ISSUE OP has described the batteries as rechargeable, but an OzBargain member (thanks BamZero) has noted the FAQ for the product, says it is NOT rechargeable

  How many times can you 'recharge' this?

  Isn't this simply an almost DIY electrochemical cell you make in highschool labs. Using lemon and nails?

    Can you keep re-filling Aquacell batteries ?
    No. Aquacell batteries are activated when you add water. Once they have expired, they can be recycled, but not recharged.
