  • $399 delivered (by Kogan) is about as good as you'll find it locally (unless you can get free shipping). MSY have it for that price in store too. So the discount of $50 isn't too bad.
That said, I'm a bit iffy about online — especially international — pc hardware purchases; too many RMAs in my past to not buy from somewhere I can walk into.

    • I guess. Kogan and MSY aren't exactly known for stellar support though, I'd risk it for $50

      • Checkout states "AUD 362.66", revoked +ve as you can get within $20 locally…

Click those Staticice links and you'll see none of them will be under $400 when shipping is added or their bundle requirements aren't met.

        • @Anderz: Most have local stores for pickup…

          their bundle requirements aren't met.

bundle requirements apply when you try to buy OEM software not individual parts…

          @buzzlight9:

Yes, and even then the cheapest offer on Static Ice is $395 if you live in NSW and are willing to drive to Hornsby, which is 40mins from the CBD on a tolled road.

Like I said, click the links.

          Click. The. Freaking. Links.

        • @Anderz: Ah yep my bad, but CompAlliance is quite good bought some stuff from them before. They've got it for $394 pickup, for the $30~ difference I'd still stay local was my point all along… :)

      • Fair enough, though for the record, I've returned items to both without issues.
MSY multiple times in person, and each time I've either received a replacement within 2 days (when it was faulty within weeks of purchasing), or they've sent it off to the manufacturer and they've replaced/fixed it within a few weeks (if it's warranty related). No dramas.

        • Head down to greenboxit's Pirie Street store tomorrow and grab one…, or visit allneeds and they should happily price match. Help the little guys… ;)

        • I frequent Allneeds often, actually. They're on my walk home.

(Also, I already have this processor)

  • I have this processor. It is very rare that any issues will arise with the CPU unless you stuff around with its installation (ie you don't install it properly into the motherboard and bend the pins).

    • And even then it's more likely that the motherboard will have problems than the CPU. Remember to always use anti-static wristbands when handling components!

  • The K series are designed for overclocking, so if you have no intention of doing that, buying a K series is probably pointless. Additionally, you'll want to grab a better cooler than the boxed one for overclocking.

    • +2

Without the appended K, just to clarify for anyone wondering, you don't have the option to overclock at all.

Keep in mind also that overclocking these days can be as simple as installing the software that came with your motherboard and hitting the modern-day "TURBO" button on the GUI, at which point you'll never have to do it again. The stock cooler should be fine to handle this automated approach.

For the extra $40, I think the K series is worth it, even for those who don't care to do more than that. In terms of added horsepower, it can easily extend the life of your CPU a generation.

    • +3

this time intel give higher base /turbo clock (+10%) for i7 K series compared to the non-K series. so even if you're not planning to OC the price difference would still worth it.

      comparison:
      i7 4790K vs i7 4790
Higher turbo clock speed 4.4 GHz vs 4 GHz
Higher clock speed 4 GHz vs 3.6 GHz

  • Wait for Broadwell. Haswell is getting very old and tired.
