1800W Shop Vac Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner (60L Capacity) - $149 at Masters (Save $140)

70

I'm in the market for something similar to clean my ceiling cavity before laying insulation.

This is considerably cheaper than some of its smaller capacity/less powerful siblings and ShopVac is a fairly reputable brand.

Hell, Jonathan Coulton even wrote a song about it!

This is not the vacuum you're looking for.

      Por que?

    • Care to elaborate ?

      • It looks like R2.

        • All shop vacs look like r2d2…

        • Whoops accidentally clicked associated box… how do I get rid of it ?

@jaykay: it's a quote from Star Wars. That is what he is alluding to. Having to explain a joke is always painful.

      • Unless your roof space is empty and you just want to remove light dust then maybe but you probably need something more like this http://www.ceilingalert.com/

No insulation in there ATM. Just dust, spiders and leaf litter - listed in descending order by mass in my roof :)

Have been quoted $900-$1100 to clean it (80sq but has various vents etc in the way). Think I'll do it myself and go on holiday with the savings instead…

@mad__llama: The 20L will do just fine. Will save yourself even more money.

        • Thanks for the info. Will have to be the 20L anyway as this large beastie won't fit through the manhole into the roof.

          @mad__llama:

I was going to say check the manhole size.

I've done the same job myself, and it's not a summer chore.

Wow these have rocketed up in price. I saw the huge price tag in the post and had to investigate. Last year I bought the 60L 1600W shop vac at masters for $59. That was the normal price. I look now and its $249.

I dont know what happened but shop vac tripled its prices.

    • I was thinking the same thing!

sure my higher end 30L model was on special when I bought it for $59….. but the orig price was only $100-$120 or so

now they want $219 for the base model of what I had

    • I think it's because this one has a stainless steel tank rather than a plastic one like some cheaper models.

      • I bought a plastic tank one a couple of years back, it lasted maybe three months whilst I renovated my house. It lost its auction strength altogether though, I think the seals went.

it was an extra $20 for the SS tank - it didn't have the top-mounted powerpoint though which I wanted in the smaller $59 version

        $79 and originally $150

Wow, I was just using a 20L one today for vacuuming a section of my ceiling, prepping for laying down insulation. Never thought I'd see someone else post about it on Ozbargain.

    • How often do you need to empty the tank with the 20L when cleaning the ceiling cavity. I'd rather not be dragging it up and down the ladder every half hour…

You don't have to because the dust goes into the paper bag, you can just pull that down (in a bucket or shopping bag). I use a Triton dust collector bucket between the vacuum & nozzle, it captures all the fluff, big bits and most dust, so the bag doesn't fill up very quickly.
You can also (if super careful, as very messy) put a plastic bag over the Shop Vac dust bag opening & empty most of the dust into it, getting more milage out of it (though packs of 5x bags aren't very dear).
Warning, if you have a perfectionist streak and/or have a 1-2cm layer of dust like me, it takes a long time :-(

  • we use one for our whole house, 1250w, 20L Ryobi which was $49 or so. Only difference is this produces a lot less heat, is much lighter and on carpet instead of going over 1-2 times this is 2 times (we have a long haired pet).

    $49 vs $500 + and I cant wet vac with a dyson.

  • I used a leaf blower to clean mine. The respirator was well worth the investment.

  • I need to wet some areas of carpet with boiling water to kill of carpet moth eggs. Probably only need the 10L unit but is it worth getting the 20L for the extra attachments?

    • What about a hand held steam cleaner?

      • Could you please provide a link to an example product?

I have a big corded steam mop for hard floors but don't want to use it on the carpet.
