  • How do I know if I need 32bit or 64bit?
I'm assuming this is what I need to transfer all my crap from my old pc to my new shinny "PCByte" deal?

    • +2

Whatever version your OS supports. If in doubt, get the 32bit.

      • +12

        OzBargain protocol applies:
"If in doubt get both!" :-)

    • +2

You need to open Control Panel click on System and on the page it will say System type:
Here it will tell you if your operating system is 32 bit or 64 bit.
Yes, this software will help you transfer your "crap" from your old PC to your new PC.

      • +3

Or, as a shortcut, if you have the 'Computer' icon on your desktop, just right click it and go to properties.

        • +1

          Or, Windows key + <Pause>/<Break>

    • i was able to buy both versions

      • First time for everything

        • HAS ANYONE LOADED IT YET? ANY BLOATWARE INCLUDED?

        • +1

          @Leecher:

I DON'T KNOW MAN WHY DON'T YOU TRY

  • Does something like this have any pluses over something like Clonezilla?

    • +5

Yes, Clonezilla doesn't have auto partition alignment — I wouldn't recommend Clonezilla if what you're trying to achieve is migrate to an SSD.

clonezilla is meant to be fairly minimalistic whereas Paragon is more of a swiss army knife of tools.

  • Thankyou - this is exactly what I need.

My old hard drive is partitioned into 2 drives. One for windows/software, and the other for games/music/videos. Can i use this software to transfer the windows/software over to a ssd? Would my PC read the original hard drive or the ssd? cheers

    • it basically capable of cloning the data 1:1 (minus swap files / temp files etc) from HDD / SSD to new SSD

it can even clone different drives connected via USB

  • nice

  • +1

this is one of the best clone HDD to SSD software out there… highly recommended :)
just used it to migrate a 256SSD to a 480SSD this morning. :)

  • Very good software don't actually need it but great reviews

  • +1

    Very useful

  • lol i just unsubscribed to them yesterday…

anyways for those that downloaded it.. what's the deal with getting it registered as they don't provide a key?

  • Download the link in your email from BitsDuJour and in the meantime you can register here -

    http://registration.paragon-software.com/dc14compact.html

    • Thanks, did this and got a serial number. But does the key work for both 32 and 64 bit versions? I would check but I am at work!

      • well there's no option to select.. so i would say both

      • I tried with the 64 bit version and it worked. Yet to try the 32 bit version.

  • wow, guess the site is getting hammered. after 3 tries, only manage to d/l successfully.
    by the way, thanks OP.

  • Do we have to actually download the software before the 'deal' expires(around 8hrs left)? Or can I just register now and then download/install later tonight?

    • +1

Registration gets you a Product Key and Serial Number, so I would expect that you should be able to install it when you get to it.

  • Great post, used it this morning to migrate to SSD - timely..

    • good timing.

    • Can you confirm if this creates bootable media to copy outside the OS or does it copy from within the OS?

      • @adunt

Good question. I would like to know this before I download. Can anyone answer?

      • No need to create a bootable Pe, it has the capability to copy the HDD within Windows itself. This is called hot imaging.

        • Yes, everything works great when within windows with a functional computer, but when HD fails and you need to restore from a backup hopefully you will be able to transfer the paragon licence to another computer to restore.

A bootable PE would be better.

        • Bootable PE exists in this software too, it would be weird for a normally paid program to lack such an essential feature. but I'm assuming what people want this program for is to clone to an SSD.

        • @scrimshaw: Went through the process of installing the software and its not included in the download. Instructions on the web site says that WinPE can be build from a program under:

"Start > Programs > Paragon Software > Boot Media Builder"

and that its not included with all their software. Checked my install and it missing, so if you are using the software for backups, beware.

        • So that's why it is called the Compact Edition, it has left out the Boot PE component.

ToDo Backup Free edition seems to come with Boot PE. Give this a shot and see how it goes.

  • Should copying HDD to SSD using this should be same as clean install? Can people who have been using this comment about the use of softwares on the SSD after copy? Any issues?

    • +1

The best practice is to install Windows again once you have upgraded to an SSD. A clean install is one where you go through the entire Windows installation from scratch and the old installation is basically discarded. You will lose all your installed programs, Windows updates, and drivers but Windows will chuck all your personal stuff into a Windows.old directory. Why is a clean install more preferable to data migration? It just means less performance issues down the road.

This cloning to an ssd can be done to save time since you completely avoid the need to reinstall the operating system, the user installed programs and files. Everything is copied and That includes problem like corrupted files and malware by the way!

  • I like how this software comes in either 64 bits or 32 bits…

    • I'd go 32 bits, it would be a quicker puzzle to solve!

  • +2

This is not expired. There is another 24 hours to go on the count down.

  • try to download now when i get home and it keeps saying that "promo link, downloaded too many times" :(
anyone has the binaries for x64?

  • Still available.
