Also note..this is not a direct flight. It is Melbourne to Auckland, then Auckland - Los Angeles. It is though on a comfy 777.

    • -1

777 is not that great in economy as the engines are very noisy (if you look at the size of them, you'll know why), at least compared to a A380 which is super quiet.

      • +1

Well I didnt have a noise issue flying the 777 this year, and I didnt notice it to be any worse than when I flew the A380. Also qantas on the A380 is almost double the price for the same dates.

        • Depends where you're seated on the plane. If you're towards the back it might be quieter than in the middle.

        • +1

          @MrZ:
I flown front, middle and back of the 777. I guess my ears musnt be that sensitive ;)

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:

Must have been a bad experience for me then in premium economy (which is in the middle on Virgin Australia). I was in business last time and it wasn't too bad but still louder than A380.

        • Same, it was a great flight with Air NZ. We had the new 777-300 on the way there which was slightly nicer than the 200, the lighting was great to wake up to!

  • +2

Great deal, $990 available ex PER which is about the best deal I've seen since the GFC

  • Hi. Can you please provide the dates you found for the Melb $772 fare? Best I could find was over $1100. Thanks.

    • +1

Hi TA. Its in my description Feb10-16

    • Is that including the code?

      • Yes…..woudda been even sweeter if it didnt!!!

      • +14

Hi TA. Its in my description Feb10-16

Not sure how I missed that. This then is possibly the best travel deal posted in my opinion. $772 Melb - LA return is unbelievable. And the fact it includes checked baggage & meals is just the icing on the cake.

Thanks for this terrific post MBC!!!

I'll upvote the deal once I get some voting power back. I've run out of votes LOL.

        • +1

Coming from you, Ill take that as a compliment…you are the deal king!

I think yesterdays https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/163201 SYD-HKG sub $250 deal was probably better than mine.

The $839 fare I got this year was because of your post!! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/137780

If you remember I flew over to play World Series Poker….I bombed out in the tourney, but I did have a nice win on the pokies….and I discovered that any win above US1500 they automatically tax foreigners 30%.

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:

If you remember I flew over to play World Series Poker

You're kidding! Are you talking about the WSOP Main Event with a $10K buy in???

        • @tightarse:
Not main event….Event 44 was $1500 buy in

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:

Event 44 was $1500 buy in

So tell us, where did you finish, and what happened on your last hand? Bad beat?

        • +3

          @tightarse:

I finished late on day 1 (3 day event) . Play started at noon, and I was finished by about 8pm. I lost most of my stack on a K high flush, got done by the nuts. I went all in on my last hand with pocket 4's. I was so short stacked that the blinds were about to get me anyways. Wasnt too devoed that I lost. Was very surreal playing WSOP at the Rio, I mean I see this place on tv and youtube so many times felt weird being there. And celebrity poker player spotting was also a distraction. When I finished I consoled my sorrows in a big buffet at Aria (Wicked Spoon) and hit the drink…thats when I sat at a machine and won $5800. Then i discovered they automatically take their 30% cut when they bought my winnings to the machine (a touch over 4k). When I came home I enquired about an upgrade on airNZ and they offered me a business flight home for 900USD at the LAX terminal. I happily paid it!

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:
Great stories champ! May see you back there one day. Flush on flush loss is a bummer, especially when you have the 2nd nuts. That's poker, eh.

        • @tightarse:
          youve played WSOP in Vegas?

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:
No, but LOVE watching on TV. Not sure if you watched the One Drop with a $1,000,000 buy in. Crazy stuff! One hand was all-in pocket Aces vs pocket Aces and one got done by a flush! Imagine losing $1M like that.

        • @tightarse:
Yeah I saw that, if I remember well he flushed on the river. Crazy. Esfendiari was playing 3 tables next to me. He won the inaugural million dollar drop last year…he picked up a cool $18 mil for that.

        • @MelbBargainChaser77:
Yep saw that. Do you reckon Esfandiari, or any other poker players have OB accounts? Haha!

        • @tightarse:

I know a certain grump thats a sore loser like Hellmuth around this place….maybe its Phil himself??!!!!

