Was looking for the best price on WD Reds for a NAS and came across these.

At the time of posting there appears to be more than 999 3TB drives available however only a handful of 2TB and 4TB drives.

Shipping to NSW is shown as US$10.97 for one 3TB drive, US$16.95 for two, US$28.91 for four etc. Shipping is slightly less for the 2TB and 4TB drives.

Newegg has almost identical pricing at the moment however their shipping starts at US$18.47 for one 4TB drive and US$26.06 for one 2TB or 3TB drive (for Standard shipping, it is only a dollar or two more for express shipping). If you are buying from Newegg the promo code "1014HLWN45" gives US$5 off purchases over US$50 or "NEWCUSAU10" should give $10 off for new customers (not sure if it is AUD or USD and whether the promo codes can be stacked).

    WD Red 2TB/4TB/6TB for US $98/ $121/ $169 + Shipping @ Amazon

I went to check out the prices. They seemed too good to be true.

The correct prices for 2TB/4TB/6TB are $98/$169/$289.99 + Shipping

    • Yeah, I was about to go jump off a bridge as the 5x4tb external drives i bought where this price, the three tb is 120.. Please fix your missleading title asap…

    • In fairness, he said USD.. And I'm not sure where your prices are coming from… 4TB is showing are about $200.

Edit: whoooa, now I see the mistake!! LOL
      Should be 2/3/4, not 2/4/6.

      • Sorry guys! I got distracted half way through writing it. That would have been amazing if it was true.

  • I was worried for a second when I saw this deal, but I bought 2x3TB at this price over a month ago. Thankfully I beat our dollar dropping so I actually got them for cheaper. :)

  • OK, this may not work for everyone.

If you were going to purchase another item from Amazon Export Sales anyway, then adding this as an additional item won't cost you very much in terms of shipping.

For example, I am looking to purchase another item on Amazon already (I'm buying travel luggage), with shipping cost of AUD$36. Adding this as an additional item, the total shipping cost of the order is AUD$41. This could be a good deal for some.

  • Hey guys, whats the deal with warranty on these with Amazon. WD's red's locally would have a full 3 years and can be returned to a local retailer. I gather is the default 30 days return to US at your cost with Amazon. If so is the risk here worth losing the warranty? e.g. assuming shipping of around $10 the 2TB is about $110 where its available in local stores for $125. Not much difference really and thats before negotiation.
    cheers

  • I wouldn't bother with these - I have had two WD 3tb delivered in the last month from Amazon and both DOA. It is a nightmare to get the money back out of Amazon. Just buy local and pay $5 - $10 more

LOL, what?! amazon support is always amazing! they even cover some of the costs to ship back typically.

      • some of the cost, what do you mean only some? and have you tried outside of the 30 day warranty?

    • cheers, gothebroncos, that sounds about what I'd expect.

  • haven't been chasing up hdd tech, never seen red WDs but anyone has tl;dr explanation of red vs green WDs?

    • +1

Reds are basically greens but optimised for use in NAS devices.

        Thanks AdrianW.

I had been hoarding greens the past half decade so looks like it's a good time to switch, since the green is known for the auto spin down… which makes it quite finiky for soho NAS. Didn't want to get the black WDs back then as they are overpriced and overkill.

nyone has tl;dr explanation of red vs green WDs?

The red ones cost more, the green ones cost less. That's about all you need to know.

Note that these are still NASware 2.0. The 3.0 is apparently better.

Also when converted to A$, the prices are very close to local prices ~$210 for 4TB

    A$217 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Western-Digital-Caviar-Red-4TB-NA…

did some reading… nasware 3.0 is more meant for 8bay and upwards and currently it seems to have a price premium because it is 3.0.

not sure if it's fair to compare ebay shipping to amazon shipping though.

the last time i bought a rear light bulb from ebay, it came in a folded up car brochure. Just 2 layers of paper.
