paying rediculous for tiny bit of screen going over the edge on one side

Why not buy a LGG3 for half the price with basically the same specs

It doesn't even have a screen running down the side. How 2012.

        QHD + S801 :(
        QHD + S805 :)

        Not same specs

        Do you even Edge !

    • You want to compare LG phones to this in terms of spec, I think you'd need to bring G3 Cat.6 which uses same SoC as this one.

I got one on a Contract… Certainly worth it in my opinion.

I finally have a phone no one else has!!

That's why I still have a Philips fizz

    • "I finally have a phone no one else has!!"

There's a reason for this and it isn't cause it's hard to get or cost's too much.

  • That extra screen on the edge is so tiny, i would rather buy surface pro 3

To each their own - I was in the market for a new phone and was debating the Note 4 or the Note Edge.

Popped into one of the Samsung Experience stores so I could have a play with the Edge and wasn't quite sure if it was a gimmick I'd tire of or if it would be useful.

Ended up buying the edge and really happy with it - took some adjusting and the bit that I found most difficult/awkward was the power button placement on top of the phone (which required you to readjust your grip to turn it off) - but there's a 'Screen off and Lock' app that let me put a shortcut on the Edge screen so problem solved.

Only downside is that given it's a little out there it probably won't see the development focus of a 'standard' Android phone because the market / ROI would be significantly smaller.

Again, to each their own - but I love it and it suits me.
This looks like a good price for an outright purchase too - but if you're considering it - play with one first to be sure it's for you.

Hi mate, iv found the side screen much more usable since I enabled the developer options under settings, then disable all window animation except for animation duration scale set to 0.5.

Behaves so much better, especially for watching stocks..

    • I doubt the development will be the issue you think it might be in all honesty although you might "miss out" on some edge specific features if that's an issue.

My take on this phone, without having used it admittedly, is just … why? Like a lot of Samsung's phone features it seems more like they're just trying stuff out without really designing it. Which isn't an issue for me - until it is with this device. I just see no compelling reason to prefer this over a Note 4.

If you run into someone who owns the Edge it'll take them two minutes to convince you that the Edge screen is beneficial and not a gimmick… Even if they rub it seductively when the screen is off. I love doing that when I'm alone with my phone. Mmm so sexy.

      • Does there have to be a compelling reason?

Essentially the same specs as a note 4 with a little something extra that comes down to taste / preference.

Variety is nice - instead of a (mostly) one size fits all solution ala Apple.

(Yes, I know Apple have a larger size now in the 6plus - and as an aside for a bit of a chuckle, anyone remember their thumb ad? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY4c2mh15Yk So much for 'common sense…')

        • Well in all honesty for me with this particular device yes. What do you actually use it for? The "customised buttons on the side" use case isn't appealing to me … I see people talking about stock tickers and such things but how is having that in the side really anymore useful? ;)

        • @Diji1:

And that's totally fine if you're looking for another reason - like I said, each to their own.

For me, it's super quick access to a list of apps, quick dial for contacts, data usage widget, S-Pen functionality/menus, great placement for camera settings/button so the main screen isn't obscured with an overlay, weather, fitness tracking and agenda. Notifications pop on the edge screen rather than the top of the main screen - which leaves the main screen free if I'm in full screen for something.

That's all at the flick of a thumb - especially useful on a quite a large device.

I find it is far more efficient than going into the app drawer and launching what I want there, or unlocking the phone/turning on the main screen to look at widgets for information. It streamlines access to the things I want. That's what I personally like about it. (I don't use the stock ticker)

Is it compelling enough? For me, sure. I like that it's different too in all honesty.
For you, perhaps not - and that's absolutely fine.
Neither of us really need to justify personal preference to the other. ;)

the bit that I found most difficult/awkward was the power button placement on top of the phone (which required you to readjust your grip to turn it off)

I have just swapped over from various iPhones to a Samsung Note 3, and I absolutely HATE the Power Button on the side. I pick it up to use it, or to answer a phone call and wham… it's "switched off". GRRRR

Why on earth would anybody want "easy access" to the power button? There is no need to switch a phone off, they all go to sleep automatically.

I used iPhones for the past 5 years and never used the power button on the top, unless I needed to reboot or completely power off for a flight or whatever. Until a few months ago I didn't even know it could be used to sleep and wake the phone!

There is no need to ever touch the power button on the Note either.

      • I'm a little OCD - if I'm not using it, I want that screen off.

It's a habit and a quirk I suppose, but again - to each their own.

      • "There is no need to ever touch the power button on the Note either."

How do you turn your phone on? :D

        • I imagine the 'home' button at the bottom as that activates the screen - obviously hard power on/off would be the power button though.

  • I have this phone having switched from an iphone 5 and absolutely love it. The edge screen is not a gimmick. I find it very useful. I have already convinced 2 people who were also iphone users to switch and they slso love it. Everybody that sees my phones thinks its very innovative and love the edge screen. I should be getting royalties from samsung for all the people who have switched or are going to switch to this phone because of my great selling skills lol. Btw i am a sales person by trade so i guess that helps. Great deal though for the phone. I would recommend getting the original flip case. Turns the phone off/on by opening the flip case. Also the case allows you to remove the original back cover as the case has a back cover which clips into place.no added bulk.

  • Love the idea…but not the price…not value for money (yet). Its still 'just' a smartphone with an Android OS.
