Keep in mind that this is the revised version too with the 1.6GHz Snapdragon quad core CPU as opposed to the 1.7GHz mediatek octocore. This current model also weighs less than the mediatek powered version.
I have been using the mediatek version for the past 4 months and its been great. Can only assume this version is better.

17 to 40 business days for the free delivery? That's one to two month.

    • +1

for the specs, $202.98 + $14.00 (singapore post) is still not a bad price at all I reckon.

      • RMB is only 999, going back to China this summer~!! woohoo

      • Singapore post is still slow, but a bit more piece of mind. (Although no tracking once it reaches Australia!)

    • +10

Its free, if you want it quickly, pay their reasonable post charges.

I have ordered from merimobiles before. The free shipping is really long wait. More than a month to arrive.

    easily rooted? any custom roms?

edit; Just found it - framaroot

  • -1

does it come with bonus spyware?

    • +14

I would say the spyware claim is most likely sensationalist journalism, but if you're afraid that it might contain spyware install a custom ROM.

    • +14

check the spyware that is operating on the computer you are using to type that question…

      from http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/830922-chinas-xiaomi-smartph… :

The phone kept trying to make the connection, even after Li turned off Xiaomi’s iCloud-like MiCloud service. He then tried erasing and installing a new version of Android. The problem persisted.

      • +5

the epoch times? that's full of lies and fake news, i rather not believe them.

      • +6

The Epoch is Falun Gong funded news source, pretty well known to spew nothing but anti-chinese stuff.

        • +2

That cult is crazy, I once spoke to a lady from it that believed you could think away AIDS and cancer.

          I backed away slowly.

        • @Bunnyburger: Technically you can't develop a cure without thinking so I guess the crazy cult wins this round.

        • @static: I don't think that's true… history is littered with scientific breakthroughs (including medical cures) that were stumbled upon by accident with no direct thinking about the particular outcome.
          ;)

      • The comments were hilarious on that website

        • +2

You just can't imagine the scope of cyber spay affairs. You think there is nothing to substantiate the reasons why Australian PM and defense staff not to use their work laptops in China? The big miners were holding meetings in Singapore for the same reasons. Better think again. Things are indeed not what they seem.

        • +3

          @Cleansingatm:

The Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks files that have been leaked have revealed that spying is happening all over the world, by the US as well as China and other countries. Every bit of tech we used can be spied on if connected to the internet or mobile network.

So either don't worry too much about it, or do not connect to internet or use telecommunication equipment.

  • Do you need to root it for Australia 3/4G network?

    • As a bonus I guess :L

    • I don't think you need to root for 4G to work.

    • I'm currently using the previous version on TPG. No rooting required

      • +1

TPG uses only 3G, but good that it works for that.

  • does it even work for Aus's 4g network?

    • Says 4G FDD- LTE 1800/2100MHz. So yes it does work.

    • +11

Australia is currently using these LTE bands

2100Mhz (B1) FDD – Telstra (a handful of sites), Optus (Tasmania)
      1800Mhz (B3) FDD – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone
850Mhz (B5) FDD – Vodafone (refarming 5Mhz of 3G to 4G across all metro areas by end of 2014)
900Mhz (B8) FDD – Telstra (a handful of sites, utilises spectrum previously used by 2G)
700Mhz (B28) FDD – Telstra, Optus (switched on early in a couple of cities, will be widespread in 2015)
      2300Mhz (B40) TDD (0000008000000000) – Optus (Vivid wireless spectrum)

      To follow late 2014:

      2600Mhz (B7) FDD ( – Telstra, Optus, TPG?

This phone is compatible with Aussie 4g networks.

      • It's compatible, but you will have huge problems with 4G in some areas. For example, Optus only uses band 40 in Canberra so this wouldn't get 4G coverage.

        • +1

Maybe a silly question, but would it not switch to a 3G network if this were the case?

Reason I ask is because I'm planning to get this for my wife. She's got a Galaxy 2 and since Voda updated the firmware the battery is draining crazy and she hardly gets any reception in the house.

        • +2

          @alwayslooking:

sure will mate. For most day 2 day applications 3G is more than enough.

        • @gimme: Thanks mate. And I'm assuming it will work right out of the box.

Just have to change the language to English etc?

Merimobiles has a better reputation than Pandawill though, but I guess that is a bargain too.

  • Anyone have reviews on this? Looks tempting!

  • +1

this is really tempting…might be a good replacement for my iphone 4s

  • +1

Pandawill has TNT post for $6.98, anyone know how long does it takes to Australia?

    • +2

TNT is a reputable courier. I've used them in the past for urgent documents and parcels from overseas to Australia and items have arrived in under a week.

The urgent docs were around 1-2 working days.

  • these are the ones that apparently send back data to chinese data centre's apparently the indian army has banned these for personel

    • but…aren't they moving the service to Singapore and the US now?

    • +5

Apple iphone icloud does same thing, but no one cares it. You know we are all live in internet, in cloud, so no matter which device you use, your personal details will be send to cloud servers.

  • Is ZTE Grand S2 for $289 any good? The specs is the same as an LG G2/G3?

