Keep in mind that this is the revised version too with the 1.6GHz Snapdragon quad core CPU as opposed to the 1.7GHz mediatek octocore. This current model also weighs less than the mediatek powered version.
I have been using the mediatek version for the past 4 months and its been great. Can only assume this version is better.

EDIT:

        • Good one!
          How's your new phone? :)

        • alwayslooking, how you managed to get A$228 with DHL?

        • +1

          @grygryjack: My bad, 228 USD.

Phone is good so far..only issue is that the screen blanks out once a call is made. And it's not going back to the screen where you can see the hang up buttons etc.

I had a look online and seems as though it might be an issue with the proximity sensor. It's pissing the wife off, so will have a look at when I get home tonight. Hopefully I can sort it out.

Apart from that its all good. Will play around with it over the weekend and let you know how it is.

        • @PissLUR:

Hopefully you don't have the same proximity sensor issue as I do, but if you do, then have a look at these links:

          http://en.miui.com/thread-27773-2-1.html (scoll to the end)
          and

        • @aghafoorkj: I picked up the multi language one.

        • @alwayslooking: Thanks for your review. I was about to pull the trigger when I read this review. I will wait until I can get confirmation that your issue with proximity sensor is fixed. It can be a major pain if the proximity sensor does'nt work properly, I hate it when I have experienced similar issue with custom ROMs.

        • +1

@sk280: OK, just got a call from the wife and she's managed to fix it. She said she did something in the settings and its working as it should be.

My guess is that she's re-calibrated the proximity sensor.

        • @sk280:
ok, phone started doing the same thing again so this is what i did. Works a charm now :)

          1. press to make a call and type the following numbers to get to the hidden menu.
          2. ##64663##
          3. inside the menu to scroll down to number 7 and press (everything is in chinese or something)
          4. now you can calibrate the proximity sensor. hold your phone up and do not have anything in front of it. now press the button in the middle. it should now be ok.
        • @alwayslooking: Thank you. So whats your overall verdict. Given that I cannot afford a One Plus One, is it the next best option for a 5.5 inch screen? As the proximity sensor issue reoccurred after you calibrated as above? What about lingering Chinese characters after selecting English language?

        • @sk280: Sorry for the delayed response. So far so good. No sensor issues are re calibrating it. I think it's a pretty good phone for its price. Wife is very happy with it so far.

The only thing is that some pre installed apps have Chinese names and they auto update themselves. I'm planning to take it to a local chinese phone shop and find out if they know what apps they are and if they can remove them.

Once my contract is over with Vodafone, I'm going to buy these kind of phones and also switch to Amaysim or other sim only plans. The likes of One plus One, Xiaomi etc are getting better as days go by.

Be aware this brand phones have a very high defect rate.

    • Source?

  • To2c is cheaper if you don't mind to use their standard shipping, otherwise it is $239.21(EMS - Express(6-12days) AU$27.50)
