Sony HDRAS100VR for $329.65 with Sony Trade-in @ JB Hi-Fi

380

Long time lurker here, this is my first post. I hope you enjoy this deal.

JB Hi-Fi have the Sony HDRAS100VR on sale at $381.65, and Sony have a trade-in offer of $100 off for ANY action camera.

for those who doesn't have any cameras to trade-in, Kmart have $39 cameras and Target has some on sale too for the same price.

I bought the Target ones and used it for a trade-in.

JB Hi-Fi offer $381.65 + Generic Action camera $39 - Sony $100 trade-in offer = $329.65

A bit of work to do but it can save us an additional $61. Cheaper than any price I found online even from Amazon. Not to mention we are getting local warranty for it.

Edit: Just found out that the accessories from the $39 Action Cam works with the AS100V. Theres a $15 accessory coupon inside the box too! It's for use on the Official Sony Shop.

I came very close to doing this today…but sanity prevailed.

Could you get away with trading in an old webcam? They basically look like an action cam. Just write "TURBO SPORT MAGIC CAM" on it somewhere.

  • I had this Sony camera for more than a year. The quality is awesome, But the shape is very inconvenient. I always temped to put on side.

    • I have the previous generation AS30v camera, the quality of videos in this series is just awesome, personally I like the color tones produced by Sony cams more than the GoPro cams.

I love the form factor, it works great for my needs. I only use it for road biking.

      • +3

I second what AaronPOZ says, I like the slim form factor, and prefer the reduced wind or water resistance compared to the "square front on" form factor of something like a GoPro.

        • +3

Sold my gopro. Sister was using it as a helmet cam when she went snowboarding. The square form factor is one of the most dangerous devices you can put on your head.

It can get caught in a branch, and because thr mount is so strong, cause significant neck injuries. Same with a bike helmet. Hit the ground with a helmet and it'll do as it was designed to do. But have the camera on the helmet and you could end up in a bad position.

So this sony side on form factor would be so much better. Just waiting for an unbeatable deal.

  • Bought one on the weekend for 299 with the trade in .. Bought the hero 4 silver too for 399.. Don't know which one to keep.. Sony has some nice colours in the video and stabilisation.

  • what is difference between action and standard?

    • +1

Action Cameras are defined as video recording devices designed to capture moving, outdoor activities. These cameras are not designed to be carried in the hand like traditional video cameras. The design of an action camera allows for it to be mounted in order to maintain stability while moving (i.e. Helmets, cars, bikes). The user can carry out the respective activity without the necessity to hold the camera. **Sony Australia accepts no responsibility and will not be liable for any loss of media files left on trade in models.

how well does it do normal camcorder recording

        ie. not action oriented?
or just holding it in your hand to use it like a normal camcorder

also what is the max resolution…?

        • +1

This is the review I watched - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4P340RTWo2M

Sony sells an optional case to make it work like a normal handycam too - http://www.sony.com.au/product/aka-lu1

        • +3

The lens gives a distinct fisheye distortion effect. Not so noticeable when you're careening down a mountain at breakneck speed, but it will be quite distracting when shooting scenes with straight lines.

There's also no zoom, just the wide 170° field of view (120° when using the stabiliser).

Great for a point-of-view action cam, but probably not what you want for a camcorder.

        • -2

@kaladinseye: Techmoan's review, as usual, very good. One question I have is does this cam has optical zoom? Like most action cams, I am guessing no.

        • -2

@edfoo: Why is it a neg for asking a question?

        • +1

@edfoo: No zoom. The 170° field of view reduces to 120° when you enable the optical stabiliser.

        • @Thrift: Thanks.

I can't speak for someone else, but maybe somebody gave you a neg for not reading the post above yours in the reply chain you were part of (directly above yours)
          ;-)

        • @Thrift:

          thanks

looks like this only good for go pro style action shots

not so good for shooting normal camcorder style videos

Actually it is not a good deal. BH Photo & Video was selling them for $199 on Black Friday. I was sooo close to buy

    • That was without the remote.. as100v not as100vr.

    • +1

B&H with shipping and forex, works out about 5% cheaper…… hardly a good deal

    • +1

It is a good deal for Australian stock, local warranty, and the included remote. The same bundle was US$299 in the US sales, now US$318.

