This has to be the best price it has ever been. I think you're confusing it with the standard ATH-M50 ;) This is the new and improved ATH-M50x.

"Audio-Technica took their well-regarded ATH-M50 and added more low-end response, less treble brightness, softer padding, and interchangeable cables."

    • Nah there was this one.. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/158497

Having said that I think Massdrop is more reliable than Gadget Bliss!

      • +2

No issues with Gadget Bliss. Faster shipping than Massdrop.

    • Damn - i just got a pair of M50's from Kogan for $162.
Have to say though, they are an impressive set of 'phones.
I might get a set of these M50X's for my mate.

  • How is this in term of noise isolation?

    • +1

I can tell you the original M50's provide great isolation…these new ones will be similar I suspect

  • Anyone think the blue version looks cooler? or is it just tacky? Would be nice to order electronics in colors other than silver and black just once.

    • +3

I got a pair of the blue ones and they look great! It's a navy blue and tan sort of colour, with copper accents; the photos don't do it justice. Grab a pair!

      • +2

Haha it's like $40 more, I guess that's the price of wanting something a lil different!

  • For those in the market for a truly great headphone, the legendary HD600 is on sale here for $329 delivered metro: http://www.deniswhite.com.au/sennheiser-hd600-headphones-fre…

To me (and many others) they are the best headphones ever. Spotless reviews: http://www.head-fi.org/products/sennheiser-hd-600/reviews and still regarded as the best universal headphones which come through with any genre of music. They're very forgiving of amps but improve with a good setup. They also make a great home theatre headphone… I wouldn't enjoy films any other way.

    • +1
      • Sure, it's close with $332 delivered at Kogan, except you don't have to wait months for it ;)

        • +1

Well, what I'm saying is - there is no rush buying them if it is a stretch as they are always that price.

    • +2

Personally not a fan of HD600's. Different market to the M50's as they're open and do require amplification, which needs to be factored in the price.

      • +1

I'm guessing you're guessing? Indeed, they're open, but they sound beautiful even just plugged into an average laptop jack. They're forgiving. I did post it in the M50 thread but the intention wasn't to compare them. While it's still on mind, I'm mentioning a great local price I've come across on a widely loved headphone.

        • Not guessing, I've demo'd and they're 300ohms. If Marcus says they require amplification then they do: http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=82

        • Why dont you post it as a seperate bargain….it is a very different market than the ATH-M50x (price, open vs closed etc, 38Ω vs 300Ω)

        • +2

Heh.. I'm guessing you're guessing that the HD600 are the best headphones, ever :-)

        • @Mongolian: I have the HD600 as well and can confirm that they are loud enough WITHOUT an amp. I have tested it with a Sansa MP3 player, which has a pitiful output voltage of 0.5V (~0.35VRMS), and also with the onboard audio from my PC.

Do not blindly buy an amplifier before trying out the headphone first. In most cases, an amplifier is not required.

        • If you're listening around any other people open cans are obnoxious. M50s and HD600's are completely different and in different categories.

      • what do you mean? Does it require a small box for the amp? What if i plug into a pc or iphone

        • +3

It requires some kind of amp to get the sound to adequate listening levels. You can still use it with any 3.3mm device, but they might not sound as loud and robust as intended.

    • HD600 are tinny and veiled

      • +1

        Are you high?

    • hes a known fanboy of the brand. they could have put out anything and he would have loved it

  • between this and Creative Aurvana Live! 2, which one is better?

    • hard to say, I only have the ATH-M50's and they are awesome, but I have not heard the CAL2's and have been sniffing at them as well. Maybe someone with experience with both will be able to weigh in.

  • Since the cables are interchangeable, does that make it possible to get a cable that has an inbuilt microphone? (say for online gaming)

    • +1

If you can find a cable that has a mic then you are good to go

      • Yep. Or you can buy one of those stand alone in line mics that slot in between the headphone and your cable, or between the end of your cable and phone/computer etc. As I personally do not own a set of these, maybe not possible with this model because of the cable lock as quoted in below comment.

    • +4

There's a locking mechanism on the cable and so you cant use third party cables on M50x
Source is the review posted above

Thanks for the responses, for anyone else interested I ended up ordering one of these:

      http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-M…

It is a small microphone that clips on to the headphone cable, this is ideal for me as it contains the separated (not integrated) microphone plug to connect to the back of the computer. Not sure of the quality, might be terrible.

  • Does anyone know if DJ store will price match

    • they won't do it but they gave me a quote for $185 pickup. now i'm in dilemma don't know which to get… this or CAL!2?

  • +1

    WOW it's now $119 +$20 delivery

    • +1

I think the heading should be updated to reflect. Its a really good deal. I'd buy but i already have the original m50

      • +2

        140 usd = 160 aud. Approximately.

    • +1

Massdrop's price is in US Dollars.

  • +1

How about the Fidelo L1s? They look rather pretty, how do they compare? I really shouldn't buy both..or one really hah

  • +3

Massdrop is really quite slow, so be prepared to wait.

    • Didn't need the 'quite' in there. They are just really slow.

  • -3

It's better to spend an extra $14 to get the Audio Technica AD900X imo. Way better bang for buck than Audio Technica M50X.

    • -1

      http://versus.com/en/audio-technica-ath-m50x-vs-audio-techni…

Also don't know where you're getting extra $14 from.

      • +1

Isolation and a need for more bass than cheap opens provide aside, he's right, the 900X is a better headphone with that in mind.

I own the AD900X, AD900, M30 and I have a pair of A900X (more expensive closed audio technica) headphones next to me, available. The difference between open and closed is very clear and unless you have need for the aforementioned two factors, you'd be a far happier person wearing 900X.

  • Do you guys know any place to audition these headphones in Melbourne before I pull the trigger? Thanks!

    • +1

There was a headphone place with high end headphones near the old I-store computer shop on Lonsdale St near Elizabeth St. You can check them there :)

      • This is the only I-Store I could find, so the headphone store is somewhere around that?

        Address :

55 WILLIAM / 459 COLLINS STREET MELBOURNE VIC 3000 (between Collins St & Flinder Ln)

        EDIT
        I think you meant Jaben?

        Melbourne CBD Store
        Shop 2, 398 Lonsdale St
        Melbourne, Vic 3000

        Thanks! :)

It's $5 more expensive to order from DWI, but shipping will be a week rather than a month from MassDrop - so IMO it's really worth the $5 extra to do DWI. Also there's a 12 month Australian warranty from DWI, so if there's any problems then DWI should be a lot easier to deal with.

    • Expired code

  • Deal Expired. All 400 units already gone.

    • It wasn't that amazing of a deal, really - like a 6 week wait for headphones that you can buy any time you like for $199 from a variety of local vendors (ie addictedtoaudio) etc.

  • I don't actually like my M50's (I don't mean M50X's).

I find theyre uncomfortable (I have a huge head) and I dont think they sound particularly good (although I'm probably spoiled by comparing to Unique Melody Miracles, which are canalphones, but have an amazing neutral sound).

    • Did you customs feel a bit weird at the start?

  • Massdrop shipping is so damn slow.

  • Does anyone who bought have any idea on when to expect the headphones? Kinda regretting buying from Massdrop now, I'd like them sooner rather than later!

Edit: Spoke too soon! My order, under "My Transactions" on their website shows that it was shipped on the 31st October.

Expected delivery to Australia is 2-4 weeks from the shipping date, as per their website.

  • Just making an update, as I appreciate it when others post them.

I received my order yesterday. The headphones are great, very impressed by the packaging and product quality.
