Basically the NX300M is a fantastic camera for the price, it doesn't have an EVF, but makes up with a better rear screen in every possible aspect compared to Sony a6000 which has a 3" non-touch LCD 640x480).

NX300M has an optically sharper kit lens than the a6000, plus a faster max shutter speed, as well as a copy of Lightroom 5 worth $100.

NX300M body feels better compared to a6000, feels solid due to aluminium (a6000 is all plastic) and also is more comfy compared to a6000 (just my opinion).

A big selling point is the Samsung range of NX lenses, they are sharper across the board than an equivalent Sony NEX lens, come in larger max apertures and for cheaper!

Sony a6000 main advantages are, does have an EVF, higher burst speed, faster AF (in some situations), variety of audio/video outputs, and slightly higher megapixels and PQ ~5%.

The NX300M also comes in white:

if it wasn't kogan then I might consider buying.

  • "Local Samsung Warranty"

Sounds like it's Aussie stock? If so, great price!! Too bad I'm already invested in sony lenses…

  • Shame it's Kogan.

  • Owned two Samsung camera before, totally nightmares.

    • If your talking about Samsung point and shoots being nightmares, most point and shoots are awefully unreliable, Ive had Olympus, Canon and Sony point and shoots all crap out on me in various ways within a year of extremely light use. Mirrorless cameras are more rugged, and the NX300M has been out a while and had quite a few firmware updates for smooth sailing.

    • I have a Samsung camera in the smart range, not a DSLR, but it's actually pretty good.

Was eyeing an NX camera, but is this one of those with a digital viewfinder? D: I really can't see the point of those, lol.

  • Looking at picking up a smaller camera with a aps-c sensor and was looking at this or the EOS M kit with 22mm STM, 18-55 STM, 90ex flash and EOS m to EF mount. Anyone have any thoughts on which is the better camera. I do have a 6D and some nice glass that would compliment the EOS M, but haven't totally dismissed another system yet. Thoughts appreciated…

    • Sounds like the Canon makes more sense but be sure either way that you really have a need for it. What do you want to do with it that your current gear doesn't? Do you want something more pocketable? Are you looking for a small camera for parties with good high ISO? Are you looking for a smaller camera for travel? Will a point and shoot do for less money?

Buying a camera with no clear purpose when you already have one is not sensible.

      • I'm leaning towards the canon as it does seem great value for the price. I really after something smaller than my DSLR kit for traveling etc but don't want to compromise on image quality too much

what Syousef said as well, however for G.A.S purposes, rumors has it that a new EOS-M is coming soon.

      70D sensor O:

      • i'd love an EOS M with 70D sensor and AF speeds but I couldn't wait any longer and pulled the trigger on the EOS M double lens kit from DWI. Pretty good value I reckon and comes with 90ex flash and EOS M - EF adaptor so i can use my current glass. $457 all up. The Samsung does look pretty sweet though and has some very good reviews.

  • Argh, I can't decide. I want something as small as possible but I'm also a tightarse. The Samsung NX Mini looks great but apparently low light quality isn't as great (plus smaller sensor). Been looking at the Sony A5100 but it's a little bigger (and more expensive).

Really, I'm after the smallest, best camera I can buy for $5-600 with a good lens (and good in low light, blur) for portraits (new baby), that I can buy another lens later for zoom. I don't want to have to retouch in photoshop other than resizing or cropping.

    Sony A5100 - $500 + lens
    Samsung NX3000 - $449 inc lens
    Samsung NX Mini - $200 + lens
    Nikon 1 J4 - $400 + lens
    Panasonic GM1 - $500 + lens

    other?

    • I'm not sure about the whole package overall but if you specifically want nice blur/bokeh the best options from your list are either the Sony A5100 or Samsung NX3000.

Reason being the APS-C sensors in them are physically larger than the other 3 options and (with all else equal) this means a shallower depth of field when shooting.

      • Sorry, I meant to say to reduce blur (optical image stabilisation). I'm also thinking about Black Friday/Cyber Monday specials or whatever ClickFrenzy things might happen locally.

