Back in my old work place there is one guy who swore by it. I think people use it instead of mouse for ergonomic reason — less arm movement, no awkward wrist position, less likely with RSI etc.

I use this at work and it's hilarious when people move it like a mouse. Best investment ever

yup, i got a lot of pain from using a mouse, been using one for a lot of years and i have wrist issues. love my trackball ive had for a couple of years now.

i think it took me almost 3 months before i stopped just randomly move my trackball over the desk wondering why the fek the pointer on the screen wasnt moving…..

          edit:

          No, I don't need one.

hand in your OzB membership stat, when was need ever a qualifying reason to buy something on OzB?

  • Shows USD40 for me including shipping to SA. How do you get it for $37?

    • maybe shipping rate is different to SA ?

  • back in 2012 this was $56 in Umart. only ever had to clean the dust and stuff once.

These are great if you have to use the computer a lot. Bought one then bought another one to keep at home :P

Here's a tip though: the price fluctuates a lot between $29.99 and $34 or something. If you pick it up at $34 you can ask for a refund when it drops back down to 29.99 which it will. I think Amazon has some automated stuff that lifts the price when the item is popular and drops it down later.

    • If you pick it up at $34 you can ask for a refund when it drops back down to 29.99

Only within a week, I believe.

    • It is US$29.99 now, the US$37 price is including delivery.

Looks like an old persons foot. No thanks.

I've been eyeing this for a while. Just don't know if it's actually useful to me.

At home, my pc setup includes 2 27" 2560*1440 monitors(win 8.1 pro). Just general web browsing, some photo editing & audio editing, occasional Office works, etc. I don't play games very often(I reckon I can switch back to traditional mouse when playing games).

At work, a Dell laptop & Lenovo desktop(both win 7), a lot of data to crunch plus emails to process.

Really want to hear from people who have some experiences if I would be better off using this trackball instead standard mouse?

    Much appreciated!

    • mate who switched me to a trackball does loads of web design and stuff. he uses his TB for "normal" stuff but then switches back to a mouse just for gaming. hes only young so dosnt have the joint issues i do from decades of mouse use. i wanted something different because decades of mouse use and joint issues made it quite painful to use a mouse. since getting my TB i use it for everything including games.

it does take some time to get used to a TB, plan on it feeling REALLY strange for a couple of months but once you get used to it its far better than a mouse imo

edit: and if you search for the previous TB deals you will see that most (all?) TB users have about the same opinion of them

      • Thanks! Will give it a try!

I picked up this trackball mouse last time it was advertised on ozbargain, about 2 months ago I think. I am a programmer and suffered from wrist pain, not to mention gamed when I got home. So decided to give it a go at work. First 2 weeks it was difficult to feel comfortable using it and quickly do things you would with a mouse (e.g move to a second monitor and precisely click a small close button). After the two weeks it was natural movement, my hand had gotten use to it and eventually my wrist pain had gone. Space saver as well, could have my notes and things surrounding my mouse. I still have my old mouse attached for colleagues, and the times I have tried it out of curiousity, it feels slow and uncomfortable to use for work. Definitely give it a go :)

Really need to stop coming here when I have no money.

I use a Logitech Wireless Trackpad T650 —> This is $38 at MSY now.

You could possibly price match it at Officeworks, if they have it in stock.

Trackpad is quite ergonomic too. All you move is your fingers.

    • +1

I have both this trackpad and the trackball, and I prefer the trackpad for general web browsing. The trackball is nice but only good for one hand, I like swapping and a trackpad allows that.

Both have their uses but a mouse is still needed for gaming.

    • +2

The T650 is $35 with free shipping at Logitechshop.

  • I can see all the benefits in this but isn't it really hard to control the ball? For example in to get it on an exact small button without fumbling around for a few seconds? Hopefully someone who has this can explain the ease of it

That is what I experienced with my old thumb-controlled Logitech trackball - once I've positioned the cursor, the act of clicking moves it. Lots of people like it though, so I must have just been using it wrong!

I've been wanting to try the Kensington Orbit for a while. Instead of using your thumb, you use your middle fingers. It also comes with a scroll ring. It seems like it could be more accurate. It's the area below my thumb that hurts when I use a normal mouse for a long time too, so I would imagine using a thumb-controlled trackball wouldn't help me much.

      • I agree. I've been using this for about 2 months now and although I'm getting used to it, it is very difficult to higlight or block a section of text.

Usual Friday night thing. Nursing a week of "mouse strain" over a glass of OzB -purchased red wine, came across this offer & jumped on it.
Will be full of regrets in the morning & wondering if I have signed up to a future of "thumb strain"

  • These are great for controlling a media centre or PC from the lounge or somewhere else not flat for a regular mouse.

i have even smaller hand than this amazon review,so using mouse will be fine? i thought since the mouse is big it will suit bigger hand people…

"However, not all is well. I have normal sized hands - not NBA center, not Arsenio Hall - just 8" from wrist to tip of middle finger. If I rest my palm on the bottom-third on the device, my middle finger and thumb each reach about 1" past the button and trackball (respectively). Because of this, I instinctively rest my palm on the desk - this puts my fingers and thumb in the right position. It works great - but now I'm experiencing similar pain because my hand is bent up, with the nerves on my wrist being the pivot point on the desk. I'm experiencing similar pain - just attenuated because my wrist no longer has to roam the desk (normal mouse).
So, now I've been training myself to keep my palm on the device. To do this, my fingers have to curl up like a bird's talon, which also causes strain.
Bottom line: great device for smaller hands, only gets 3 stars for normal sized hands (and up). This Logitech model was clearly designed for shorter people."

    • hmm i want to use this in office but if i have normal mouse at home than it will be hard when switching between work at home and office.

  • Is this a bluetooth mouse or wireless only (with a usb dongle)?

    • @tims

Is this a bluetooth mouse or wireless only (with a usb dongle)?

      Lock in wireless :)

using -Logitech® Unifying receiver—the tiny, wireless receiver that stays in your laptop/PC and lets you add compatible devices as you need them.

  • OK, thanks. I'm looking for a mouse to use with my tablet.

  • How is it to use the side/top buttons? I currently have a mouse w/back-forward & use it continuously.

Do you click the ones on this with the thumb or the finger??

    Ta!

    • +1

I use my index finger to click the forward/back buttons, my thumb stays on the trackball all the time. It's pretty comfortable.

    Lets face it. Its UGLY

  • I use one at work as a space saving device as just no room to move a mouse normally. Control room environment.
Good for slow precise movements, no good for gaming.

  • Has anyone tried playing FPS with the trackball? out of curosity haha