    • I think it runs Baidu Yun OS…

You need to flash custom ROM and GAPPS for ZTE devices, go check in the XDA forums first. These phones are sold in the Chinese market and run non-Google Android.

    • Try MX4, it has international version, ZTE doesnt have Google service.

    "is that an iPhone"

    "no its a Xiaomii"

    "ummm ok" lols all round

    • It's a smartphone with a big screen. Don't they all look alike. LOL

    • The amount of times I've been asked this too…

  • thinking of buying the xjiaomi powerbank from them? Are they selling genuine xiaomi product?

  • What is the shipping like from Taobao? They will ship to Australia?

I'm at work the site is blocked :(

    • +1

I dont think Xioami website ship products to AU, but Taobao do ship stuff to au with reasonable post fee

  • +5

It's cheaper here USD 192.99 with free Singpost shipping and few free gifts.

    • Reputable website?

      • +1

Reasonably good. I have only one purchase from them tho and it was good.

The review here is good too.

  • Just a heads up, the Indian government recently issued a warning to it's Air force personnel to not use Xiaomi phones as they send data back to the manufacturer.

    http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/indian-air-force-asks-pers…

  • I hope they have fixed its problems of keeping connecting to a server in China.

    • +2

Yes, I hope Apple does same thing as well. When I was in roaming oversea, every time when I restart my iphone, it automatically sent a message to apple and I had to pay that roaming message. Anyone know how to disable this?

      • No - easier to switch to Android ;)

  • +2

which merchant should I buy this from? hmm..

    • yeah, worry the same thing. I could not find this model in XIAOMI's website. People been telling there are so many fake XIAOMI in the Chinese market now.

    • Yes, its true, and apple does the same thing. iPhone sends your details to their server as well. I would like to know how to disable it on my iphone.

      • +1

        Leave it in airplane mode…

    • +1

All this is based on an old report brought up solely for fearmongering.

The concerns have long been addressed and have been confirmed fixed by F-Secure a week after the initial report in August:

      http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/technology-other…

F-Secure published another report in a week, saying that Xiaomi had addressed the privacy concerns related to “MIUI Cloud Messaging Platform” by releasing an OTA update which made the messaging service “an opt-in feature, rather than a default one.”

The report confirmed that after the OTA update, the security experts “did not see any data being sent out from the phone.” Also, it stated that on logging into Mi Cloud, “base-64 encoded traffic is now sent.”

The updated report concluded by stating that Mi Cloud data was “now sent over HTTPS rather than HTTP, as seen in our previous testing.”

      • On my Xiaomi Mi 3 I can selectively disable data for each apps. I wonder If I can disable data for their spyware. That would be too funny.

    • Xiaomi is moving its setup to Amazon data centers to help make customers feel safer after recent issues. Non Chinese users will be sitting on servers in US and Singapore Amazon data centers. Its a step in the right direction.

  • Why hasn't anyone brought up about the warranty, what if the phone breaks. Well I guess it's cheap so you can just get another one?

    • seems like a bit of a write off I guess Warranty link. Depending on the shipping costs

During the first 3 Month of Warranty we cover the reutn shipping cost when the items is being sent back to you. Past the 3 month warranty period the return shipping costs are to be paid by you. We will communicate with you the amount of the return shipping cost to be paid prior to the reshipment of your item

    • Ive had mine for 4 months+ with daily use and I have not had a single fault.
Xiaomi is China's most popular smartphone maker for a reason.

  • So if it's from China do you have to root to install Play Store? Don't really know how that works

    • No root needed to install google play

  • +2

This is apparently a pretty fantastic phone, especially at this price. Great screen, good CPU with ample RAM, good camera, massive battery, cheap as chips, if I wanted a budget phablet I'd get this in a heartbeat.

    • And for those exact reasons is why I own one :)

      • Did you ever get an issue where your phone screen goes blank once you make a call and doesn't go back to the original screen?

        • Sorry I have never had that happen to me.

  • Um, so is this much better than the Nexus4?
CPU is roughly the same right?
Same screen res, so depends if you want big or small.
8GB ROM may not be enough to install apps.. I have trouble with 16GB on my Xperia S Ultra.

    • Battery on this is also much bigger 3100mAh vs 2100mAh. haven't heard great things with N4 battery. There's also always microSD expansion

  • Android 4.2?

    • Yes, looks like the preinstalled OS is Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean).

  • Price is down to USD$199.98 (before the voucher code)

Has anyone buy from merimobiles before?

And it shows you can choose colour (black, white, pink), but the spec only specify colour as black though? Also from the review I read, it does't support dual sim, but it says dual sim on this spec.

    • To2c is now $188.89 + Tempered Glass Protector + Silicon Case? Not sure what's going on haha can't decide…

Just don't know how reputable these sellers are.

      • +3

Bought the phone on Monday from To2c and paid for the DHL delivery. Already arrived home today in one piece. Looking forward to setting it up later tonight.

        I ended up paying $228AUD

        • thanks for the update. let us know how it goes after setting up the phone.which version have you selected… the original ROM or the multi-language country.

        • should have chosen the dhl option.

I paid AUD$215.07 for the free and slow shipping.