    • I would get the NX300M over all those, why would you even look at the NX3000, its the lower model and its performance is crippled in many areas.

      • Ah sorry typo, meant to say NX300 (as per this deal), I'm sure jzdhgkd did the same thing.

I can't tell if it uses a mechanical shutter or not - I'm after the satisfying 'click' when taking a photo…

        • +1

Its half and half, so you get best of both worlds. Its called electronic first curtain shutter (second part of shutter movement is mechanical), same as the Sony a6000/a5100. It means you get a satisfying click, but still have good speed. No one in their right mind would want a fully mechanical shutter, it is just drawback after drawback. The Sony a7r has a fully mechanical shutter due to technical limitations, this means there are two click sounds for each photo, and there are complaints the vibrations from the shutter blurs zoomed photos as well as the shutter not being fast enough to capture the point of focus when capturing movement.

I am also in the same boat. I hate carrying around a big camera, so mostly stick to my mobile these days! This is very tempting, but even though compact, don't think it is pocket friendly, especially when you add lens + flash!

Time to upgrade my good old Canon A650, I am leaning towards Canon G7X or Sony RX100 now :-)

      Any suggestions are welcome..

  • Found on http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/samsung-nx300m-mirro… for $419, different lens though, looks better??. Jbhifi has it for $699 with $250 cashback

    Thoughts TRANCE?

That eglobal one has an older version of the kit lens, the new one I listed is much better. New one has power zoom and is way more compact at half the length, this is achieved by utilizing 4 ED low distortion glass elements usually reserved for more expensive lenses, so its also sharper, its a much more sophisticated lens, and the wider 16mm fov is much more useful than the 55mm long end of the older lens.

Samsung really went all out with their entire NX lens line up, and I would easily say Samsung make the best value lenses in the entire camera industry, not a single one of their lenses can be beat on price/performance, which is quite an achievement.

For example, Sony's a6000 kit lens, while similar size to the NX300m, does not use low distortion glass, which means it has lower sharpness and higher distortions, it is not even as good as the older samsung kit lens, or even the original samsung kit lens before that! There have been 3 samsung NX kit lenses to date, Samsung seems to be always looking to improve, even if they are already better than the competition, but Sony, nope…

The JB hifi listing is not really cash back, you just get a $250 voucher to use at JB and the voucher expires in a under 3 months. If you are fine with that then go for it.

I prefer the Kogan deal personally.

    • I pulled the trigger! Thanks all for your help.

Now…for a good deal for a 64GB SDXC Class 10 - while I'm trusting Kogan to deliver this, I don't think their SD cards are trustworthy.

      • The best performance 64gb SD card is the Sandisk Extreme Pro, for about $120 from various places. Be sure your getting the Extreme Pro rather than the standard Extreme version if you want the best write performance.

Maximum write speeds translate into shorter down time after taking burst photo's or a movie clip.

If you don't really need max write speeds then the best value to performance SD cards would be the 64gb Toshiba Exceria for $60 or the 64gb Transcend Ultimate for around $50-$60. These two SD cards beat the standard Sandisk extreme cards in both performance and price!

        • The $36 delivered Kingston deal here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170313) not good/fast enough? I guess it's write speeds that are most important, what write speeds are the Transcend, Toshiba, and Kingston capable of?

        • +1

          @aimbot:
The sandisk Extreme pro is 90mbs write which is the highest possible speed for class 10 uhsi, the toshiba exceria and transcend ultimate are 60mbs write, which makes them good value for dollar, the kingston sd card only complies with the minimum class 10 speed, which is a measly low 10mbs.

          This is a good deal:

FYI COTD has it for $499 + p/h, can use $8 Catch of The Day Voucher to have free shipping (postage fee is $8.01 for Melbourne metro). It's $50 more than Kogan, but it is not grey import I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong). IMO it is a very good price for local stock.

    • +1

I'm under the impression that the Kogan listing is also Aussie stock as it has 12 month local Samsung warranty.

    • +1

By the way, I asked Kogans senior support team and they confirmed the NX300M is indeed Aussie stock and not a grey import.

    Now $429 with free shipping.
