  • is this good value for money? (I havent been keeping up with vga cards for a while…)

    • +3

depends on the level of gaming you're planning on doing….admittedly theres been better value cards but they've been at more than double this price…..so in keeping with spring carnival, its really horses for courses….

      • +2

And you can get 2 in crossfire

      • I mainly want to play games like GTA IV & V and sleeping dogs and maybe watchdogs, sometimes racing games… (dont know which is the latest ones). But the MAIN thing I wanna do is to play PS2 emulation…

BTW I'm coming from an ancient HD 4850 and my CPU is an i5 4440… :)

        • +1

then for the money, buy 2, install, sit back and WIN

    • +5

This is great value. These were (and still are) pretty good cards and will run almost any game at medium to high resolution.

    • +3

At 1080p gaming it really is good value, though if you have a higher resolution monitor you'll want better. Also as 7850's go, this is a premium build.

This guy is playing watch dogs at 1920x1200 resolution at ultra settings on a AMD 7850, fps is 19 to 27:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1HY-4alR4Q
If you have 1080p monitor and only do 2x AA you'll get 30fps average.

Don't crossfire, don't get two at once. Crossfire is good for an upgrade later option, but if you are spending money on two now, look for one single better card.

  • I run this with a 3770k and run everything on high at 1080p.it was an absolute beast of a card when it came out, and a very good OCer

  • +1

purchased two, upgrading a 4850 or 70 and a GTX460 to these cards, fantastic value under $100 and still decent/recent enough card (compared to my dinosaurs anyway!)

    • haha i'm thinking whether to replace my 4850 too! :)

  • -1

If i remember correctly the R9 270 or R9 270x are these cards rebranded. For the price they are a very good value. I'm going to pass as I am looking for a replacment for my XFX HD5850 Black Edition and this will only be a minor upgrade, im targeting the R9 280X or when it arrives the R9 285X.

    • I think that the 7870s are the equivalent of the R9 270s.

  • Sounds like this is a good deal then…but would my CPU i5 4440 + 8GB ram be a bottleneck??

    • Shouldnt be

    • +1

I run an R9 270 (slightly more powerful than the one posted….I think, I'm still learning this stuff), with 8gb ram and an i5 4440 and haven't had any issues.

  • I've got the 6850 it ran battlefield 3 great.

  • How much of an improvement would one of these give in crossfire with my 7870 (2GB)? Does Crossfire automatically work with every game?

    • +1

I'm not sure you can crossfire a 7850 with a 7870. If you were to get two of these and crossfire them you would see an improvement

EDIT: it appears you can crossfire them but your 7870 will downclock to match your 7850

    • you need driver support to fully benefit but having said that most games see improved (~30 40%) frame rates on average. not sure with the older carders but I remeber hearing that the re-branded AMD cards (270, 280, 290 etc) are able to crossfire with different tiered cards at the speed of the lowest card in the system….

this might be possible with your existing 7870?

    • +2

Yes you can crossfire your 7870 with a 7850. Yes you would see a huge performance boost of over 60% in most games. If you crossfired it with another 7870 you would probably get 80% improvement on average, but you won't find a brand new 7870 for $90 unfortunately.

Not sure what you mean "automatically" work… But anyway, I'll tell you how it does work and you should be able to get whatever meaning you are looking for from that. You enable crossfire by checking a box in the AMD Catalyst Control Centre software. You do not need to do anything else, no changing settings in games etc. Just tick a box in the amd software and you are good to go. As for working in all games, crossfire is supported by most games but not absolutely all. Also some games when they are released will not be optimised for crossfire straight away so it may take time until you see the full benefit (or any at all) of having 2 gpus in crossfire. There will be some titles that will never support crossfire at all but these are rarely the more popular games.

Make sure your motherboard will support crossfire though (check the mobo specs or give us your motherboard model ad we can check)

      • Yes you would see a huge performance boost of over 60% in most games. If you crossfired it with another 7870 you would probably get 80% improvement on average,

Your figures of 60 - 80% are completely hypothetical.

It depends entirely on the game's engine and how good the CF profile for it is (or if one even exists for that matter).

For every title that will scale close to a 2:1 performance increase with a CF setup, another 9 won't.

