technology that police cams use, ie they will locate, zoom and perhaps interpret number plate characters.

So, while this is a fair price for an OK carcam, I will keep my dollars for the future.

If I REALLY want high res car recording I may mount my phone to the windscreen and record while using it as a navigation device. Makes sense, while I save my cents.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=car+cam+software+for+phone

    • +1

if i see something retarded happen and i know ive caught it on my dash cam i read the number plate out so the mic gets it too

    • I somehow agree with giggles. I intended to get a decent dashcam but what's the point when you buy a dashcam but can't read the plate. I know someone will say why don't read out loud the plate, but sometimes it would happen so fast and in unexpected way that you can't even know what happen, in that case, you may forget to read out loud anything. In addition to this, this is the era of smart devices so maybe I wait for something 'smarter', or at least will use smartphone as dashcam

      • +5

In future you'll be able to hold the button down on your phone and ask

"Hey ASIO, who hit my car?"

        • lol another NSA?

      • Mayday,mayday…oh$&@# I'm dead!

  • I plan to buy one and buy more if I like it, would this price be still available?

  • Anyone received their order?

    • I sent a "support ticket" to them querying my order as it was sitting on processing for more than 1~3 business days. I finally received a reply on Saturday, as well as my Order Status updating to Shipped out with a tracking number. Strangely though, the postal company is Netherlands Post Registered?

    • "10-10-2014 06:45 The item is at the PostNL sorting center
      30-09-2014 12:29 The item is pre-advised

A signature is required upon delivery of this item."

So "pre-advised" means that a tracking number was assigned to my order but the order had not been picked up or sent by the courier…

If lucky it will be delivered by the end of this month but not hopeful at all more like start of november :(

  • i ordered on the 26th and it has not been shipped yet

      Hi anthonyzzz,
We are very sorry for not shipping your order out yet. Please accept our apologies for the delay.

    • When did you order it?

  • Mines still at the sorting centre, ordered 29th; not sure why mine couldn't be on its way as well though seeing as both mine and Stevo's orders would have been at the sorting centre together at some point… seems these were only "posted" on the 7th of October (or is that 13th)?
