Rather pay a little bit extra and grab the 3G/32G variant from DWI

    • Fair point, but can we be sure the one from DWI supports ALL the 2G, 3G and 4G (current and future) band frequencies?

I am really asking, as I am trying to buy a LG G3 for my wife as a Christmas present.

      • You need to check the specific model number that DWI is selling and look it up @ GSMArena. After getting the band spec for the DWI model, compare it with the Aussie bands @ Whirlpool.

  • you can claim GST too. DWI would be grey import

  • +4

tempting. want to get rid of the galaxy, become very frustrated with it lately. but kinda want a smaller phone like the Z3 compact.

    • Always great to see someone dump Samsung.

      • +2

As long as you are not an iPhone lover, I am with you

        • I'm a Nexus lover. But anything but Samsung shit is fine.

        • +3

          @PainToad:

Tell me about it. My wife is a Nexus lover too, and I am proud of her. Basically our household is an apple free zone ;)

    • root the phone and flash it with a rom like omega, or cyanogen mod. If you brick it, or don't like the change, time for a new phone :)

  • +3

Rather get the 3G ram model.

  • +5

Anyone found a link to Sony Xperia Z3 compact in this sale? I can't find it.

    • +1

+1 from me. A Z3 or Z3c will do just fine for me. Battery life on these phones (Z3c especially) has sold me.

    • Z3 compact best phone around IMO just a bit over priced. $539 at Sony store is a bit too much.

      • It's $699 on the Sony website?

        • Someone on ozbargain posted in the Sony sale that it was 539 at Sony store normally (retail store not online) and I know for a fact it is $539 employee price as well. I haven't checked personally as it's still a bit much for me.

        • @nubzy: Not sure about that price, I got the promotional email and rang the store and got told it was $699 with a bonus wireless charger.

      • How can you put a price on the best phone around?

        • +5

The OZBargain way is to Start at $0 and go upwards very very slowly!

    • same, under 500 id snap it up

  • +1

I have been looking for a good android phone in this sale but wanted to keep it to around $300 or so.
    Thoughts?

    • -3

what about lg g pro 2, im selling one. pm me.

    • I bought the Moto G 2nd Gen from DSE when it was on sale for about $228 and am happy with it.
It's about $214 from TGG with 20% off, which I think is great bang for bucks.

    • Go the Moto G. Best phone you can buy at that price range. $220 with the CBIGXMAS code.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorola-XT1068-Moto-G-2nd-Gen-Un…

      • +3

        Good value, 3G only though.

        • Yeah. Deal breaker for some.
Me? I'm a patient person :) I'd rather the specs of the 2nd gen over the 4G speed.

    • -1

Nexus 4 refurb cheaper and better than Moto G.

  • Don't buy the 2gb version unless you know how, and plan to root it and flash an ASOP rom. The stock LG one is horrible on the 2gb variant.

    • why is it horrible on the 2gb variant?

      • It lags

        • Don't know why you got downvoted, it does.

    • +1

What's a good aosp rom? Are you currently doing this for this phone?

      • I liked PA. Its pretty straight forward to try and really only you know what you like.

    • +2

Is the 2gb really that bad? I've been really happy with my G2 (2gb) and I regularly have 10+ browser tabs and several apps (maps, pulse, etc) open- never any lag whatsoever.

Keen to grab a G3 but kinda thought the 2gb would be fine for my needs - happy to be told otherwise.

Also, are there good Roms for the Aussie G3?The Aussie G2 (d802T) has no support whatsoever… :(

      • I think the main reason that it lags is the QHD resolution (with only 2 GB RAM), which G2 doesn't have.

      • It depends on which firmware you are on. Alot of times ppl try it in the store and its running on older firmware since they dont bother updating it.

I have 16Gb version and V10L firmware and absolutely no lag issue. LG has done a great job releasing these little updates.

For anyone that says it lags i ask what version firmware and these ppl usually have no idea. Which goes to show how much they know.

        • Thanks hippo,

That helps a lot - LG have been great with updates and refinements over the last couple of years.

I didn't think the screen would be THAT taxing (noting that I'm not an Android gamer) on the chipset.

          Cheers.

        • @xdirex:

All smartphones are pretty bad on juice depending on how you use it. Ie. Watch poorly encoded movie that doesnt take advantage of hw acceleration while walking outdoor means cpu and display is draining the juice alot more than if you just listened to music with screen off. U could drain 10% vs 1% in those conditions respectively in 15-20 minutes.

So be smart in how you use the phone. Not gaming doesnt mean you will have lots of juice.

