Dell Inspiron 13 7000

Lenovo Yoga 2 13

Ok, so this is is how they are better or worse than a 13" Macbook Air (applies to both unless otherwise indicated):

BETTER:

  • Screen quality
  • SSD and RAM are upgradable
  • Digitizer and stylus on the Dell - with that screen there is potential for real photoshop / lightroom work on the move.

WORSE:

  • Build quality
  • Battery life
  • Weight

YMMV:

  • Touchscreens
  • Windows 8.1 / Mac OS 10
  • Transform into (heavy, large) tablets

Can't find dollar sign lol. Nice laptops, shame about the formatting.

  • Too late for the extra five percent. Why didn't we ozbargainers spot this earlier sigh, the main post has crap deals. This is like our heartbleed.

    • Yeah, I even visited JB hifi today. Got home, checked email, found an extra 5% off which I couldn't use =.="

    thanks for post.

did the shop tour about a month ago, most laptops had really shitty build quality, inaccessible HDD bays etc. dells had single RAM sticks (no dual channel)

ended up getting a Macbook Air 13', and couldnt be happier after two decades of Window$, this thing just works, no fussing about, no updating virus crap every week and registry scans. omg its so nice just to use it rather than fixing crap all the time.. knock would but had no issues what so ever since buying a Mac. none. zero.

haggled some cool warranty too from JB, so its guaranteed till 2018

just thought i'd share that for those who are looking to buy.

btw. that dell for 1100$. thats crap. the only thing it has going for it is the resolution.

Mac convert here too :-) The only difference is with these laptops, at least there is a debate to be had :-)

    • Glad your happy with your purchase and new found love for Macs.

But, there are plenty of people who prefer Windows over Macs too. I've owned a macbook pro and air and many windows laptops/ultrabooks. Both of them 'just work' and I dont think I've registry scanned ever, and virus scanning/updating occurs in the background. Don't know why yours didnt. The build quality of the macbook air is indeed very nice, and the price is competitive. However, I personally prefer the windows laptops because I find I have more of a choice when it comes to softwares and games, and more choice when choosing the laptop itself. Each to their own.

And btw, extending a warranty is really a joke most of the time as physical damage/diminishing battery isnt covered and manufacturing defects won't show up after 2 years . Of course, if you have money to burn, none of this matters.

        thanks for reply.
the virus scanner doesnt update in background as my computer doesnt do anything unless explicitly asked to do something :)

it's exactly the choice of software and games that puts me off windows, essentially its programs to do something, many programs to do one simple thing, like burn a dvd for example, you have a ton of shite to sift through softwarewise just to burn a dvd. i only burn dvds in linux which i dual boot with windows for gaming, with a ati 7950 3gb video card and 27 inch screen. gaming on laptop? only if you live in the tiniest box possible.

as for warranty, not entirely correct.
this is how i ended up being stuck with JB and having to purchase something there. after 2 years of owning a Sony Vaio I got a full refund of 980$ from JB under warranty, after that exerience i dont mind spending a little bit extra, in this case 120$ for extra 3 years. I mean after 2 years the Sony was showing some ageing, not to mention i dropped it once so it had a ding in the corner, and i remvoed my SSD beforer handing it over for repair :)
so it's money well spent in my opinion, peace of mind for 4 years, sweeet :)

so basically i was as JB and looked for a while at all the laptops, all of them were shit, one dell looked ok but was 1300$ stuff that for a joke, it wasnt that good but it was the only consideration there.

oh, and if i really wanted shitty Windows on Macbook air you can use Bootcamp to install it.

Don't think choice is something to ever complain about. It provides competition and better software. And it takes a few minutes at most to google very good softwares. Not many people burn DVDs in this decade, and I don't see the benefit in dual booting for that purpose. And by games, i didn't mean hardcore gaming. Most customers I've dealt with in retail don't fit that criteria, and generally casual/light gaming on laptop for most games is acceptable. Sure you can bootcamp, and I've done it plenty of times, but it never achieves the same performance or reliability as a windows laptop. And in terms of warranty, i don't know the details but your case is not the norm. Generally, extended warranties, are never used and just provide a very nice commission to the employee.

Good luck with you mac. I was replying to your post to give balance and another opinion, so that people would not be biased towards one side. Each to their own when it comes to macs and windows.

        • @venu:
"dual booting to burn dvd's" - just about sums up your IT experience i guess.

          @millusions:
You said it, not me :P haha

'i only burn dvds in linux which i dual boot with windows for gaming'.

          stupid troll

  • 8gb of ram vs 2 hdd slots. Choices

Who buys a laptop without a real SSD these days? I'd rather have an i3 with an SSD than an i5 without. Hell maybe even a Celeron!

    • Why pay premium for manufacturers to add in an ssd? Take your celeron, much cheaper swapping a hdd compared to a whole new mb

      • 500GB 5400 rpm SATA Hybrid Hard Drive with 8GB Cache

this is a friggin joke.. in a quasi tablet convertible no less

        • Isn't that what the Crucial SSD that just shipped is for - you did order one right? :-)

Stuff that can't be upgraded like awful screens are more of a problem.

        • yup! i think so too,
          shitty 500GB hybrid
          on a 1k plus laptop?

get the fk out of here dell

    • so easy to put one in yourself. would buy a laptop without SSD anytime
