If you hire a car for a few days you could see some of the California countryside, which I find more interesting than major cities. I love a US road trip - the fuel is cheap, the country is interesting, and you get to interact with random people wherever you stop, though I usually go in summer when the weather is warmer.

Due to the winter, you can't guarantee seeing Sequoia National Forest - it's very weather dependent at that time of year, and only the lower elevation roads are open. However, you could easily do a loop around LA over 3-5 days, sightseeing in a few random places including:

You could take in San Diego and Santa Monica as well, depending on how much you want to drive, and how much you'd prefer to hang out with the crowds on Hollywood Blvd.

Public transport is quite cheap, and the subway is handy, but I recommend a car in LA if you want to go shopping if you're staying downtown because the major shopping centres are nowhere near the Chinese Theatre.

If you are under 40 you could try a top deck trip, they do a few different tours around California, Nevada, Arizona. More upmarket than Contiki but not for older people like Trafalgar etc.

Thanks OP, allows me to get $1600 return flights for Jan-June 2015 study abroad. Much cheaper than the $2300-2600 with Virgin and Qantas

Missed out on the cheapest $758 airfares from Brisbane but still got it at an awesome price of $863.70 all up including card payment fee. Thanks OP!

Thanks for this awesome deal OP. Is there a promo end date?

    • +1

      October 3.

    • +1

      yes oct 3

      • Lost my passport a couple of months ago, going to have to pay the priority processing fee just to get onto this deal. Any idea on the most effective method to travel interstate? (I.E. LA-> ORLANDO, ORLANDO->NY, NY->SAN FRAN etc)

        • +1

Flying. Those are pretty big distances.

I've driven from Atlanta-NY a few times split over 2 days. You could definitely stop at places on the way like DC and South Carolina if you wanted to spend a little longer.

        • Any budget airlines that you'd recommend?

        • +2

@gotrice: Southwest … for both flights and sauce

        • @muncan:

Just search through the airfare sites. Last time I checked Southwest was only available when using the Kayak US site rather than Kayak Aus.

        • @neil: I skip the flight search engines and search manually, as these tend not to pick up the special offers airlines run (the only ones I book). Googling "flights from A to B" usually gives you the list of airlines that do the direct flights.

  • Booked. Had to start all over again and choose different seats because POLi is a pain. Sigh… What OzBargainers put up with to save a few bucks. It didn't even give me ING Direct as an option, I had to select another bank and then change to ING on the POLi screen, and I also had to allow 3rd party cookies for it to go through the second time.

I don't know why Airlines can't just accept a payment receipt as a remittance advice (like a normal company), or let you use a credit card as a refundable deposit while the direct deposit goes through and then reverse the credit card charge.

    • Should be able to pay at check in with paywave 5% off :(

      • I paid via Poli to avoid the $30 cc fee. 700 or so QF points isnt worth $30

        • +2

If your cc provide complimentary travel & medical insurance, $30 is very cheap IMHO

        • @widzz:
They do as long as I book $250 of either airfare or Hotel expense with them. I payed the Hotel with it ;)

        • good idea.. however CBA Diamond cc requires $1k or more of travel expenses to be eligible for the insurance :(

        • @widzz:
          I used ANZ black

        • @widzz:

Yup, that's what I did. $30 for travel and medical insurance is real cheap when it's included in your credit card. Westpac black!

        • @cheapies:

Yup, that's what I did. $30 for travel and medical insurance is real cheap when it's included in your credit card. Westpac black!

Bankwest platinum for mine.. wanted to use the new citibank platinum but as they keep offering me interest free $ its kind of unusable for regular use ;)

  • Damn good deal.

  • CHEERS!

    Tickets booked 5/12/2014 till 21/2/2015

    $742 from Melbourne!

    • thats a short trip ;)

Thanks OP! booked for Feb 2015 holiday from Melbourne..

  • All prices from Sydney have risen 200 pretty much across the board.

    • Just checked the same flights I booked yesterday for $742 ex Mel and they're now $893.82. Still a great price but over $100 more expensive.

      • flights i booked yesterday have gone from $2300 for 2 adult/1 kid to ~$3800 for the same

Bloody hell everything went above $1000 now, I was up at 6am looking at the $800-900 tickets. You need to pounce without thinking when it comes to Ozbargain!

  • yeah its pretty hard to just impulse buy these tickets..

    • ….yet so many of us do!!! I always impulse buy and then deal with the consequenses later (ie booking time off work) luckily they are flexible and understand!!

      • From now on I'm a Puma, when I see a good deal I pounce! rawr!

Hey umm is $1086 ($30 booking fee included) still considered to be a good deal? I consider $1000 to be the point where I don't hesitate on buying now.

  • Why do OzBargainers suggest for currency & travel insurance?

    • +1

Citibank Plus Visa debit allows you to withdraw from overseas ATMs with a pretty good exchange rate and no fees (unless levied by the bank who owns the ATM).

Lots of credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance but the Bankwest Zero Platinum is good because it also offers no fees on overseas purchases.

I use a combination of both.

    • Currency:
standard answers are always Citibank Plus for cash withdrawals and CC's like 28degrees or Bankwest Zero Platinum for best exchange rates
(though in saying that I'm contemplating locking some $ away at current rates to hedge my bets against forex movements between now and Feb, even with the exchange penalty for getting cash or forex cards)
      Travel Insurance:
CC's like the Bankwest Zero Platinum, Citibank Platinum etc etc all come with pretty decent travel insurance for 'most' travels.

  • Does the price displayed on the search calender already have the 300 off discount applied to it? Can't find anything under 1k… :/

    • jdogg you came abit late to the party…these super cheap fares are all usually snapped up in the first 12 hours

      • I'm always late to the party haha…

        • +1

I must say I was keeping an eye on these special and 24 hours into the sale their still was super cheap fares available, but they didnt that much longer either. I was lucky I stumbled across them right as the sale was about to start. Naturally I bought mine, then posted the good news here!

@MelbBargainChaser77: When opportunity arrives, help yourself before helping others :-P

  • Hmmm I need a package that would cost about $1800 to have posted. This is tempting as the manufacturer is in LA. But I would prefer to not have to hang around for days. It means I would spend more than my savings doing cool stuff in LA.

Well what do you expect for such a large shipment of drugs.
