  • I am fairly sure Surface Pro 3 deals are rare.

Though that being said, I think it would be beneficial for those people who might be able to help you if you write down the CPU spec and the SSD size that your uncle is looking for. The price range changes accordingly to the things I've mentioned.

Also, as a Surface Pro 1 user, I would recommend Surface Pro 2 as well, which you can find deals much easily.

  • If you're going cheap as possible then I would be getting an SP2. What of the SP3 is required to warrant paying extra in your circumstances?

The clearance SP2 256Gb with cover for $1058 at HN (was $988 briefly) or a SP3 128Gb no cover for $1088. Weigh up what you want to compromise on. Price, keyboard our hardware.

  • from what i gathered, it is for school work. compulsory for ~3 years so it should last that long.

dont think i3 or i5 will matter. I think just trying to find a good deal w/ keyboard

i have seen sp2 and already recommended it but just seeing if along the month till christmas any good deals popping up which
would be worth the upgrade to sp3

  • Student discount direct with MS would get price pretty close to that for surface pro 3 64gb + keyboard

  • I've heard mixed opinions on SP3, people were talking about how the back paint actually get scratched really easily. I heard people talk about how N-trig is not as good as Wacom in terms of writing and drawing. Well, some people were also complaining about the throttling issues with the SP3 as well.

Though these being said, for document editing and light use, SP3 doesn't have that much competition.
The screen ratio is really good for documents, battery lasts long as well. Also, it is lighter that SP2.

That being said, it's not a bad device, but I'd recommend SP2 over SP3 considering the price and everything.

  • Is it worth buying overseas. Wife's going go be in US in December - January.

    • +1

I own the surface pro 1, so it may not apply to the surface pro 3.

I am not too sure about the SP3, but I remember people talking about how Surface series is actually fairly cheap in Australia considering GST (US price is before-tax price so I've heard), import tax and the exchange rate. That was when the first one came out.

Also, surface pro 3 was not available on the MS store (24/11/2014), just in case you wanted to buy it from them.

Though in terms of servicing, I remember people talking about how the Surface tablet itself is worldwide warranty and the accessories, such as pen, for pro 1 at least, and charger fall under local warranty. I am not sure whether the covers are under worldwide or local warranty. They send you replacement accessories if they break down, you don't even need to return them. For your tablet, it is 1 year warranty.

I actually suggest talking to the MS store personnel online about warranties and stuff.

In terms of their service quality for my surface pro 1, I was fairly impressed. They replaced my charger 3 times (wires and connection issues), and they replaced my wacom pen.

I hope this helps you in some way or another.

      • Thanks it does help.

        • I am sort of worried because my knowledge is slightly limited to Surface Pro 1 series. The bit about tablet warranty was from a forum that I usually go to, from those who bought Surface Pro 3 from US at somewhere else. I'd assume that the procedure is similar.

The pen have definitely changed from 1 to 3, it's more electronicky (if that is a word.) It takes up batteries so they may have changed the policy on pens. So you might want to check that bit up with the MS store people.