Multi-GPU gaming is rather pointless; two mid-range cards will only trump one high-end card on synthetic benchmarks.

Then there's micro-stuttering and the abundance of crashes/bugs/glitches/anomalies that multi-GPU users have to put up with. This is coming from someone who gave it a shot for 2 years and found it pointless.

        • Your figures of 60 - 80% are completely hypothetical

Sorry mate, but no they are not.

Having used two different crossfire set ups for the last 2 years myself there is nothing hypothetical in there. I went from a pair of 7950s with beautiful smooth gameplay and no crashes to a r9 290 and the performance downgrade was significant (though both were equally stable.) I then had a pair of r9 280x's which I sold to go to a gtx 970. Performance is similar between these two setups and there was no increase in percieved smoothness or any other factor. Just less noise and less heat which was a non issue for me since the 280x's were cool and quiet enough in the first place. I like trading cards around and have had plenty of different gpu set ups over the last few years.

Scaling is incredible just have a look at any review around of crossfire or sli cards in the last 2 years. They will all tell you the same thing. Scaling is for the majority of recent big titles 70-100%.

Please note I am not talking about dual card scaling from more than 2 years ago. Worse scaling and stutter was rampant. This is not the case anymore. Not that I haven't seen people with issues, particularly with the r9 290(x) cards. However many more were using dual r9 290s without issue than had issues.

        • +2

@picket23: I'll believe that stuff when I see it.

I've been following SLI/CF benchmarks since 2010 and I haven't seen any drastic improvements in scaling.

It's still around ~50% for most games and GPU under-utilisation is still a chronic issue.

Stuttering hasn't gone away because it's an inherent flaw of Alternate Frame Rendering (which is the most common way of dividing up rendering tasks between two GPUs; GPU 1 renders frame #1, GPU 2 renders frame #2, etc). The lack of frame synchronisation (each frame needs to be timed precisely in order to have a perceivable "smoothness" to the viewer, instead of being jittery/jumpy) can be brought on by two GPU chips not being exactly identical in terms of performance due to the variability of the manufacturing process or by the PCI-E lanes/PCI bridge simply being saturated and not having the bandwidth necessary to relay frames to the monitor in a timely fashion.

Micro-stutter disappears when you add a third GPU for three-way Crossfire/SLI or when you use a non-AFR rendering technique (Split-Frame Rendering).

This Tom's Hardware articles pins the precise cause of micro-stutter as being bandwidth limitations inherent in PCI-E (because usually ONE card is driving ONE monitor, so all of the second card's signals have to pass via the PCI bridge to the first, which is too slow of a medium when we're talking about millisecond response times): http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-stutter-c…

"- Aluminum core, no the risk of explosion."

Is explosion a real risk in using powerful GPUs?!?

    • +6

Yes people are tragically losing their lives all the time from exploding killer video cards.

  • +1

    Sold Out.

    • +4

thx, updated…….thank god for all you ozbargainers for removing the temptation….

  • +3

There is a big chance that you will be getting a used/ refurbished/ repaired card from centrecom: this is based on the many, many reviews about Centrecom dodgy business practice (http://www.productreview.com.au/p/centre-com.html). Read the recent reviews for yourself, even from a week ago.

  • OH CRAP!!! missed it while doing research on the card!!! :(

    • +9

First rule of OzB is buy now. Second rule, cancel order after doing research.

      • +1

hahaha, except with places like COTD I couldnt even change an order a couple of hrs after submission

  • Missed out again! I need to lurk OzB more….

  • I saw some other cards on centrecom (clearance sale) are there any good ones?

  • +6

Hi guys, they now have some MSI R9 270 Overclocked 2GB up for $135 those who feel burnt:

    http://www.centrecom.com.au/msi-r9-270-gaming-graphics-card-…

  • -4

I'm glad i stop PC gaming, every year you had to upgrade you GFX card, memory, then CPU, then cooling, then run two side by side,

seeing some of the demos with these latest cards make me sick!! the jerkiness is still there, ugly!!!

    • +4

The only thing that needs upgrading every now and then is your GPU, and that's only about every 3 years or so. My graphics card is from 2011 and only with recent games has it felt a little old. I've got no plans to upgrade my CPU or RAM any time soon and if I remember correctly I bought both of those things in 2010.