I am a pretty heavy user. 3.5GB of data a month. 8 gmail accounts for syncing. Youtube on wifi. Watching 720p movies and tv on my 45 minute commute each way and probably 2 hrs of browsing on data each day and G3 lasts me just enough for one day.

        • @hippo2s:

Yes, pretty up to speed with general (in)efficiencies of running android and where to take advantage of particular hardware configurations. I have to say that as processor speeds have plateaued my single most important spec is web browsing battery life - I read A LOT on my phone and have a considerable amount of screen on time.

Like many others, I'd have been happy with a 1080p variant of the G3 purely for the efficiency of the panels, but can appreciate they're going to keep pushing ahead.

After battery life, it's really all about screen to bevel ratio. I've personally been happy with LG's underdog position against Samsung and cramming fantastic specs into small handsets.

My last few phones have been Optimus 4X HD > Optimus G Pro > G2 > and G3 next.

        • @xdirex:

I would love the super battery saver mode on Samsung S5, the one that turns screen to black and white, reloads stuff from memory and just run bare bone to give you basic functionality and stretch the battery life.

  • My mother has a cracked screen/broken digitizer only after a few weeks of having it, anyone suggest the best way to repair it? DIY options might be a bit hard. Melbourne

    • -6

If you can't fix the phone, fix your mom.

      • Was that meant to be funny? Are you 12 years old?

        • 12yrs older than ur mom, kid.

    • Does the LCD turn on?

      • LCD turns on, works fine in seeing everything clearly, just the hairline crack (not noticeable unless looking hard) but digitizer doesn't work at all above crack and very hard to register touches below the crack.

    • find a reputable service center, be prepared to spend at least $80, depending on the phone model and brand. Samsung usually cheaper to fix than sony, especially waterproof sony phone.

      • -1

LG G3 is not a waterproof model, cheapest price I have found so far is $179. I expect it to be more expensive because it is a 4K screen and the phone is quite new.

        • I said waterproof sony phone.

  • So I've got a Oneplus One but thinking of swapping to a G3 - anyone owned both phones - which do you prefer?

    • I too have purchased an OPO. I will never relinquish it.

      • so how is OPO?

        • OPO is good but there are a few issues with it. Coming from a G2 I'm not used to the larger screen which makes one handed use difficult. I also got fond of the LG G3 software ( I flashed my G2 with G3rom).

OPO's bigger screen is noticeable over the G2 due to hardware buttons

Other things I noted - G2 feels much better in the hand. It feels more premium.

The G2 gorilla screen 2 is smoother to touch and use than the OPO gorilla 3 screen which has more friction and not as smooth. The difference is easy to detect.

The vibration on the OPO sucks in comparison to the G2 - think its either low quality vibration chip or OPO's housing but has odd resonances. Sounds and feels cheap when it vibrates.

        • Super late reply, I've never felt more satisfied with a phone more than I have with OPO, The G3 does have a better screen, which is really cool, that where the superiority ends though.

Most shit you'll read is subjective, but what is not, is that it's a shit load cheaper, it's not one of the big companies, that after releasing a single update they (profanity) off and focus on the next flagship, the OPO community is big, the company is small and most def needs support.

    • +1

quite a few reviews comparing the two out there if you're willing to google….

    • +1

yep had both, think they are both awesome, both with strengths and weaknesses. Tough one. Probably not a huge upgrade getting the LG. Camera is better, and size is awesome considering still a 5.5. Opo feels good in the hand too. Splitting hairs really. Both awesome.
Got rid of Opo because of touch issues. Wouldn't register keystrokes every time which got boring really quick. If that isn't an issue with your, can't really fault the Opo.

      • +1

G3 is LG's flagship third gen by an electronics giant. OPO is a new startup by an upcoming chinese brand. I put my money with a sure win and not a wildcard.

        Do google search…plenty of comparisons.

    • -3

Well I haven't but I'll give you a quick rundown. Unless you want the smaller bezels DO NOT swap. Yes the warranty on Oneplus is godawful, but specs wise, you've got:

      A fantastic 1080p panel VS A crappy 1440p panel

3GB of RAM VS 2GB of RAM

64GB (I'm assuming) of eMMC 5.0 VS 16GB of eMMC 4.5 (although their is Micro SD)

3100mAh battery on more efficient screen VS 3000mAh battery on very inefficient screen (although it is removable)

      • +1

How is 1440 display crappy compared to 1080? PS i would bet OPO display is made by LG. Oh guess who makes G3?

        3GB RAM…so get the 32GB G3?

