MSY: Western Digital 3TB Elements External HDD - $109 Pickup + S+H for Delivery Option

750

MSY are having a promotion on the Western Digital 3TB Elements External HDD starting tomorrow and ending Thursday.

Cheapest price I could find via Staticice was $139 which is more than MSY normal selling price of $129.

EDIT: Redid the search on Staticice as some companies use WD instead of Western Digital and this is still the lowest price around.

However if you can find stock at an OW you can price match but the model numbers seem to be different on the website although the picture are the same, so you may want to check the model number on the shelf before hand. Link to OW - http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/western-digit…

EDIT: Just did a quick search on the web and it seems that these drives have a 3TB WD Green drive inside, however I couldn't find info on whether you can pull them apart or not.

EDIT: Thanks liamk135, it seems like you can pull them apart.

I have bought one of these exact models from MSY about 3-4 months ago. Took it apart and put the 3TB WD green hard drive into my computer and it has worked perfectly.

    • Cheap considering 3TB WD green starts around $125 for internal drive only.

      5400 or 7200?

      • Green = 5400

    • As per my standard comment on this - This does void the warranty.

All WARRANTY CLAIMS ARE VOIDED IF A PRODUCT IS RECEIVED UNDER ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
      A. Product was damaged during transport as a result of bad packaging
      B. Product damaged, modified, scratched, or opened
      C. Product has one or more WD labels removed or torn.

Given that I just RMA'd 4 Seagate 3TB's and 2 WD Green 3TB's and got sent replacements under warranty in about 10 days :) I can honestly say its great to have a non-voided warranty!

P.S: Its all luck with HDD's these days I swear, they must get dropped and generally beaten up in transit, 1 of my 4TB Seagates was DOA the other week, Its like the Fujitsu scandal from the early 2000's ATM.

warranty or not, would you still handover your HDD (full of data) to the manufacturer for repair under a warranty claim?

        • Depends what you are hiding? Obviously your pockets are full of cash and you don't mind throwing away money when anything that stores any data breaks…

I imagine that WD/Seagate etc would be relatively surgical in the process of erasing drives so they can repair/salvage parts/re-sell. The scandal of stolen information from a Hard Drive Manufacturer probably wouldn't go down so well…Hence their disclaimer on data loss etc.

I am also pretty sure considering these drives were part of a Hardware RAID array and mainly virtual machine images it would make it pretty hard to get usable data from it…but I guess if you were the Fappening guy you probably wouldn't want hand them over…

      • Good points on voiding the warranty. I certainly wouldn't do that to save $20. I DID do it to chuck a 2TB HDD into my laptop. They don't sell these things outside of enclosures, so I had no choice if I wanted the 9mm form factor.

  • thanks! thats a great price!

    • Especially when you can pull it apart to repurpose into a desktop rig.

Not sure on using it in a NAS though still reading up on it, some users have no issues and some have issues. Guess it is all based on how hard to thrash it and the environment it is in.

The surge protector's not too bad either. Has the same Joule/Amperage rating as Belkin and Monster surge protectors that cost $60-80 dollars elsewhere.

  • Great price! I paid like 150-170 for a 4tb from Amazon, which I totally forgot was an American plug lol

I may have to grab one of these, I'm running out of storage, great that I can pull it apart and use it as an internal drive aswell if need be later on!

  • After 15 minutes of research, i still cant figure out the RPM of this 3TB WD, it could be anywhere between 5400rpm to 7200rpm?

Please help me with this, thanks.

      Since it's green, it's most likely 5400.

  • The hdd on ow is actually has the same model number, you need to go to the specification tab to see it.

    • Yes can confirm same model. Worth the price match, i will try tonight :)

  • fwiw, i have the fax version of this printer and I personally think it's a great printer for the price…

Got one in OW (Russell St, Melbourne) half an hour before. It is $103.55. Thanks!

  • Am I the only having trouble getting to the specials on the MSY site? Or do they get updated later in the day?

  • got one from OW Trinity Gardens for $103.55.
    thanx OP.

  • Managed to put an order via phone for $103.55.

    Thanks OP!

  • The idiot at OW Castle Hill hung up on me!! I think he got annoyed by me asking if he would price match.

    • One day, if i ever make it back into the retail electronics industry, I will help out all my OzBargain family members i promise!

  • what does everyone think of the surge protector?

    • I've got one at home. I think it's good, nicely spaced out, looks nice too. Haven't had any issues with it, which is why I'm trying to get more!

  • Went to Ow Virginia and got myself one for $103.55. thanks Ozzos!

  • I'm looking for one that has wireless capabilies like Apples Time capsule. Can these do wireless?

  • Rockhampton OW had heaps, I grabbed four for the NAS. the cashier didn't bat an eyelid at the pricematch although he did ask how much it would cost to ship up here, I played dumb and he said not to worry. Thanks ozbargain this has been an expensive couple of days - flights to LA and now this! My A7 arrived just last week, that was another OzB special from August….

    • Hmmm… the only A7 that comes to mind is manufactured by Audi. I had to check your vote (not post) history to see that yours was manufactured by Sony. :-)

  • Got one price matched with OW, no probs. Not cracked it open yet to check what the drive is.

Anyone know the approved method for opening the case non-destructively?

  • Is that data in these encrypted? I read that some have an encryption chip though it maybe only on the My Book Essentials

  • Went to the OW on Ann st in Brisbane AND and they said that they tend to just price match msy. They have about 5 left after I picked up one

  • Got two at OW for $103.55 each. No issues with price match. Thanks OP.
I'm thinking: test drive them for a few day and then WDIDEL3 to 300 sec.
Now the big question … to FreeNAS or not to FreeNAS???

    Poor MSY.

Post a great price and everyone buys from OW instead.

    Got 2 myself. Good price.

    • +1

      I don't feel sorry for them :)

  • thanks op. Called into OW Geelong tonight. Priced matched no problems. I had to only endure the 'oh, here we go again' look. That look I think has to be worth AT LEAST 12% rather than the 5% on offer. Hell…I'd almost pay full price - as long as they could guarantee me the look.
