CBIGXMAS

Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook, Core i7-4510U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Backlit FHD, Win 8.1.

Not a bad price, considering the processor and storage.

Normally $1999, although that's possibly a bit of an exaggeration!

Seems odd to have an XPS with integrated graphics rather than dedicated for that price.

Ultrabooks don't usually have dedicated graphics at this screen size.

The XPS series isn't supposed to be a normal ultrabook, it is meant to be a high performance device, and I have to agree with the guy above, when I see XPS I automatically assume dedicated graphics…not they you are wrong, but his point is quite valid.

  • it's coming up as $1599 not $1399.

Edit: I assumed the coupon had already been applied but it hadn't been…. ! it's all good.

I strongly recommend not to buy this laptop. There are massive coil whining issues with this laptop and Dell won't do anything about it.

    • I have this unit and know 3 others with it as well, and no issues.

      • but how many do you know WITH the issue?

    • I've had an extensive look at Dell's forums and Whirlpool. A very large number of users have this problem, Dell said that no computer arriving after 5 Sept would have this issue but they all still do..

This is a deal breaker for me. Very disappointing, Dell.

      • further to my post yesterday - I spoke to Dell's sales people who said no more units had this problem. I pointed out that users as late as mid-november had complained about getting new units with the coil whine issue. He then suggested I ring tech services for more information. The number he supplied me with gave a message saying that I was calling outside of office hours (10.30am on a Monday?) so I called another number and spoke to a guy in a call centre overseas. He had never heard of the coil whine issue.

I'm not feeling confident at all that Dell has fixed this issue, especially if their tech support staff haven't even heard of it before. So, I'm recommending people stay away from this machine altogether until Dell get their act together. A real shame.

        • I'm in the same boat. Spoke with Dell's sales support - they hadn't heard of the issue either. He spoke with tech support and they admitted they "did have that problem with some customers in the past and that was fixed for those customers and we do not have any such problems currently" … "but we still cannot guarantee that as it is an electronic (device)". So my confidence has waned as well.

In the meantime, I've found an ASUS with similar specs, and a better graphics card for $150 more. So I might go with that now instead…

    • Yes, I'm deliberating whether it's worth the risk now too. Some have stopped the whining by switching the keyboard backlight off, some by disconnecting the right speaker, and some don't seem to have had the problem at all.

I wonder if I could ask for a guaranteed refund prior to purchasing, should I end up with a whining machine.

The only thing I am fairly certain of is that there is currently nothing else out there that has similar specifications for the same price…

      • Dell have a 15-day Change of Mind return policy (you may have to pay for return shipping [?] )…

The base rMBP at 10% off would probably be the closest that I know of (really wish there was more competition in the ultrabook segment here). About the same price, half the storage capacity and an i5 instead of i7, but with a 2560x1600 resolution instead of FHD. Currently debating between the two, myself, though I think Apple might win out because of its after sales support.

Wish I could find an XPS 13 in person to make a more direct comparison. Damn it, Dell.

  • is this the cheapest it has been or does Dell have it at this price on sale all the time? I'm only holding back because of no SD card slot.

    • I've watched this laptop for a while, as well as a few others that are similar. Dell has never gone this cheap before. In my opinion it's probably the best value at the moment by quite a bit for 13-14 inch ultrabooks. Good looking as well IMO and good materials.

This is their top range model in the XPS 13 set, so it's a solid machine for the size. Although I do suspect a new set of XPS machines to be coming in the not too distant future, as these have been out for a while now.

      • yeah just been doing some research and 12 months old. some other manufacturers have Broadwell ultrabooks out already.

        • Those are all Core M based and won't be as powerful, FWIW - they're focused on heat and power efficiency

        • don't really need the power - just had to turn down for an extra $1000 over the i5/128!
