  • What sort of functionality does it lose when not paired with a Samsung device?

    • I own a Gear 2, so this may not quite apply with the Gear Fit:

You pretty much lose most functions on the Gear when it isn't paired with a Samsung device. You can still use the pedometer, heart rate and sleep applications, but it obviously won't sync to "S-Health" (The mobile application on the Samsung device).

In my experience, there's really not much point in buying a Gear if you don't have a compatible device. I had to pair the Gear with my phone before being able to use it.

It essentially relies on having that connectivity.

  • only compatible with samsung handset???

    • Looks like it:

      Samsung Galaxy S5 / Galaxy Grand 2 / Galaxy Note 3 / Galaxy Note 3 Neo / Galaxy Note 2 / Galaxy S4 / Galaxy S3 / Galaxy S4 Zoom / Galaxy S4 Active / Galaxy S4 mini /
      Galaxy Mega 6.3 / Galaxy Mega 5.8 / Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) / Galaxy NotePRO (12.2) / Galaxy TabPRO (12.2/10.1/8.4)

      Source

      • Thats not 100% correct…
The Australian version of the S4 mini (GT9195T) is not compatible as Telstra won't update the software on it.

Well, Galaxy gear is junk but this seems like good value.

    • +1

Hardly junk. I have the original Gear and it performs its duties very well. I bought one for checking/answering calls, emails, messages and controlling media without having to remove my Note 3 from my pocket at work. Saves me a lot of time and possible damage of dropping a phone off of a roof.

      • Agreed.

I have the original Galaxy Gear, and recently purchased the LG G Watch.

In some respects I think the Galaxy Gear is a more functional device.

    • I have a gear 2 and love it.
Great just to check to see on my wrist if an email/text/call comes in and whether its something i need to get the phone out of my bag for.
Couldn't go back to my old watch now, not enough functionality :)

  • I have the Gear Fit (got it when dick smith had 15% off their ebay store) and it works fine with my Sony SP. It obviously doesn't sync with S health but I tried it with a samsung phone for a few days and S Health was pretty rubbish. I have almost all functionality (pedometer, heart rate, notifications, control music, use the "find my phone feature") apart from being able to use companion apps (e.g. runtastic can be controlled from the fit when it is synced with a samsung but not with my Sony). Am happy with it and would buy it again.

  • Can the HRM sync with strava?

    • +1

No. The heart rate monitor is a static monitor so you need to actually stop and measure your heart rate as opposed to your heart rate being continually measured. Also, last time I check Strava stopped support for the Gear Fit due to some issues with its app (but they may have updated since then).

  • How long ago was this version released? I am wondering if is this the one they are displaying next to the note4 at highpoint's Samsung store.

    • Very likely. This and the Neo are the latest Samsung ones along with the Gear Live which runs on Google Wear OS.

  • Costco has this at a similar price as well. possibly cheaper. I remember seeing it within the 120-129 range.