Besides, if jerkiness is your problem, you can always limit the FPS to 30. That's all you're getting on consoles anyway, in most cases. Inconsistent framerates annoy me too, but I just make the game as ugly as possible to get it running at 60. I don't really care how it looks.

    • My rig was built in 2010, and the only thing that has been updated has been HDD (to SSD + extra HDD) and RAM (8GB to 16GB after having one of my RAM sticks failing on me). I am still running the same CPU and GPU and would still be running the same RAM if it wasn't for silly low prices (in 2012) and an issue with one of my RAM modules. My old 5850 is showing its age but at the same time I am not feeling the need to upgrade urgently either.

      • I actually checked RAM prices yesterday and was surprised at the price. It really was dirt cheap a couple years ago.

    • I'm going to agree with the other people here, you don't need to upgrade like crazy.

I got my PC mid 2010, same CPU, same motherboard, same cooling, same case, same PSU, same DVD-writer and same monitor. I have added more RAM without losing existing RAM, added SSD keeping existing HDD for data, only replaced GPU.

If you get jerkiness, you are setting the settings too high for the system and you are getting FPS spikes, either stick on V-Snyc or lower settings.

  • Anyone can recommend similar graphic card, similar price range with 2 mini display ports.

  • Rep any deals around a 7950?

Edit: Oops just saw op wasn't rep :)

just got one for $129 + shipping
      now sold out…
hope the one a grabbed isn't a refurb or anything

      • I would say that 99.9% sure that it was their refurb/ repaired card that had laying around acquiring dust. Just like the other day an OzB member got a similar card and it came in a ripped up box, card looked like it came out of an old pc, used heaps etc. Now the OzB member has issues as Centrecom aren't responding to his questions.

        • +1

I just received my R7850 today. I'd say its 100% refurb. Its got dust all over it, box looks nicked. Feeling very cheated. If I'd known I might have made a different decision.

        • @kayz102:charge back

  • Sold out :(

  • Just putting this out there for any buyers, if you start to notice coil whine (as I do with my 7970 Twin Frozer; although it's otherwise a rock solid card), there's a pretty simple fix for it that I mentioned in this post, just keep V-Sync on at all times.

Coil whine was a pretty common complaint with the HD 7000 series cards, especially those versions produced by "budget" vendors (i.e. anyone but Gigabyte or ASUS).

  • my 6850 is aging well, Alien Isolation could run everything on max 1080p settings, no hiccups whatsoever,

    who needs a PS 4 huh? :p

    • The 6850 isn't that far off a 7850 though :) But I'm very glad to hear that game runs well, as I'm going to buy it soon - it's the only game that actually looks interesting at the moment (my machine runs a 7950 though).

  • If anyone bought an extra card and willing to sell it, please contact me.

    • want mine? It just arrived and you know… HSF and PCI connectors Dusty , there is no crossfire bridges, yada yada yada…..

  • +3

It looks like this card have been used by someone. 2 of the people who bought this (viggenn & Roly) have a similiar problem that the HSF of this GPU turned out to be dusty.

It looks like this deal (HD7850, with GTX 780,GTX 680 either ZOTAC or Gainward) turned out to be the 2nd hand GPU sale. CentreCom FTW?!?!? that's why their store rating in OZbargain turned out to be really low.
Me as a first-naive-innocent customer think that this is an Impossible deal since the GPU price is turned out to be damn low. I also regret that I bought 3 XFX HD7850 (together with ZOTAX GTX680 deal) & 2 MSI HD7850

Everyone , don't get tricked by this deal! That's why at first they didn't mention the item condition. 780 price is almost 50% off because the graphic card is already 2nd or 3rd hand!!
I guess that's why PCCaseGear have a really gr8 rating since they do honest deal & prioritize the quality of the service and items with very very reasonable + LOWEST NORMAL price rather than showing off frenzy price which turned out to be faked & trap !

  • +2

I just got the card this afternoon.
    The card is really shit.
The new card will make screen mess when I play NBA2K15.
When I change to my old HD6850, it works fine.
And it is definitely refurb, don't trust this shit.