  • +2

Wow, that's an incredible deal. I paid $1100 to fly to LAX from Brissie (leave in a week) and I thought that was a bargain. Happily save $350pp for a stop off in Auckland. AirNZ is a great carrier too.

    • +5

I flew AirNZ earlier this year to LAX and it was a great flight/plane/crew.

  • +22

so many holiday deals… so little holiday leave

  • I already had my holidays planned for next year.. Will have to try and squeeze in a sneaky US trip now too, these prices are too good. Cheers, MBC77.

  • Question, trying to help my mate in the US do a LA-Sydney return, would this deal be valid for that? Unable to find LA in the 'from' tab.

Edit: Just read the T&C's, looks like valid only for journeys from australian cities. Oh well. Great deal otherwise!

Great deal - found a Melb-LA return airfare for $742, departing Jan 22 and coming back on Feb 8.

  • +1

Good deal, the only catch is that travel times are pretty long for the cheap flights - I got 27 hours to LAX including a stop over.

  • +3

No <$1k love for Adelaide :-(

    • +1

Grab a cheapo domestic flight to Syd/Mel/Bris?

      • Baah…

      • Tiger sale fare!

        • Never again!

        • @muncan: Haha not good. Avalon FTW!

        • @Food: Our theme song is "Never Take Us Again"

        • @muncan: We will never, ever sack our coach :P we aren't Adelaide..
But its pretty poor you got turned around.. Wouldn't they know the weather is bad when they left?? Losers

  • anyone have any travel tips for LA?
Wife still whinging for a holiday and we have a 3 year old.. is visiting LA/USA a worthwhile venture in Feb?

    • +2

      Disneyland is calling your name!

      • yeah.. i assumed a disneyland trip would be a non-negotiable (just seems a waste that I would miss out on all the cool rides though ;) )

      • Yeah, sounds like a holiday around Anaheim/Disneyland would be ideal for keeping the wife happy and the youngin' entertained. Many areas of LA are putrid, Anaheim though is great especially for families.

        • +1

Loooong flight with a 3 year old mate, and at 3 the kid wont even remember Disneyland.

I'm taking my brood when they get a little older. They'll remember it and they will be much easier to travel with.

        • +2

          @UFO:

and at 3 the kid wont even remember Disneyland.

you think Disneyland is for her benefit ;)

    • +4

It is so long as you get out of LA. California alone has plenty to do.

    • +5

      I would say - YES!
Especially if your three year old would like Disneyland (and I can't imagine one who wouldn't).
The only bummer is the falling $AU

    • If you're staying close to the airport on your last day, take a bus to Santa Monica for ~$1 and save $$$'s on SM accommodation. It's exactly like GTA V. I hear Malibu is also quite nice.

    • +1

Your wife would love the shopping, it is fantastic

    • from reading late feb aint exactly the best weather around LA..
      any thoughts?

    • +1

      Thanks for all the info

      19th Feb->6th March….
looks like im going to Disneyland ;)

$2300 all up with bookin fee (Bankwest CC gives travel insurance which i wouldn't get via a POLi payment) for 2 adult + 1 kid..

  • +6

I rang them up and no stopovers permitted with these fares as they are "point-to-point". Also for Velocity expect only 4,100 points for these return flights (MEL-AKL-LAX-AKL-MEL).

    • +3

I didn't expect them to offer any points for this bargain basement price .

  • Great price, very tempting. Only thing is it isn't particularly warm then..

    • +1

It is if you take an hour flight to Vegas ! 8k QANTAS points (lax-las +$5usd) each way or about $180rt on sprint airlines would get you there!

      • +2

Or $49 each way with 2 checked bags if Southwest are having a sale.

      • +5

Do not fly Spirit. It's like Tiger Airlines but a million times worse with more hidden fees.

Because you're flying overseas, I'm assuming you'll have checked luggage. Their checked luggage is like 50 bucks a piece. Even HAND LUGGAGE costs money to bring on.

      • +7

Or rent a car from LAX and hike it up the freeway, you'll be there in half a day

        • +3

^And the scenery once out of LA is breathtaking too. Road-tripping definitely the way to go.

        • It's about 3 or so hours drive.

  • +1

    anyone found any Perth deal?

