Click 40cm Pedestal Fan $11.98 @ Bunnings Warehouse

220

Just bought one of these at Bunnings Warehouse Greenacre. Good power output and construction. It's not as tall as the more expensive fans but good for rooms in which you sit down a lot. I'm getting ready for a hot summer of gaming in my room/sauna with this thing.

Plenty available at Greenacre, probably available in most other stores too.

  • They also have the 50W version for the same price. http://www.bunnings.com.au/click-40cm-50w-white-3-speed-pede…

That's the regular price of that fan and has been for at least a year (I have two of them in this room).

Okay for low->medium use, certainly not powerful enough to mitigate the ravages of the height of summer.

Any recommendations for a fan that might help mitigate the ravages of summer?

        Haha

Certainly, my good man. I reveal to you, my protege, my 6 level protocol for mitigation of the ravages of summer. Technically, one could quibble there are further levels, but this about sums up the power of each product.

It's mostly a function of how much you're willing to spend and how loud of a fan you're willing to
        endure.

Level 1: One $12 Click Fan
Level 2: Two $12 Click Fans
Level 3: Moretti 40CM Floorstander - decently powerful and the least ugliest, if aesthetics are at all on the menu
        http://www.bunnings.com.au/moretti-40cm-grey-hi-velocity-flo…
        Level 4: Dynabreeze 180W $99 Fan Setting 1
        http://www.bunnings.com.au/dynabreeze-45cm-silver-industrial…
        Level 5: Dynabreeze 180W $99 Fan Setting 2
        Level 6: Dynabreeze 180W $99 Fan Setting 3

Ultimately, the 180W fans are very good - but they are very loud, even on the lowest setting.

I have also found that the floor standing fans that tilt up are less prone to eventual degradation, which leads to the awful vibration sounds that all fans eventually get.

Depending on your situation (ie, children), you can "overclock" a fan by removing the grill. This is only possible on the click fan in that list because all the others are far too powerful to do this. I believe the back pressure cools the motor because they do seem to last significantly less time if you do this (this could be entirely uninformed but there is definitely higher throughput from a non grilled fan). Also, I have accidentally put a toe in a fan configured for this whilst sleeping. It was both extremely surprising and left a bit of a gash on a toe. Do only if you are a poor, very warm student.

They are also prone to bearing whine as well, to be expected from a cheap unit.

These used to be $10 and I have bought alot of them over the years. For the price they cannot be beat. Do they still come with 2 year warranty?

  • Mine had this horrible motor-oil like smell for a while, eventually went away.

Just remember that chances are there is NOT a piece missing. It's inside the other one.

(Apparently quite a common complaint when I took mine back thinking it was missing a piece)

The X shaped base on these has a very crude plastic can on the end of each arm. This cap breaks and falls out.

After that occurs, accidentally kicking the base in the dark causes swearing that will wake other family members, and the resultant bloodflow will make your carpets look like a crime scene.

I've always been a fan of your crime fiction novels.

Bought quite a few (maybe 7 or 8?) of these sub $20 fans over the years and am surprised at the deviation in quality despite all appearing to be from the cheapest of the cheap factories. They do the job well eg bedroom or garage and are better than nothing but after buying some more expensive fans too I can appreciate the quieter and feature packed standing ones in the $99-$150 range from good guys. The natural feeling isn't special but having remote and timer are nice.

    • I'm not sure which one the op posted but I prefer the ones which include everything you need to assemble inside the box. Once I bought one when my mates and I rented a holiday house in Palm beach without AC or a fan in the second bedroom so I got one of these but then realised it needed a screw driver to tighten the x base and attach the motor assembly to the cylinder stand.

some one say that this is a fantastic deal..

  • I bought one of these from Bunnings last summer and I watched as the fan literally flopped over on one of its four horizontal support legs — the leg was so thin it couldn't support the weight of the fan properly and the leg bent. Now, this may have been a manufacturing fault, but the guy at the Bunnings return counter didn't even blink an eyelid when I took it back. I'd say I wasn't the first!