  • i just wanted to post here as well because there are a few people unhappy with their cards.

I received the two cards i ordered today, everything was well sealed and did not appear to have ever been used, there is no dust under the fans, all the port caps are in place and the most tell tale sign of use is non existent (lines on the PCI-e interface pins)

all in all i'm happy with my purchase, sorry to those that believe they received less than stellar products

    • Would like to know if anyone else beside peter05 that received a brand spanking NEW sealed item?

      • just wanted to clarify that the retail box was not sealed but the card and antistatic bag inside were sealed.

i haven't actually purchased any graphics cards in the last few years where the outside box was sealed, but i tend to buy mid/low end graphics cards so that might not be applicable to the high end ones

        • Hey peter05, did you get any of the cables that were meant to come in the box?

        • @Osmium:

i only received the power cables in the box, no crossfire adapter or anything else

got manuals and driver cd, didn't get any display port adapters

      • I've got two on the way that I'll be picking up tomorrow. I'll be sure to check them to make sure they're new and let you know either way.

        • +3

Well, the cards arrived and it's mixed news. The good news is that the cards themselves appear to be new; there's no scratches on the PCI connectors and I can't see any dust. There are minor blemishes on the metal cooler, but nothing I'm worried about. All the port covers are in place.

Bad news is that there are no CrossFire bridges in either box; apart from the cards themselves, there's only the manual, CD and the Mini DP to DP adapter. One box has the DVI/D-Sub Adapter. There should be CrossFire bridges and 6-pin power cables according to MSI's website.

          http://au.msi.com/product/vga/R7850_Twin_Frozr_2GD5OC.html#h…

Also, the manufacturer seal on one card's anti-static bag has been seemingly detached and reattached.

My guess is that the box was opened and the cables used in other builds. This is really poor form from Centrecom; I won't be buying from them again. I will be chasing them up for the CrossFire bridges; fingers crossed the rep can help me out.

        • +3

          Update:

Picked up mine from the PO today…

NOT AMUSED! Opened it up & found:

          • ESD bag seal was clearly opened
          • Black shades (heat burns?), fingerprints & dust on card
          • Missing DVI port cover
          • Missing DVI/D-Sub adapter
          • Missing CF bridge
          • Missing Mini DP to DP adapter

Only GFX card, 6-pin power cable, manual, driver CD were in the box.

Clearly a customer return which they didn't bother to send back to MSI to get refurbished.

After I get my refund I'm boycotting CentreCom for life! Reviews don't lie!

        • ha ha, good luck getting a refund from centreCON! read my post below with link to peoples problems, just like yours!

        • @Logical:

PayPal dispute opened. That should help move things along. PP generally works in buyers favour.

I know better now to not buy from CC in future.

        • As an update, Centre Com agreed to send me two CrossFire bridges free of charge to make up for the ones not in the boxes.

        • @grab_ur_freebies:

Got exactly the same problem with you . I received the item yesterday, but I bought 2 and both of them totally dusty in HSF & PCI Connector. There are minor scratch in the metal cooler and the box-opener of GPU (the bottom one) looks a bit smashed, perhaps because they regularly open the box and get the graphic card and put it back again. The box itself WASN'T sealed, ha I knew it. Those guys(Staff Member of Centrecom) just did it on purpose because they used the graphic cards by themselves and put it back again to sell it. DISGRACEFUL!!

As a first user of OZBargain and first customer of CentreCom, I'm very very dissapointed and learnt from this lesson. I will chase them until they gave me all of the missing connector and other stuff.

        • @rodinthink:

I'd suggest you return it for a refund & spend the money on a card at a more reputable seller. Unless you don't mind the used goods you received.

Startrack courier is booked to pickup the parcel from my address to return to them tomorrow. Return costs are fully paid by CC.

        • @grab_ur_freebies:
I guess I will buy MSI r9 270 or 270x and crossfire it with HD 7850 (since it have the best value/ratio ) . I will return one of the card to them

BTW, I think the card might be a second hand and they used for MINING the BITCOIN 24/7 until it's 50% broken. It's impossible that it is refurbished item, the card seems very dusty and smell a bit funny (perhaps because of the burnt of over-used graphic card 24/7).