  • +2

Thanks OP, amazing deal. This is now my second USA trip booked thanks to OzBargain (last was with Qantas for around $800 return). Never thought I'd get a deal cheaper than that!

    • +1

Wow. I don't think we'll ever see a qf price like that to lax again. When did u get that? I payed $900 on qf in 2009 which I though was amazing. Then $1100 in 2011 on Virgin Australia and $839 earlier this year with AirNZ. And now this cheapest price ever!! Best exchange rate I've had was $1.07 US to the Aussie- that was amazing spending power. And worst was 0.68 US to the AUD

      • +1

        It was actually $850 - here's the deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70589

Fingers crossed the exchange rate doesn't fall too much before Feb!

      • Worst exchange rate I ever had was $0.48 USD - 2001 was not a good time for Australians to travel in the US

        • Yeah I went to Hawaii that year with that exchange rate. Funny thing was, everything was so cheap it wasn't that big a deal!

        • +1

@Wampus: I was travelling in an RV for 6 months. It's a big deal the longer you stay… :-) #firstworldproblems

  • Can find any for that price

  • +2

Whoot… picked up tickets BNE->LAX for the whole family (2+2kids) for $2700 total

    • +1

What dates steven? I'm looking for the family aswell :)

  • Dayum this is a ripper deal! So tempting….

  • I can't find any for that price… I've writen in the promo code but they still show as around $1100 (Syd-LA). Does the total price (at the immediate booking page) actually include the promo code discount?

  • That's awesome deal! Thanks for posting…fits in my travel dates for next year. Good thing I waited! :D

  • Even though the dates I want are within the specified time frame I can't find anything under $1800(ish) return.

  • -1

    scratch that

  • +2

fk, booked a trip to Taipei only yesterday, now comes LA deal. Anyway, FEB is too cold for me. day light is still short. no good, no good…….

  • +5

Looks like we're all going to LA! Time to start LABargain.com?

  • I spent time and picked out a flight. I spent time and researched an itinerary. My wife told me she can't fly those dates… Time spent for naught…

    • +3

      solo holiday… look out vegas?

      • +3

lol… the Hangover solo OzBargain edition - One man's journey to save money against all odds…

  • Thanks soooo much for this post!! This deal is too awesome to resist. Ended up booking 2 flights for 6th Feb to 15th Feb (arrive back Melb 17th). Lots of other dates available too! Return trip with a 10.5 hours transit in Auckland is adequate for a day trip in NZ since we arrive at 8am.

Can't wait…! Being mid Feb, the cold there will be similar to Melb's winter (about 10 deg)?

  • Just booked flights to the Philippines for Feb/Mar & have flights to Bali Nov/Dec, life is too short.

  • Are New Zealand Airways quite good when it comes to service / comfort etc?

    • Service is great, however comfort is up to the individual flying them. If you are on their 777-300 comfort is certainly below par, there are good factors (mood lighting, order food through IFE, etc) however the 10 abreast seating is very squishy. The sacrifice for this extra seat in every row often comes at the isles (prepare for a game of shoulders vs food carts) and the arm rests (you thought they were small before? Try a little more than half that), with just an inch and a half coming off the seats.

If you can get a ride on the 777-200 it is a far more pleasant economy trip.

    • -1

yes i was satisfied with there economy service/food/crew

  • At which screen of booking the flight should I see the total price (including discount)? I've tried several combo's in the dates and the cheapest has been $1067

  • +2

OzB meet up on the flights?

  • +2

Don't forget to use http://www.seatguru.com/ to get the best seats for your flight

  • can't seem to get dates.. found a 6 day period in december but thats not long enough :(

    • i found 2 month …december 5 to feb 4….from Melbourne for $803

  • +7

with the amount of ozbargainers going, how about we book a whole plane for ourselves, we can have an enloop party! scotty and co in first class…JV can have the toilet seat :)

  • Does anyone have advice for tour packages? I'm planning to go for about 10 days. Thanks!

    • What do you want to see/do? You could go celebrity house spotting, or travel to a nearby national park.

      • Thanks for the reply mooooooo. I'm not too sure actually haha. Just saw this deal before and now I'm rushing to book :P. I was hoping to see a couple of places along the west coast and of course DisneyLand