        I have 128GB microsd in mine…boom!

The battery in G3 lasts more than 1 day and i am a pretty heavy user. So moot point. The difference isnt going to make you need to charge any more often than owning a OPO.

        • No the quality of the panel is bad on the G3. Poor contrast, sharpening halo and low brightness. 1080p in mobile is a more developed technology. The panel on the Opo is much better. Actually JDI makes the Opo panel. Plus this deal has 2GB of RAM, I was talking about it. Anyway internal storage kills micro SD in performance, plus KitKat has godawful support for micro SD.

        • Fair enough, everyone has their preferences i guess so i don't agree with your comments. And i am biased obviously.

For example Internal memory vs microsd speed has never been an issue to me. I value the ability to take out the card and use a usb adapter to transfer quickly than slow 2.0 usb cable.

Display: LG the leader in OLED and IPS display yes i have heard of them. JDI who? What technical innovation have they made for display industry?

Kitkat and external stprage support u mean the restriction to write for apps? Easily fixed with root.

        • +1

@hippo2s: Well I can't say I argue with you and I respect your opinions. But JDI is a massive innovator and makes plenty displays for companies. They constantly push the technical envelope while LG, Sammy and Sharp are still racing to the top of the pixel count. JDI is a joint company consisting of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi, so seems like you may have heard of them.

And no. Sammy are the king of OLEDs :P

        • @deanylev:

So JDI sounds like a large company. Fact is OPO have been found to have yellow band issue, touchscreen not registering issue and dead pixel issues. Pretty well documented http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/oneplus-one-problems/

G3 has been said to have oversharpening jaggie issue too tho.

        • @hippo2s:

How bout we say they both suck at some things and exceed at others.. Period

        • @Dezeption:

Sure. Overall i dont agree 1440p display as a negative. Thats like saying a V8 in a car is a negative compared to V6. Yes it uses more fuel but you do get more performance out of it.

        • @hippo2s:

Damit you used a car metaphor making me wanting to start a debate…………..

        • @hippo2s: Interestingly enough, this is Oneplus' problem. While the yellow band is gone, it was due to not letting the glue dry on the displays, because they wanted to rush them out. The touch issue? Also Oneplus' fault, allegedly due to the digitizers touching the magnesium chassis. JDI just makes the panels. It's a fantastic panel. And ya G3's oversharpening isn't my cup of tea, LG shouldn't pull that crap.

        • @hippo2s: No you don't understand what I'm saying. The G3's panel is bad. It's contrast is horrible. It's brightness is low and you don't get 'more performance' as it looks no different to 1080p. It's like having a V8 and a V6 and they both perform the same, but the V8 uses more fuel, has some weird smell along the way and sounds funny.

        • @deanylev:

Haha i get what you mean. No disagreement here in regards to more power usage yet for 98% of the time you are getting no more benefit than 1080p. I have no mrdia higher than 1080p for example.

And who wouldnt love a bit more juice at the end of the day by not having the video deal with those extra 33% unbeneficial pixels.

I still feel the OPO is inferior to G3's panel. But thats like a Ford vs Holden debate. :p

Caveat. I am not lucky enough to have seen an OPO in person with their stupid invite only mkting. I know u can buy them now. Opinion solely based on what i have read and yeah…i do troll tech review sites.

        • @hippo2s:

I'd just like to add that I'd bet my money on the OPO screen being inferior to the G3. It's inferior to the G2 and it's noticeable!.

Colors on the G2 appear natural and pop. OPO on the other hand appears dull. G2's display is THE best display I've seen in my many years of owning phones and I've owned quite a few (more than I can count).

OPO used to have a screen calibration option which would have come in handy to fix that dull / washed out look, however, OPO decided to drop that in the latest build - BAD choice OPO.

Screen wise G2 >>>> OPO and yes I have both phones right in front of me.

        • @djevoultion:

LOL so the recommendation we can agree on is to buy a LG G2. Those should be very affordable now too so all the better!

        • @hippo2s: haha glad we could come to an agreement mate

  • I ordered the note 4 from TGG but haven't picked it up yet. Can I cancel my order without any penalty?

Thinking to get the LG G3 instead; the price difference between the two phones is just too great for the ozbargainer in me.

    • Yep you should be able to cancel your order or you could sell it to Ozbargainers at the price you paid for it.

LG G3 is nearly half the price of the Note 4 and they are both great phones!

      • did they sell out of the note 4s already?

i'm worried the note 4 will be too big for me and i don't think i'll ever use the stylus. so LG G3 it is!!