What do you think?Do you think they can use HD 7850 for mining craze(end of 2013)? If yes, then that's is just terrible, should just return all of them

        • @rodinthink:

I think you may be spot on with that theory. Explains why the HSF metal has a cinched/burnt shade tint. The one I got was like this.

Courier picked it up to return to them today.

        • @grab_ur_freebies:

Anyway I tried to ask them to give the discount $ 10 x 2= $ 20 (I know it's not worth it , but I'm just curious about their reaction) & ask for missing component inside the box (CF Bridge,DVI/D-Sub adapter,DP to DP adapter). Turns out that they no longer provide discount anymore and won't willing to give the missing component, quite dissapointed. Perhaps I will shipped these GPU back , but it's too incovenient for me since I'm at the Top End. Bugger

IMPORTANT UPDATE: We have been informed that some of our cards were manufacturer refurbished. As we only sell new products, we lodged an investigation and had contacted a group of customers, we found that majority had new cards, but several had received manufacturer refurbished cards. We were not aware of this and apologize for this issue, for those who have received manufacturer refurbished, please contact [email protected] and our team will resolve this issue.

    • +4

What a lot of BS from the Centrecom Rep! As if you can not see that the box you are sending is opened, old and damaged (supposed to be new stock!), as if you STILL haven't woken up to the fact that plenty of people have failed to receive new products from your store throughout the this year alone! As if you still haven't got the message loud and clear that Centrecom do not standby their products and do not want to deal with customers with these issues. Read the reviews online about Centrecom dodgy business practices. Many, many people have learned their lesson and now avoid the Centrecom store. I was going to buy the $99 gaming motherboards (reduced from $299), I was going to buy the HD7850 cards as well… After hearing about all the problems I decided not to, and looks like my judgement was spot on.

      • they say nice words so the kids will believe it.

        ..and they do.

      • Understandable. Our managers are taking this issue very seriously and are currently in talks with this particular supplier. For this graphic card the seal is on the inside, it would have been impossible for our staff to detect if it was used unless they opened the box, which they are not allowed to otherwise all our products would be tampered with.

        • For this graphic card the seal is on the inside

I believe there are sticker seals on both the outer box & on the ESD bag containing the card. Even if the bag seal inside was not visible the box seal would have clearly been.

        • @grab_ur_freebies: Hi grab_ur_freebies, yes for most products, but not for graphics cards. Of course there are some that have it like the EVGA ones, but in general seals are only visible on the packaging inside for most graphic cards.

        • Perhaps some of your company staff get the graphic card (since they have an "easy access" to the product), left the box, and put it back again . They won't steal it since the manager do regular stock-check. It sound silly put this could be the possibility.

You know that the graphic card is the most wanted and changed hardware since it used for gaming & current game require a heavy specificaiton for GPU to catch up. To get a Great graphic card is prety much like to get a new Muscle New Car so the temptation is really hard to resist.

        • @Centrecom:

I think the card might be a second hand and they used for MINING the BITCOIN 24/7 until it's 50% broken. It's impossible that it is refurbished item, the card seems very dusty and smell a bit funny (perhaps because of the burnt of over-used graphic card 24/7)

        SHUT UP

        & Take my Votes

    • +2

This is not the first time you guys have sold refurbished cards advertised as new. So I'm pretty sure you were well aware. Either that or you have extremely poor inventory management if you can't even separate the refurbished products from the brand new products.

Personally, this is the 2nd time I have received a refurbished product and that is really disappointing. Hope you get your shit together.

  • +1

Yup mine is definitely a refurbish guys.. dust on the fan/heatsink. Anti-static bag obviously opened. It was a cheap price, but i could have bought a second hand one elsewhere… for cheaper… i thought it was new. Very disappointing!

  • I got mine last week but only got around to opening it up today.

Basically I only got the card inside the box and nothing else - ie. no manuals, paperwork or any cables. Tried installing drivers and it doesn't even detect the card. I thought it was my computer so I ended up reformatting it and still the same. Wasted my time!

    • +1

Funnily enough, the current 14.9 drivers appear to be pretty badly broken. You may well have a dud card, but try installing 13.2 drivers.

      • Okay I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks for the tip!