You can't get the camera-only option (US$198 during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales) in Australia. The remote is decent, but you get more control over the camera using the Android/iOS app.

  • +1

You can take up to $300 off, read terms and conditions *This offer is limited to three trade-ins** per customer / per transaction

    • I don't think you can do that. What they mean, you can trade up to 3 cameras and buy 3 Sony cameras for each customer in each transaction.otherwise will be great deal if they will take $300 off just for one.

      • I've read and read the conditions here
        *http://www.sony.com.au/microsite/summerofsony/?cid=HCAM.1.M|Actioncam|E:GoogleAu:Adgroup1&mkwid=sCuV3qQ0K&pcrid=55308522271&kword=hdras100vr&match=e&plid=&gclid=CLr_5f30qcICFYSXvQod9XQAUQ

They are ambiguous , I suggest you would have a strong case for 3x trade ins

  • Good Deal! I bought this a couple of months ago off ebay when they were running their promotion. Managed to snag it for $340 shipped which was the cheapest at the time. video and Audio is excellent on these things and the live view remote is great. Only down side i find is that the light that lets you know its recording is really bad in day time as you can hardly make it out.

  • +1

Does it include the waterproof case and live view remote control (http://www.sony.com.au/product/hdr-as100vr)?

    • +1

Yes, you get the waterproof case rated to 5m included. You can also buy a case rated to 60m.

You also get the remote. Aussie stock only has the remote bundle, the "R" in AS100VR. In the US you can buy the camera without the remote for ~$100 less.

      • Make that 3m according to butasan's link: "**Supplied housing Waterproof down to 3meters (15feet)"

        • +2

The camera comes included with the SPK-AS2 waterproof case. Description and specs from the Aus site ( http://www.sony.com.au/product/spk-as2 ):

          Features: Waterproof (till 5m)
Specifications / Usable Depth: Approx. Up to 16ft/5m under the water surface

The US product description for AS100V states 5m in the included case:

Slip on the waterproof case for activities down to 16' (5 m).

The remote is waterproof to 3 metres, but don't expect it to work underwater.

Can the Live-View Remote be used underwater?
Although the remote control is designed to be waterproof, the Wi-Fi® signals cannot travel underwater. Therefore, it cannot be used underwater to control a camera.

    • it comes with a 5m rated ones, 60m rated one is extra and you have to pay.
for diving i think gopro is more decent.

      • According to the reviews I have seen, this camera performs better in low light conditions. Haven't tested it yet but so far I'm impressed with the built-in features it comes with.

  • Its only splash proof

    • The camera itself (ie, not in a case) is splash resistant. No worries if it gets wet from rain or spray.

If you put it in the included waterproof case (SPK-AS2), you can take it underwater to 5m.

If you want to take it deeper, you can buy the MPK-AS3 case, rated to 60m (prices around US$38 in the US, and A$60 local.

Traded in my Target Base action cam I got for $5 on clearance. $15 Sony accessory voucher in the box as well. I can also confirm it is only one trade in per camera bought, said so on JB's staff instructions. Now to jump off of something…

    • +1

Jaycar have a 640x480 "action camera" for $29.95 (Signet Micro Action Camera, $26.90 with club/trade discount).

JB were happy with take that as the trade-in (keep the USB lead and head-strap to sweeten the bargain :).

An AS100V with remote for A$308.55 with local warranty is a pretty sweet deal.

  • +2

Another suggestion is you can buy a used action camera. eg. Cash Converters, Gumtree, eBay…

Can pick up the 2nd hand camera on the same day you visit JB.

This is why I love Ozbargain. Smart ideas/tips and/or loopholes that can turn a bargain into an ozbargain!

I saw the JB deal two days ago and it didn't even cross my mind - I think my mind was wondering why JB/Sony would want a second-hand action camera, working… OR NOT?! What can they do with a busted up action camera?!

    • they might crush em in a compacter or use it in an advert :P
who knows . id be interested to find out though!

  • Anyone tried to use the voucher from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172954 to buy sony action cam

    • Yes it works. Managed to get the cam + head mount for $300.65
If you have a change for TRS claim, it is very sweet deal

  • Great price!
