  • To get an idea how powerful this machine is I thought I'd try running Minecraft on this: on lowest settings it plays smooth as silk for a few seconds, then lags for half a second or so. However, the real problem is the UI.

There is no metro app for Minecraft. So you have to use the classic interface which is terrible for touch (why do they insist on putting the tiny close button right next to the tiny maximise button?). The Minecraft "touchscreen" interface is worse, almost useless on a tablet. You can look around and move down, by digging down. No fancy pants features like moving forwards, let alone sidewards or back. Now that Microsoft has bought Minecraft, I would thought they could integrate it better with the tablet OS they are pushing… Minecraft is way more usable on iOS/Android.

Now you could easily use the OTG cable to connect it to an old keyboard and mouse and get a cheap and not too shabby mini desktop… but the supplied cables don't let you charge it at the same time. Also windows settings won't let me step down the display to the native resolution, so the display is permanently a bit fuzzy.

TL;DR this is a great deal for a geek project (plex server), or maybe something to casually read web pages and play videos on. However, as a general purpose tablet it is quite flawed. The new $49 android tablets would be less frustrating, even for running some Microsoft owned software. At $88 I am not sad I bought it, I am just trying to figure out what I'll actually use it for.

iOS and Android are the equivalent of Windows Phone though, not Windows 8. Windows 8 isn't a tablet OS, it's a PC OS that is only now in the process of becoming a multi-purpose OS. A Windows Store version of Minecraft is undoubtedly in the works.

For your native resolution problem - desktop -> right click/long press -> screen resolution -> Advanced Settings -> List All Modes -> 1024x600

It's a perfect plex viewer, web browser, and windows store app machine from my few days with it so far. Haven't tried too much else yet, will install XBMC and try the HDMI out when I get around to it. Then I want to try its Miracast functionality too, but need to get a receiver.

  • I'm having major download speed issues with this tablet.

On my desktop I get speeds up to 1.3 MB/s, but on this tablet I get max 70 KB/s. Signal quality is at full 5 bars and connected to router at 150 Mbps.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

    Anyone else experiencing this issue?