    • I'd suggest to go for the Note 4. Sure its expensive but this 2 gigs version is laggy and the screen on Note 4 is better along with better battery life.

      • Depends whether you like Touchwiz too I guess. The Note 4 is larger than the G3 and is likely to have greater depreciation. The G3 has received rave reviews and is likely to hold its value better in years to come compared to the Note 4.

        • Touchwiz isn't too bad anymore. Flies honestly on the Note 4. That is until your memory is full. LG G3 I would only buy the S805 version. S801 + 1440p display = :(

          G3 sure is pretty though…

        • @deanylev: Thats good to know. I think the 1440p was overkill on the G3 and a full hd panel would have been sufficient. I hate how companies feel the need to bump up all the specs at the cost of battery life and the OS operating smoothly.

        • @ShamelessBargains: I agree totally. My Xperia Z2's 1080p looks absolutely amazing. I think 1440p is only necessary on either pentile matrix displays or displays that are 6" and above. Anything else is pointless. The G3's display made dozens of sacrifices. And all it had to show for it were unecessary amounts of pixels. G3's battery life wasn't great and gaming and navigating was choppy. Snapdragon 805 fixes all of this though :D

    • +1

Remember. You get what you pay for.

    • If you can carry big phone and need stylus…Note 4. Otherwise G3. After all the spec comparisons you should think about ur usage. Ie.do you prefer writing over typing? Do you need to write foreign characters? Do you need to draw and take hand written notes? If yes then Note 4. Otherwise G3 is a more usable package. Slimmer and light more phone than phablet altho still pretty big.

      • +1

thanks mate i'm pretty much set on cancelling my order for the note 4 and ordering the LG G3 instead.

the form factor of the LG G3 is very impressive. and a flagship phone for $413 after cashrewards and TRS is an absolute steal.

        • +1

That's great buying! $413 is so cheap for a 2014 flagship by a mainstream brand. The local 2 years warranty is the icing on the cake I reckon :)

        • Enjoy your G3 mate. It's a fantastic phone and that price is an absolute steal.

        • Use the leftover money to buy some accessories like glass screen protector and 128GB micosd.

        • @hippo2s:

just placed my order. is a glass screen protector really required given these things already have gorilla glass? if so, which one do you recommend?

          is a case required?

128GB microSD might be overkill for me. I'm thinking 32GB or 64GB might be sufficient for some videos, music and photos. How important is microSD card speed in this situation? Is it worthwhile to get a Sandisk Extreme Pro?

        • +1

          @dajackal:

I like to resell my phones after 6-12 months when i move on. Having the glass protector from day 1 means at the end of my time with it i can peel it off and promise the buyer the display is totally mint. So worth it for that alone.

Check on ebay. There are plenty. Mine was a no name and was $15. I prefer glass as it looks totally stealthy and glass is better to touch than plastic films.

There are microsd speed test online. i saw a test that said smart phones doesnt take advantage of speed faster than Sandisk Ultra (30MB/s). So i recommend Sandisk Ultra (there are 30 and 40MB/s variants) or Samsung EVO which i think is 45MB/s.

I made the mistake of cheeping out on a kingston 64GB which i jumped on here at ozb.. It was 100x and class 10 but in fact has slow sequential write so when watching 720p movie and sometimes with music the media pauses for half a second. Have 128GB Sandisk now but it is an overkill and pricing isnt at the sweet spot atm.

Given the chance again i would buy Samsung EVO 64GB which is great value atm on amazon.

The faster speed may not be useful in phone or over usb cable transfer but i often take out the card and use an usb adapter to transfer faster. I like 128GB as i can load it with media once a week. :) once again…buy something that suits how you will use it.

        • @hippo2s:

Thanks mate, I ended up getting the Nillkin Tempered Glass Protector, Ringke Slim Case, and finally the Samsung EVO 64GB from Amazon.

Now…just need to wait for TGG to get some stock of the phone itself!!!! :(

        • @dajackal:

Good setup! Hopefully by the time you get the phone update to Lollipop is officially out.

  • good guys not so good with no stock and taking preorders from ebay sale.

  • Got this bad boy recently (3gb ram/32gb internal gray import). It craps big ones all over my old phone (2 year old S4).

    • Where did you buy your grey import from? Kogan, DWI, or?

I am also considering grey import, but I am not sure the grey import ones support ALL the 2G, 3G and 4G (current and future) band frequencies.

Can you shed some light mate?

      • I got one for $509 from a Taiwanese seller during ebay's 20% site wide sell some months ago.
