Installing SSD hard drive in a brand new laptop

I've just bought a new Dell laptop with the standard spinning hard drive.

I have previously installed an SSD drive in my old laptop and I plan on bringing this drive over to the new laptop.

I'm just curious about how people feel about voiding their warranties by doing this. If I ever need the warranty, is it possible to reverse the process without Dell knowing that I've fiddled with the guts?

  • fyi, dell doesn't give you a license key for windows, its in the bios or something.

i just did it, if it stuffs up, swap the hdd back and hope for the best.

    • I didn't know about the license key deal. So I should probably use a program to clone the existing hard drive drive and migrate it over to the new ssd.

I'd swap in the SSD. Worst thing that can happen is something goes wrong (unlikely) - the swap it back and return the laptop.

Just take a little care not to damage anything when doing the swap (shouldn't be hard) and be happy with your snappier performance.

    Yes, perfectly possible.

Dell won't void your warranty for opening a standard access panel to swap parts out. But if you have something go wrong with it, they will try and blame the new part… so don't tell them!

  • Thanks guys. I'm reassured now. I think I'll take the chance and do the swap over.

    • Hi
I assume its a Win8 machine with UEFI boot.
That means HD n bios are locked against each other.
Best way is to clone to disk to SSD. Did that recently using drive clone from farstone painless free n works.
      Cheers

  • Anything that is user upgradable does not void warranty. They can only refuse to service without reinstalling the original parts. There is no way for them to tell either.

On a side note. If you create recovery media from the dell OS then it can be used to reinstall the OS on another drive. You can also download a dell version of whatever OS you have installed from a torrent site and it will work. As mentioned the key comes from the bios so as long as the disk is from dell origin then it will work. I have done this multiple times on multiple dell devices.
